Changing url (permalink) structure of website??
-
Currently I'm working on SEO of one website www.mocomi.com. I want to change url (permalink) structure of entire website which has more than 5000 pages.
Currently website have structure of http://mocomi.com/tenali-raman-the-kings-condition/
Which I want to change it to http://mocomi.com/fun/stories/tenali-raman/tenali-raman-the-kings-condition/
Likewise I want to change entire website permalink url structure to make site architecture more SEO friendly.
Which means I'am going to add only categories & subcategories before actual link.
Kindly guide with following questions which I need to move forward with this step.
How much is it worth to change URL structure?
Checklist or factors I need to consider while making this decision?
Is it a good practice to change URL's of entire website at once or Should I change it in Parts?
How much time it takes google to rank those urls again?
Which are the best practices to do so?

I agree with everyone above. A great tool for this may be SEO Yoast Premium. When you create categories that changes your permalink structure it automatically creates a 301 redirect for each page.

I recently did this with our site of a similar size. We had some categorized posts and a lot of date-based posts (like /issues/cwa/archives/2016/02/post-title) and we moved everything to new categories. We changed our domain name as well, which was an additional issue.
We did it all at once. The month we made the change we had about a 15% dip in organic traffic, which slowly grew the following month. By the next month (so starting about 60 days after the change) traffic was up 30% over our pre-change levels.
Now, not quite a year later, we are up 65% over our pre-change levels and still growing (even though there is still more work to be done). So for me, it was well worth it.
My biggest challenge was making sure that I had a careful and comprehensive 301 redirect table to share with the developers—it was a lot of content to categorize. I started with the pages that had the most traffic/conversions and went from there. I still had quite a few pages that were just brought along for the ride (they were outdated and had little traffic), which I just redirected into a general category. I am going through those bit by bit, updating, redirecting, removing as appropriate.
It's a big job, but it can be very rewarding!

I agree with Ramon in terms of changing the links. However, I'm not sure that the change you want to make will have the best impact. For example, http://mocomi.com/who-invented-zero/. This link is very easy to share, very easy to recognize and it is easy to index for the specific question. Moreover, "math for kids" is included in the title which is good. The place I think you need to work more is the specific category. In this case you have http://mocomi.com/learn/maths/. Why is "kids" not appearing anywhere here? What I want to suggest is that you need to conduct a keyword research first before making your changes. You need to pinpoint exactly WHAT you have to change and you need to know for sure WHY you want to do a specific change. Hope this helps.

Hi Jesh Krisna Murthy ,
To answer your questions:
-
As your site has lots of content in the different categories it makes a lot of sense to add these to the url structure. They will help users and crawlers understand how your site is laid out. They will also add relevant keywords to the urls which could benefit your rankings.
-
For doing this kind of a change you should analyse the following:
-
the work involved in doing this change (how easy is it to change this in your cms? in some cms´s like wordpress this change is pretty easy)
-
the work in the additional setup of the 301 redirects you need to send people landing on your old page to the new page and to pass on any link equity of those old pages.
-
Work involved in updating your internal links to these pages.
-
update and resubmit your sitemaps.
-
I would do this change all at once, though it effects many categories,it is only one change. And it could be more of an effort to try and split it up. If you want to be extra cautious though you could do this by category
-
When you have done this change correctly and submitted new sitemap to search engines this shouldn´t take to long for Google to pick up. I have seen 1-2 weeks and sometimes a bit more. And as you have setup correct 301´s you shouldn´t have to worry about this.
Hope this helps you.
regards

Properly changing title, URL and content for new keywords without harming other rankings.
Hello - We are looking to try to bring up some keywords in the SERPs that we are currently ranking fairly low for. We sell Christening clothing for children and people will use both Christening and Baptism to search for the same thing. We currently rank very high for Christening (#1 on Google for certain combinations) but we are fairly low on Baptism.
On-Page Optimization | | BabyBeauBelle
I am trying to figure out the best way to start getting Baptism up by changing some title, URL and content pages to include more Baptism keywords. My concern is messing with the existing because we rank so well for Christening. Since we are ecommerce we can vary this quite a bit on our products, but again I'm nervous to do so fearing changing the wrong things, too many products etc and in the process of trying to raise one set of keywords (baptism) we harm the other set (christening).
Any advice would be appreciated!0 -
Question about url structure for large real estate website
I've been running a large real estate rental website for the past few years and on May 8, 2013 my Google traffic dropped by about 50%. I'm concerned that my current url structure might be causing thin content pages for certain rental type + location searches. My current directory structure is:
On-Page Optimization | | Amped
domain.com/home-rentals/california/
domain.com/home-rentals/california/beverly-hills/
domain.com/home-rentals/california/beverly-hills/90210/
domain.com/apartment-rentals/california/
domain.com/apartment-rentals/california/beverly-hills/
domain.com/apartment-rentals/california/beverly-hills/90210/
etc.. I was thinking of changing it to the following:
domain.com/rentals/california/
domain.com/rentals/california/beverly-hills/
domain.com/rentals/california/beverly-hills/90210/ ** Note: I'd provide users the ability to filter their results by rental type - by default all types would be displayed. Another question - my listing pages are currently displayed as:
domain.com/123456 And I've been thinking of changing it to:
domain.com/123456-123-Street-City-State-Zip Should I proceed with both changes - one or the one - neither - or something else I'm not thinking of? Thank you in advance!!0 -
Usability-question on 2 of my websites
Hi all, It has been a while since I have been in this forum, but that's normally a great sign 🙂 Anyway these days I'm work on a "face-lift" on a couple of my sites (www.krydsord.dk, www.bingoforum.dk and www.alutagrender.dk), but also this face-lift should be more than just that. Hopefully it will help the usability to be better, and as a result of that - I hope it will make it easier for my visitors to easily find what they are looking for. The question is: I would like to ad, say, 25 words of description (mouse-over) in my top menu buttons. Why? Because, I believe that it's a possible problem that the menu just says "krydsord" (crosswords) in stead of a describing text saying something about "Push this button and you will see a complete list of all the cross words on Krydsord.dk). This way, I get the chance to add more text (for the Search Engines) and to guide my visitors in a way that I'm not capable of with the limitations my top menus give me as they are at this moment. Naturally, my visitors should be able to easily decline this "extra information", once they have got it once. Is this completely way off, or do you like the idea? More specifically: Will this be annoying for the visitors, will it have any positive effect on SEO matters? Actually I got partly inspired during a SEOmoz webinar (http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/designing-for-seo), even though it's not exactly what they are talking about in thwe webinar. For anybody who are curious (or just need to kill some time), you can have a look from 19:00 and watch it for about two minutes. Thanks a lot! Nicolai

How to Recover From Unstable Site Structure History
I have a site that has suffered several phases of restructuring. Apparently its owners were unsure as to which direction to take when it came to structuring their content and URL schema and subjected the site to several rounds of poorly thought through implementations (i.e. example.com/content/page-title, example.com/page-title, example.com/"silo"/page-title, etc.), all within a 8 month period. I posted the originating question here on this Q&A Forum. I want to thank EGOL and Cody for taking a stab at it. What would be a good strategy to help a site like the one I describe above begin ranking again?

2 Question about URL structure
Hello guys 1 - I have a question about the best structure for URLs from the point of view of SEO: Is it OK to use the URL as mywebsite.com.br/long-tail-article Or is better this mywebsite.com.br/category/long-tail-article 2 - When part of my keyword is already in my "category", for example: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing/digital-marketing-is-good I leave it as it is, or in the following way: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing-is-good NOTE: Do not take into account that this URL would be different from other URLs in this category

Is my H1 and H2 site structure proper?
If I have an h1 tag on the page that describes the purpose of the page, is it a bad idea to make all of the sub-headings h2 tags? A designer mentioned that it was frowned upon to make all of the secondary headings into h2 tags, or to use CSS to selectively style the heading tags.

SEO for One Page Websites
Hi Are there any SEO guidelines for "one page websites". I'm looking into the 'benefit' it might have in combination with exact match URLs. Many thanks in advance.
