Is this organic search sketchiness worth unwinding?
-
Started working on a site and learned that the person before me had done a fairly sketchy maneuver and am wondering if it's a net gain to fix it.
The site has pages that it wanted to get third party links linking to. Thing is, the pages are not easy to naturally link to boost them in search.
So, the woman before me started a new blog site in the same general topic area as the first/main site. The idea was to build up even the smallest bit of authority for the new blog, without tipping Google off to shared ownership. So, the new blog has a different owner/address/registrar/host and no Google Analytics or Webmaster Tools account to share access to.
Then, as one method of adding links to the new blog, she took some links that originally pointed to the main site and re-directed them to the blog site.
And voila! ...Totally controllable blog site with a bit of authority linking to select pages on the main site!
At this point, I could un-redirect those links that give the blog site some of its authority. I could delete the links to the main site on the blog pages.
However, on some level it may have actually helped the pages linked to on the main site.
The whole thing is so sketchy I wonder if I should reverse it.
I could also just leave it alone and not risk hurting the pages that the blog currently links to.
What do you think? Is there a serious risk to the main site in this existing set up? The main site has hundreds of other links pointing to it, a Moz domain authority of 43, thousands of pages of content, 8 years old and Open Site Explorer Spam Score of 1. So, not a trainwreck of sketchiness besides this issue.
To me, the weird connection for Google is that third party sites have links that (on-page-code-wise) still point to the main site, but that resolve via the main site's redirects to the blog site. BTW, the blog site points to other established sites besides the main site. So, it's not the exclusive slave to the main site.
Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

I agree with the two methods that both you and Gaston have pointed out.
The downside to reversing those links is that the domain authority could drop a bit—which could impact their rankings on the SERPs. If this happens, the client might think you are doing something wrong and causing their rankings to rank when, in theory, you were trying to help get rid of any sketchy links. In my opinion, I’d keep them. They’ll make your work perform better. Disavowing them could yield worse results than what their former SEO provided. If that happens, you're playing defense and blaming.
Hope this helps!

Well, I like Gaston's answers on these boards and at the same time was curious if that seemed like the concensus.... leave it cause no real risk.

Hi 94501! Did Gaston answer you question, and if so, would you mind marking his response a "Good Answer?"
Otherwise, how else can we help?

Thanks, Gaston!
Any other insights, folks?
Mike

Hi there,
There are 2 exits here, and you've pointed them:
- Reverse those links
- Leave all as it is now.
On one hand, if you aren't confortable with those links, just reverse all.
On the other hand, you've said that the main site has a lot of links and it those 'unnatural links' will not make harm and that the satellite blog has really few conections to the latter. I'd say that there isnt, almost nothing, risk. So, i'd leave as it is now.
Hope it helps.
GR.

Site dropped in search for 95% after 18-19 feb
Hi people. I have a client which holds a escort agency website operating in Amsterdam the Netherlands. Please take note that Escort Agency is legal and holland is a liberal country with permit and all, so just trying to point out that it's a perfectly legal crafted business. To the point: we are seeing a 95% drop in traffic (basicly back to barely 10 clicks a day) after 18 to 19 feb. We've inspected the incoming links, and we did see some things going on that where not quite healthy. At first a banner was bought on a dutch advertising website. On their behalf, this sitewide banner got published with a follow on roughly 132k of pages. That was strike 1 (i think). After tossing this in disavow for temporarily basis and informed the advertisal website to put any sitewide link to nofollow in the first place, nothing changed. We found a 2nd site doing the same mistake. Frankly the banner got exposed on roughly 100k of pages on which some of 'm where barely 2 days old. Strike 2. Solved this by putting it in disavow for the time being and asking politely to put the banner again, nofollow. We cleaned out any incoming potential spammy links by using disavow. The data we obtained was a mix of google webmaster itself and moz profiling. However we're one month further now, and the graph is still a big phat flatline. What is going on? I've noted that, one other sites, which share the same brand, but completely different websites / subnets / content and all, has the same threatment going on showing a huge drop from 18th of feb 2019 and is unable to recover. We cannot see anything 'bad' actually going on @ webmasters and there is no manual action taken. So we're kind of stuck now on a site that was my project but now completely fell into oblivion and hurting someone's business. The url is https://www.qualityescort.nl/ - anyone has a reasonable advice to this issue? full.jpg full.jpg

However when I look at the Sitemap report in GSC it shows 9,000 pages indexed. Also, when I perform a site: search on Google I get 24,000 results. Can anyone help me to explain these anomalies?

How does linkedin get grey microdata when searching a persons name?
If you google any persons name who has a linkedin profile and then locate that entry in the search engine results (linkedin profiles are usually first page for most people) you will see that they get microdata indexed which is basically the persons location and headline from their profile. Looking at their markup, i see location which makes sense as it is an hcard format, but I do not see any microformat data around the headline. Any ideas how they get this? wDQcGZY

Canonical URL on search result pages
Hi there, Our company sells educational videos to Nurses via subscription. I've been looking at their video search results page:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | 9868john
http://www.nursesfornurses.com.au/cpd When you click on a category, the URL appears like this:
http://www.nursesfornurses.com.au/cpd?view=category&cat=9&name=Acute+Surgical+Nursing
http://www.nursesfornurses.com.au/cpd?view=category&cat=6&name=Medications Would this be an instance where i'd use the canonical tag to redirect each search results page? Bearing in mind the /cpd page is under /Nursing cpd, and that /Nursing cpd is our best performing page in search engines, would it be better to refer it to the 'Nursing CPD' rather than 'CPD' page? Any advice is very welcome,
Thanks,

Do search engines crawl links on 404 pages?
I'm currently in the process of redesigning my site's 404 page. I know there's all sorts of best practices from UX standpoint but what about search engines? Since these pages are roadblocks in the crawl process, I was wondering if there's a way to help the search engine continue its crawl. Does putting links to "recent posts" or something along those lines allow the bot to continue on its way or does the crawl stop at that point because the 404 HTTP status code is thrown in the header response?

Google cached pages and search terms
Here's something I noticed. We have a rank A page and it's ranking 10 on Google search results. When I hover my mouse over our search result, Google gives us a preview, but Google also highlights in red where the search keyword is present on the page. Reviewing our page, even though we have it as the h1 header and intro paragraph, Google is highlighting it half way down the page. Any ideas why? I review rank 1 - 5 and Google highlights the keyword on the intro paragraph and h1 header Have you guys experienced anything like this? It makes me think..Google could be crawling my site and thinking I haven't got it in the h1 or intro paragraph etc.. Thoughts?

Duplicate title tags in a pagination case (not search results)
Hello fellows I working on a site that have duplicate pages' titles tags, the case is the following: there is a category page that is split in couple pages via pagination (1,2,3 ....) all these pages have the same title tag for example: looking at this page for example, it has a pagination at the bottom, all the pages in the pagination (let's say page 5 for example) have the same title tag for the rest (including the first page). How should I deal with this case? should I simply add to the title tag its corresponding page number? e.g, full interviews - page 1? or I should I use canonical tag? I'm really confused. Your help is really appreciated.
