Redirect Issue in .htaccess
-
Hi, I'm stumped on this, so I'm hoping someone can help. I have a Wordpress site that I migrated to https about a year ago. Shortly after I added some code to my .htaccess file. My intention was to force https and www to all pages. I did see a moderate decline in rankings around the same time, so I feel the code may be wrong. Also, when I run the domain through Open Site Explorer all of the internal links are showing 301 redirects. The code I'm using is below. Thank you in advance for your help!
Redirect HTTP to HTTPS
RewriteEngine On
ensure www.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. [NC]
RewriteRule ^ https://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]ensure https
RewriteCond %{HTTP:X-Forwarded-Proto} !https
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]BEGIN WordPress
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule>END WordPress

The issue of the internal links of your site going through 301-redirects isn't being caused by the htaccess file, John - in fact that file is partially saving you from the bigger issue.
The problem is that your WordPress migration to HTTPS was incomplete.
After the migration, you missed the step of going through the WP database and changing all the static URLs to the HTTPS versions as well. This can be done using a mySQL query through phpMyAdmin, but the easiest way is to use the Better Search Replace plugin. (You need to be sure you're correctly handling serialised data, which the plugin does automatically.)
In addition, you're going to want to insure that you've updated the WordPress Address URL and the Site URL in Settings > General to the HTTPS versions of the URLs.
The final check will then be to make certain all the static assets loaded by the site (and any referenced from 3rd parties) are also being loaded over HTTPS as well. Watch especially for 3rd party form codes like newsletter subscription forms, social media widgets, and other widgets in sidebars as these aren't caught by the rewrite plugin I mentioned earlier. This step is essential to insure you don't have "mixed content" on the pages which cause you to get a non-secure warning from the browser.
You may have used a "Switch to HTTPS" plugin for this process initially, but the majority of those don't accomplish their task in the most SEO-effective way. Using the method outlines above will both make the search engines happier, and will make for faster webpage performance as well.
Let me know if you have further questions.

Redirect Chains
Hi There, I have had conducted a few migrations recently and have a common issue which is this: HTTP (old site) -> HTTPS (old site) -> (HTTPS) (new site) Which causes a redirect chain. How should you prevent this before migration or fix it after migration? Cheers.

Ive got a current domain and after a bit of a rebrand Im considering 301 rediecting the current site to a newly purchased domain. Id redirect each age to idential pages. Am I likely to see any issues. I know this is the recomended way from Google but just wondering how smoothly it works and whether Im likely to see any ranking drops or other problems?

Clarification around 301 redirects.
I’ve come across numerous blogs recently that suggest that SEOs should NOT do bulk re-directs to a category page. This has come as something of a surprise (doh!!) and I feel like I should already know this. It does seem like there is lots disagreement here so I thought that I’d ask what people’s opinions were to make sure that I get my thinking straight. I've read all the main Moz blog posts on this topic and, although really useful, they've left me none the wiser around a few specific questions. Here’s some more detail about the situation. We’re currently consolidating a lot of content into a main blog, which will be the focal point of new blogs posts that are created. This is different to the past, where we tended to create separate blogs for different products on separate domains. I’m currently considering how we move content across from one the older blogs to this new blog (which will soon sit on a subfolder of our main domain). I have three (!) questions: 1) Could you confirm that doing bulk re-directs a category page is bad? I already know that doing them all to the homepage is an error. 2) Should I re-direct the home page of the old blog on a separate domain to the relevant category page on the new site? The category page is related, but does not cover the EXACT topic. The category page covers our replacement product offering. It I shouldn't do this, where should I re-direct the old blog domain to? 3) I’ve recommended that we set up 301 redirects on a one-to-one basis, redirecting each piece of content to its new location on the old site. What about content that has been earmarked for removal and for which there is no obvious alternative? My previous recommendation has been to re-direct these pages to the most relevant category page on the new blog. Would it be better to let this 404 or, as an alternative, create a custom 404 for the users on the new blog highlighting the new content that we offer? Any help would be appreciated 🙂

Worth it to redirect .swf during a website migration?
Recently one of our clients switched web providers. We've been implementing 301 redirects to the new URL structure for the most important pages. We noticed upon doing a site search, Google has indexed a .swf URL on page 3 of search results. Please see attached image. 1. Should I implement a redirect for this? There are no links to this filetype.

2. There are three others (.swf) that are indexed I would think the best thing to do is to have the new website return a 404 for this page, as it's currently doing, and it will eventually drop out of the index. Any other suggestions? Thanks! g2tur4r0 -
This is a clear-cut canonical issue, right?
Hello, A client is having one of their daily blogs published on a industry news site along with on their own site. This is a clear-cut case of having a canonical tag implemented on the client's site on each blog page, right? Thanks

Link Reclimation & Redirects
Hello, I'm in the middle of a link reclamation project wherein we're identifying broken links, links pointing to dupe content etc. I found a forgotten co-brand which is effectively dupe content across 8 sub-domains, some of which have a significant number of links (200+ linking domains | 2k+ in-bound links). Question for the group is what's the optimal redirect option? Option 1: set 301 and maintain 1:1 URL mapping will pass all equity to applicable PLPs and theoretically improve rank for related keyword(s). requires a bit more configuration time and will likely have small effect on rank given links are widely distributed across URLs. Option 2: set 301 to redirect all requests to the associated sub-domain e.g. foo.mybrand.cobrand.com/page1.html and foo.mybrand.cobrand.com/page2 both redirect to foo.mybrand.com/ will accumulate all equity at the sub-domain level which theoretically will be roughly distributed throughout underlying pages and will limit risk of penalty to that sub-domain. Option 3: set 301 to redirect all requests to our homepage. easiest to configure & maintain, will accumulate the maximum equity on a priority page which should positively affect domain authority. run risk of being penalized for accumulating links en mass, risk penalty for spammy links on our primary sub-domain www, won't pass keyword specific equity to applicable pages. To be clear, I've done an initial scrub of anchor text and there were no signs of spam. I'm leaning towards #3, but interested in others perspectives. Cheers,

301 redirect
Hi there, I have some good links pointing to one of my web pages at the moment, however we are just about to launch a new design with new URL structure and I am clear that I need to do a 301 redirect on the URL to the new URL. However, do I keep the old URL live forever? or can I remove it after a while? Kind Regards

Multiple retail sites redirected to one
Recently our company has acquired several high ranking retail websites which sell only our brand of products. We are now considering consolidating all our online sales from these different retail sites to be direct to our main website. The question we have is how do we do this without negatively affecting SEO for these high ranking retail sites?
