Blog farm?
-
One of our clients has recently been approached by a competitor regarding a Link building service and SEO and as part of this they have supplied example sites that they "contact" to post articles that contain a link or links back to our client site. When we researched these sites we found that the sites did in fact have a good Domain Authority but the content was extremley dubious and the links were often forced into the articles in unnatural context. We also found that the Author page of these sites often had a similar URLs but the display names were changed. On the face of it these article sites look like a good idea and to an untrained eye they could appear good value. In fact they could be passing good value and may in fact work. I have found around 150 sites that i think share simialr traits but i gave up and I am sure there are many more.
My opinion is that this looks like a large farm of blogs that are utilising similar templates and author set up. I am just looking for any experience/thoughts on how to look at this. My feeling is that i dont want to be in anyway recommending this as a service yet my client may think that this is good value. Any experiences shared would be great.
thanks in advance for any comments.

Yep, they are not patient.
They need to consider that they are arriving at the battle 5, 10, 15 or 20 years late. Existing websites have been working all of that time and Google will not push them aside in favor of a noob who has invested very little in comparison.
If they want to see results they need to invest enough to become competitive. It's no different than me deciding that I am going to challenge Anthony Joshua and expect to step into the ring with him after three months of work.

Yeah...I agree. It is sad that people feel the need to contribute in this manner. It really doesnt help anyone in the long term. Good quality content (and the reputation to go with it) is always the way forward but can often be a longer game and people are not very patient.

If all it takes is for you to "submit an article" to get something published then those sites are going to fill up with crap in a hurry. After they fill up with crap their links will become poison and you will have an unnatural links problem.
We have sites with a lot of content and people are constantly writing to "get an article published". At first we received so much absolute crap that a lot of time was wasted. It didn't slow down until we started requiring an resume that clearly shows significant education and/or experience related to the submitted content, links to previously published content, and a face slapping bullet point that we don't accept linkbuilder content.
Now we don't get a lot of content offers but what is offered is mostly from educated and experienced people who simply want to get a message out and obtaining a link to their website is not a consideration. Still a few linkbuilder types will try to fake or argue or weasel their way in. These are much easier to reject than the ones that we get from certified crackpots who submit high quality authorship that is too far on the fringe of our topics.

Thanks for your response. I suppose this is a common issue. It is much easier to sell a magical quick fix instead of long term vision. Unfortunatley uneducated people desire that short term, minimal effort apporach and dont care until they find out it doesnt work or makes things worse. This is especially true when sold to them by an uneducated sales person (usually following a script)

Hi there
The best advice I can give here is if it doesn't feel natural or right, then it's more than likely not. Advise your client the best you can and arm yourself with as much information about the sites / the possible repercussions of taking this route as possible. At the end of the day, your job is to guide your client as best as you can and let them make an educated decision.
Last note, based on experience, Google hates link farms / link schemes. If these pages / sites have the scent of that, I'd steer clear.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Links from my Own Blog to my Own Website and Link Scheme
Hi There, I use my own blog to give advices and offer information related to my business service. Of course in terms of SEO my blog is useful not only to expand my brand presence but also to acquire long-tail traffic. I use to insert a maximum of one link with a relative matching anchor text in every article of my blog pointing to my own webpage. Said that, the questions are as follows: Am I involuntarily participating in a Link Scheme with my blog? And If so, how many links can I send to my own webpage ? Shall I limit the number of links to a minimum? Thanks a lot for your advices.

High Quality Guest Blog Swapping
I have tried checking out a few of the big guest blogging sites out there but every time I create a killer article the site that offers to publish it is normally some suspiciously spammy side with a low Moz score. Does anyone know any sites where guest bloggers can link up to swap high quality blog posts. Maybe one that requires some filtering of poor quality host blogs?

Why aren't my blog links counting?
In our blog posts, we frequently include links to our product pages on our official site. However, the blog root domain is not showing up on Open Site Explorer for any of these product pages. In other words, why isn't Google counting our blog as a unique root domain? If it helps, here is the link to the blog: http://jampaper.wordpress.com/ Thanks for your help!

Same Content on Different Blogs
We host our blog on WordPress as part of our site. The blog "address" is www.website.com/blog/post. If I were to take the same content that's on this blog and post it on a Blogger account we have, would Google consider that duplicate content? If not, would there be any benefit to doing this?

Link Building for a New Blog
We are setting up a new blog and I was wondering what is the best way to build good quality links for a new website? I have been researching this quite a bit on the forums and a lot of people talk about writing good content which I agree with however no one will find that content if we are not ranking in Google for our keywords. From what I have read the following is what I should be doing Directory's Creating Link-bait (Info-graphics) PR Releases or Getting News Sites to link to us I have heard a lot of mention of using Articles sites like ezinearticles but I have also read that Post Panda that they dont have as much link juice as they once had and also I don't think that for a Blog that we should be using it as well but maybe I am wrong? Would appreciate some peoples suggestions

New Blog
Hello, We have an online soccer equipment retail store (http://www.soccerstop.com) that we have been working on to get higher ranking results in many different areas of specific product pages, as well as our general homepage for several years. SeoMoz has been an excellent addition for us to learn and analyze, etc. In addition to our current PPC, and SEO efforts, we are going to create a blog as we have many thoughts, opinions and interesting information for what hopefully will be a good sized audience of soccer enthusiasts! We currently have a person who goes on other soccer blogger websites and offers our thoughts and expressions, but we now want to give our own blog. My thought is to create a subdirectory of our domain something like: http://www.soccerstop.com/blog as that seems what is recommended in many posts here in this forum. I am also thinking of using wordpress blog as it also seems recommended. We have a lot of ideas about content, and feel we will bring people to our blog in various ways through our existing and coming customers at the retail online store. However, it seems to get the best backlink performance possible out of our new blog, we need to join blog networks to get our blogs posted on outside third party websites. Is this right, and where would I begin to understand and start this process? I understand the first step is to get our blog started, but I want to foundationally have an idea where we are going with this as we build. This way it is built in a sound way, ready to be as effective as possible! Please understand I am a builder and not the blogger, which is why the structure and initial setup of syndication is so important to me! Thanks for any advice.

Build links through blogging?
Although my site is a wordpress site it presently has about as many static pages as blog posts. The site has a lot of directory links and is doing pretty good with a PR3 after about a year. When I first put the site up I had a well known blogging expert help me with the permalinks and a couple of other things and he said that with a blog there is no need to build links, it can all be done through natural link acquisition off of the blog posts. I was skeptical at the time because it seemed that a lawyer's site was something not a lot of people would be interested enough in to link to it. Now I am thinking about trying his stragegy, as 1 of my blog posts that I put up on a very topical subject immediately got about 15 backlinks. My questions are: Is it reasonable to try to build links just by posting frequent topical blog posts? If yes, should I have links in the blog posts to my home page, to internal pages, or both? \ Paul
