Wrong sitelinks (from the old homepage on the domain)
-
Hi there, I am quite a novice when it comes to SEO. So you'll have to forgive me if the questions has already been asked by someone before me. The question is about site links in google.
Google does generate som sitelinks, but some of the are seemingly generated on the basis of the old homepage. All the sitelinks corresponds to menu items, but two of those items exist only in the homepage on the domain.
The fact that the SERP entry is not exactly as we wanted it to be is not strange at alle. We have yet to write in a propper metadescription, and optimize for the right keywords. Because that, I gather from my research, has a great role to play for googles decisions about which lins to use as sitelinks.
But I do not understand why google decides to use link names on a page that is no longer there as sitelinks on a new page without those link names.
I would like to understand this before experimenting with keywords and metadescriptions.
I will appreciate an explanation as well as any advice on the relation been keywords and metadescritions.
Happy day, Plovsky
First, some context:
1. We just changed the homepage on our domain, pointen the domain name to the IP the new webhost and the new website.

Thank you Paul! I guess it patience is what is needed. But also, I would like to be prepared and help google to decide on which menu-items to display as sitelinks.
As I understand it, the reason for the confusion between the site-links from the old and the new site on the domain is that google does not see the new site as a completely new site. It just see change. It has kept some of the old information and registered some of the new. So I guess the follow up question is this. Is it right that the search engine robots are quick to register new content (say posts and pages) and slower to register changes in the architecture of a site?

If you've just changed the website to a new one, you're going to have to wait for Google to fully crawl and index the new version before you can expect any change in the sitelinks, Plovsky. This can take anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks, depending on the authority of the site.
Hope that helps?
Paul

Old forum with 404s, what should I do?
Hello, So I'm helping out some friends with their SEO. I've just run a Screaming Frog crawl of their entire site (which took hours and hours I might add). They used to have a forum connected to the site, which is no longer active. Google is still indexing all of the old URLs, which unsurprisingly return 404 errors. What should they do to prevent Google from indexing these pages? That's assuming they need to do anything at all. They don't have access to these old forum posts and therefore won't be able to fix the URL or resource adding a 301 redirect pointing to the most relevant alternate page. I'm new to SEO but my instinct is that they need to have the page return a 410 ‘Gone’ response code to give search engines a clear signal that the page no longer exists and won’t be returning, and removing the internal links to that URL or resource. 1. Is this interpretation correct?

Redirect typo domains
Hi, What's the "correct" way of redirecting typo domains? DNS A record goes to the same ip address as the correct domain name Then 301 redirects for each typo domain in the .htaccess Subdomains on typo urls still redirect to www or should they redirect to the subdomain on the correct url in case the subdomain exists?

Domain Structure - without www.
I'm working on a new project and we would prefer to not use the www. - for name/branding reasons. Are there any SEO ramifications from setting the domain without the www and using 301 redirects for all home page extensions to forward to -> domain.com(without the www)? Furthermore, we will be hosting many profiles on this site and would like to structure them for optimal SEO. Would there be an issue with using sub domains - user.domain.com, or would sub directories be more optimal? Thank you in advance!

Domain authority not showing on root domain?
I was going through our site earlier w/ the mozBar (still learning the tools, new here) and saw the attached image. There were far more links to the subdomain (#s on the left) than the root domain (#s on right). This is strange to me, because we are not using any subdomains. All links point to either our root domain or subfolders off our root domain. Is this hurting our ranking for the root domain? Not sure what's up with this. Zz9j0.jpg
