How can I use AMP html on a CMS
-
I have been trying to research using AMP to improve our mobile speed. We have a whole lot of sites on the same platform managed by a CMS. From what I have read, AMP html can only be used on static pages. Does that mean we would not be able to incorporate this into the html through our CMS?
I would like to implement this across all our homepages to test the effectiveness of it if possible, but there is no way to rebuild all our homepages statically.
Any advice is much appreciated!

I think the community needs to look at the AMP project roadmap and recognize that AMP HTML isn't only for blogs and news sites. Google is very active in promoting AMP standards, and now it's possible to create a full e-commerce website using 100% AMP HTML. And because analytics tells us 86% of visitors find us on a mobile device, we've committed to building out a 100% AMP site. I'll post back after the launch and report on our results.

Hi Chris,
Like Andy said, AMP isn't intended to improve the overall site speed of your website. AMP articles and web pages load 15 – 85 percent faster on mobile devices. The idea behind this is to create a faster user experience for mobile users, 40 percent of whom have the tendency to abandon a web page if it takes longer than roughly 3 seconds to load. For more info on Accelerated Amp Pages, check out our blog.
However, I do recommend using AMP pages if you post blog posts or articles to your website. Why? Well, Google incorporated mobile-friendliness into their search rankings algorithm last year, so we know webpages that are mobile friendly do receive a boost in rankings. However, AMP is not a ranking factor—yet. Since AMPs are featured in a carousel (most of the time) above the fold, it does push down organic search results on mobile. If you use WordPress as your CMS there are plugins you can download that make creating AMP pages as simple as the click of a button.
But if you are simply looking to improve the overall site speed of your website, Andy is correct. Run your website through the Google PageSpeed Insights tester and following it's recommendations for both desktop AND mobile site speed.
Hope this helps!

Hi Chris,
AMP isn't intended for this use. It is only for the likes of blog posts and news articles.
If you want to speed your internal pages up, then you will need to run your site through the Google Page Speed Insights and follow those recommendations.

How do I canonicalize an old HTML static site?
Hey All, I have an old static HTML site, and the crawl errors are showing "http://www.website.com" and http://website.com" as the two separate pages because there is no canonicalization. Can I fix that with a rel="canonical" tag? There is just a folder of HTML files to add the tag to, so if the www. version is the true version, can I just add to all the pages? Or is there a better way to do this??

Will using CDN Affect SEO?
I'm got a website with a slider and each of the 6 slides has a 5-second video background. The website is B2B and the user profile for the website is employees at Fortune 1000 companies in the United States using desktop computers to browse. The videos are highly optimized and we did testing using various browsers and bandwidth connections to determine the videos loaded fast enough on down to a 15mbit/s connection (which is pretty low by today's average U.S. business bandwidths.) We tried hosting the videos on Vimeo and YouTube but it caused issues in the timing of the slide show display. (I've not seen any other website do what we do the way we do it. Most sites have a single video background with a single text overlay on top.) The downside to this is that loading all those videos produces a lot of bandwidth usage for our server. The website is serving a niche service industry though so we're not exceeding our current limits. I'm wondering though might there be some benefit to hosting just the video files on a CDN? Obviously that would mean lest bandwidth usage for our server, and possibly quicker load times where the CDN server is closer to the user than our server. But are there benefits or downsides from an SEO perspective noting that I'm proposing only putting the videos on the CDN, not the entire web page.

Keyword Cannabalisation & Ecommerce
Hi I have an Ecommerce site, with a lot of similar products - for example leather office chairs - 80 products all very similar.. We worked to optimise product pages for longer tail phrases such as black executive leather office chair, but we now have different product pages trying to rank for these longer tail phrases as well. Now I'm trying to decide whether to focus on some priority product pages - adding lots of useful content/videos etc to try & boost the ones we want to rank for the long tail. OR whether to focus on the category page, and getting this to rank for all keyword variations... I'm a it stuck - any advice is welcome!

Use hreflang on links without rel alternative?
Does it do any good to use hreflang on links without rel="alternative" ? We have on each page a possibility to go to another language, but the languages root page and not an alternative version of that specific article.

Organic Google Sitelinks - can I edit?
A client just contacted me saying a competitor is threatening legal action threatened against a page description in a Google sitelink (just double checked and its in the serps results too). I checked the site and the content doesn't appear on that page or anywhere else on the site. I also added a Meta description to that page to see if that will have an effect. The page is the home page and I don't really want to demote it. Is there anything else I can/should do?

Can i get banned for my content?
Last night all our indexed pages are gone from google. Completely deindexed - banned. Links could not cause it, all of them are related, anchors diversified and spam is never used. Content is the same like our other website has, just some small changes. First stronger website is working as usual. So can it be that duplicate content caused a complete ban? (Website is 6 months old. Content has never been properly indexed, due to same reasons i think. Last week we made changes, ant it started to get indexed quite well until tonight..)
