Two long established sites with similar audiences, what do we do?
-
Hi guys,
We operate two long established and reasonably well ranking sites — our company website which was built on a keyword domain: market-stalls.co.uk (approx 15 years online) and our online store which was established several years later on a different domain: tradersupplies.co.uk (approx 9 years online).
(At the bottom of this post I've attached real world traffic and turnover figures that demonstrate the issue we're facing)
The problem is...
- The above sites target very similar audiences and keywords and both rank fairly well but I know are likely competing against eachother
- We're a small company (8-10 employees) and we (or rather, I) don't have the time or resources to blog, build back links, manage opseo and all the social channels etc for both sites. I'm struggling to cope with one.
The question is...
- Do we abandon the original company site (market-stalls.co.uk) in favour of pooling all our resource in to improving rankings for our online store (tradersupplies.co.uk). All our social media presence relates to tradersupplies.co.uk. We don't have any social channels for market-stalls.co.uk. Ironically, the only blog we have is established on market-stalls.co.uk — set up a couple of years ago in the hope to pull ourselves back up the rankings — but it hasn't been updated in over a year due to time restraints.
- Or do we attempt to keep both sites operational, despite a lack of resource? That would likely include a fairly sizeable overhaul of market-stalls.co.uk to bring it up to date with modern design standards, establishing social media channels for market-stalls.co.uk, creating a blog on tradersupplies.co.uk, and regularly updating two blogs and two sets of social media channels with unique content. Sounds like a pretty huge job right!?
Obviously, had we been setting up our business in 2017 and having read the many community posts on the subject of multiple websites, we wouldn't be splitting our time between two websites and would be focussing solely on building one highly ranking site.
But unfortunately we're not in this position and we're in a quandary because we don't know whether or not we should let our original, highly ranking company site drop off the radar in favour of focussing on building traffic to our online store.
This situation arose out of a decision to establish our online store on a different domain to our company website.
- Back in 2007 I rebuilt market-stalls.co.uk and spent a lot of time optimising it. The site blew up and we were ranking very well for all kinds of keywords related to market stalls
- In 2009 we opened our online store tradersupplies.co.uk which sells all of the products advertised on market-stalls.co.uk and then some
- By using "buy now" buttons on market-stalls.co.uk which redirected to tradersupplies.co.uk, our original site was driving a large amount of traffic and sales to tradersupplies.co.uk. At it's peak it was driving almost £6,000 GBP a month in sales. This has since dropped to around a third/quarter of this total.
- As the business grew we began to run short of time to maintain market-stalls.co.uk and it has inevitably slipped down the rankings
- This has also had a direct impact on the referral traffic and resulting sales on tradersupplies.co.uk. I've attached below the analytics which show the drop in referral traffic to tradersupplies.co.uk and the drop off in sales.
I have a feeling I know the answer to this debacle but I'm keen to hear the opinions of those that may have found themselves in this position before!
UPDATE: I've just had a call with our Magento developer halfway through writing this post ... he has suggested we transfer all content from market-stalls.co.uk over to CMS pages on our Magento powered online store, and create 301 redirects. Apparently this will carry the weight of market-stalls.co.uk over to tradersupplies.co.uk. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Guys, thank you so much for this. A really reassuring and extremely useful answer. Fortunately, having hard coded market-stalls.co.uk from the ground up I know the site structure isn't very complex and there are unlikely to be any URLs I'm not aware of so it shouldn't take too long to map over. I'll check Google's index though. Thanks for the recommendation about Open Site Explorer too.

I would definitely get rid of market-stalls and redirect everything. First I'd map out all of the URLs from that site (both from your own sitemap and from Google's index, in case it has any weird URLs you're not even aware of). Then I'd map out appropriate redirects page by page and have a developer set up redirects for everything. Depending on how it's all set up, it might just be a few lines of code or it might be a drastic page-by-page redirect file. 301 redirects, when done properly, carry over most of the rankings with them. I think the loss in rankings will be recouped by having only 1 site to focus all your efforts on, especially since the other site is the one that's been plugged on social media.

How do I track a primary domain and a subdomain as single site in Google Analytics?
Our website consists of a primary domain (marketing focused) and subdomain (ecommerce platform). The two sites look and function as one site even though they are using different technology. I would like to track the primary domain (example.com) and the subdomain (shop.example.com) as a single site in Google Analytics. The subdomain will be set up with GA ecommerce tracking as well. Can someone provide an example of the GA snippet that each would need?

How is this site being tracked in GA?
Hi, Bit of an unusual one this, so please bear with me. This site http://www.hayesandhurst.com/ is being tracked in Google Analytics but we're unsure as to how. To the best of our knowledge we haven't inserted the tracking ID into the theme options or the tracking code into the source - and yet it appears to be tracking successfully! I did send some instructions to the client to set up the Analytics account in their name - I fear they have added the code somewhere to the site, but we cannot see where! Perhaps via Google tag Manager?? As I say, an odd one this, but if anyone can shed any light on this mystery i'd be hugely grateful. The tracking ID is UA-64505394-1 for the record. Regards,

Google Analytics Set-Up for site with both http & https pages
We have a client that migrated to https last September. The site uses canonicals pointing to the https version. The client IT team is reluctant to put 301 redirects from the non-secure to the secure and we are not sure why they object. We ran a screaming frog report and it is showing both URLs for the same page (http and https). The non-secure version has a canonical pointing to the secure version. For every secure page there is a non-secure version in ScreamingFrog so Google must be ignoring the canonical and still indexing the page however, when we run a site: we see that most URLs are the secure version. At that time we did not change the Google Analytics setup option to use: "https" instead of "http" BUT GA appears to be recording data correctly. Yesterday we set up a new profile and selected "https" but our question is: Does the GAnalytics http/https version make a difference if so, what difference is it?

How can I redirect incoming links from an old version of my site ending in .ctlg and .ivnu?
My original site was published in 2001 using "version 2" software from Ivenue, the hosting company that I signed up with at that time. The site's structure was built in such a way that the primary category pages ended in the extension .ivnu. Product or item pages on the shopping cart side ended in the extension .ctlg. My site's name was and is [Lamplight Feather, Inc.](<a class="webkit-html-attribute-value webkit-html-external-link" href="http://www.tonyhill.net/" target="_blank">http://www.tonyhill.net/</a>). We built our business between 2001 and 2011 and by the last three years (2009 - 2011) of using their version two were averaging a million dollars per year in gross sales. We decided to "upgrade" to Ivenue's "version 3" in 2011 to take advantage of some more modern options and because their newer software created web pages ending in .html which we thought more desirable. We made the switch in late 2011. But it was a disaster. Traffic and sales dropped precipitously. For the past two years (2012-2013) our annual gross sales average dropped to $400,000. (Two other factors were involved beside losing the many incoming links and link juice we had built up over the years: Panda came in that fall and my little niche market (decorative feathers) was flooded with competitors.) However as I try to rebuild our traffic and business little by little, I am stumped as to how to redirect the many incoming links that went to our first site's .ivnu and .ctlg pages. I have constructed redirects for some of our current but changed .html pages like this and put them in the file cabinet and they work: For (example): http://www.tonyhill.net/feathers_c384589.html then But trying the same thing for (example) http://www.tonyhill.net/craftfeathers.ivnu still returns a 404. Is there something I am missing. Ivenue is useless in this matter by the way. Their "technicians" are no help. I plan to be migrating my site once again to a new hosting company and hope to solve this problem before then. Thanks for the attention, Tony Hill This is an example from Google Webmaster of the type of links that show up as 404's that I would like to redirect: | URL: | http://www.tonyhill.net/productCat96521.ctlg | | | Error details | Linked from | | <colgroup><col></colgroup>

Mobile Site on Google Analytics
Hi mozzers, We just launched a mobile site and I was wondering what are the main steps to follow for gettting your mobile site tracked via GA (m.example.com)? We have a profile for www.example.com GATC: javascript or PHP to install? Should the profile be on a subdomain? What else to consider when implementing a mobile site on GA? Thanks

When one of my sites returns a ranking that consistently reads "No Data", what does that say about the site?
I am getting "No Data" reads for some of my sites - I personally think it has to do with the site's construction - especially the landing page... I inherited this site to do SEO - it was not created with on site SEO in mind - please help if you can sites are: www.storagesanangelo.com www.storagemidland.com Should I get webmaster to remove the big map graphic and add text and pics instead... Sure appreciate brilliant thoughts - even about yetis and beer

Setting Up Google Analytic with Sub Folder Sites
What is the best way of setting up Google Analytic for a website that has many sub folders? The main site is example.com and it has 40 sub folder sites like example.com/uk example.com/France etc etc Would it be advised to track a single domain in Google Analytic then create filters for the sub folder sites. Filters > Include traffic from > Sub directories Also with this method is it possible to view overall incoming website stats for everything? Previous experience would be great with this thanks 🙂

Site: Query Question
Hi All, Question around the site: query you can execute on Google for example. Now I know it has lots of inaccuracies, but I like to keep a high level sight of it over time. I was using it to also try and get a high level view of how many product pages were indexed vs. the total number of pages. What is interesting is when I do a site: query for say www.newark.com I get ~748,000 results returned. When I do a query for www.newark.com "/dp/" I get ~845,000 results returned. Either I am doing something stupid or these numbers are completely backwards? Any thoughts? Thanks, Ben
