Sitemaps:

Hello, doing an audit found in our sitemaps the tag which at the time was to say that the url was mobile. In our case the URL is the same for desktop and mobile.
Do you recommend leaving or removing it?
Thank you! -
Hi romaro,
From my understanding, using these tags as part of a mobile XML sitemap is not necessary and in fact, Google don't recommend having a separate mobile sitemap: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-mobile-sitemaps-20137.html
Instead, for a dynamically served site, the important things are:
- Use the Vary HTTP header to signal your changes depending on the user-agent.
- Detect user-agent strings correctly.
You can read more about Google's guidelines for dynamic serving here: https://developers.google.com/search/mobile-sites/mobile-seo/dynamic-serving
-
Google uses XML schemas to define the elements and attributes that can appear in your Sitemap file. A Sitemap may contain both core Sitemap elements and elements specific to Mobile.
So it defines which elements are tagged for mobiles
If my answer were useful don't forget to mark it as a good answer
Cheers -
Hello Roman, thanks for your answer.
We are a marketplace and do not use bootstrap and AMP, we use dynamic code to display the mobile or desktop version (not responsive), but the URL is the same. What is the benefit of the <mobile: mobile="">tag in the Sitemap?</mobile:>

Depends on how you have set up your website, I will assume that you use Bootstrap on AMP, so if the tag is used to trigger some elements or hide others based on the users device maybe is not a good idea to touch it.

Canonical sitemap URL different to website URL architecture
Hi, This may or may not be be an issue, but would like some SEO advice from someone who has a deeper understanding. I'm currently working on a clients site that has a bespoke CMS built by another development agency. The website currently has a sitemap with one link - EG: www.example.com/category/page. This is obviously the page that is indexed in search engines. However the website structure uses www.example.com/page, this isn't indexed in search engines as the links are canonical. The client is also using the second URL structure in all it's off and online advertising, internal links and it's also been picked up by referral sites. I suspect this is not good practice... however I'd like to understand whether there are any negative SEO effectives from this structure? Does Google look at both pages with regard to visits, pageviews, bounce rate, etc. and combine the data OR just use the indexed version? www.example.com/category/page - 63.5% of total pageviews

www.example.com/page - 34.31% of total pageviews Thanks

CMS Auto Generated Sitemap Work Around?
Hey Moz Community, The Shopify ecommerce platform auto generates xml sitemaps and robots.txt for you. Frustratingly there is no way to augment either of these. If I noindex on a page it will still show up in the site map... Causing inconstancy with the sitemap submitted to GWT. In theory if put the MY version of the sitemap on site and point GWT to MY version.. Would this solve the inconstancy ? Or would Googlebot go in and still crawl the default /sitemap.xml anyway? Any suggestions and insight is greatly appreciated!

Should I Edit Sitemap Before Submitting to GWMT?
I use the XML sitemap generator at http://www.auditmypc.com/xml-sitemap.asp and use the filter that forces the tool to respect robots.txt exclusions. This generator allows me to review the entire sitemap before downloading it. Depending on the site, I often see all kinds of non-content files still listed on the sitemap. My question is, should I be editing the sitemap to remove every file listed except ones I really want spidered, or just ignore them and let the Google spiderbot figure it all out after I upload-submit the XML?

Hosting sitemap on another server
I was looking into XML sitemap generators and one that seems to be recommended quite a bit on the forums is the xml-sitemaps.com They have a few versions though. I'll need more than 500 pages indexed, so it is just a case of whether I go for their paid for version and install on our server or go for their pro-sitemaps.com offering. For the pro-sitemaps.com they say: "We host your sitemap files on our server and ping search engines automatically" My question is will this be less effective than my installing it on our server from an SEO perspective because it is no longer on our root domain?
