Question, Directory Listing Text Best Practices
-
I have been doing some reading on directory link anchor text and it appears the best practice for 2018 and beyond would be to build your brand. For Example Sue's Shoes and her website is shoesbysue.com
Directory Anchor Text As Follows
shoesbysue.com
http://wwwshoesbysue.com
Sue's ShoesNow my question would be if you had a competitor site who was top position on google and ALL anchor text for all directories at leat 90% was
Buy Shoes Here
I do not understand how they are following best practices? What do you recommend to be safe.

Just bare links and natural links go to your homepage and give it power. Then links from your homepage to other pages on the site contain the anchor text that tells google what the page is about. Also sometimes external places will link to particular pages inside your website (deep linking) with anchor text or not. Better with but it's becoming less and less important as time goes by. I don't think we'll all be talking about anchor text or maybe not even about links at all in a few years time.
Some of my best pages are ranking number one nationally (for the whole of the UK) and they are super-high competition and they don't have one single backlink. That must tell you something...
Likewise some of my pages I've done 'linkbuilding campaigns' and spent weeks and months building links to and it's not made a blind bit of difference.
Please remember to mark the answer as a good one if you like it. Helps me get recognition for helping out.
And feel free to ask more questions. I only started learning SEO in May 2017 and my site back then had 900 users a month. Since then I wrote and optimised about 60 pages and we now get 32,000 users a month and our business has tripled in size. Linking was the last thing on my mind. Writing good content came first. And proving to google that we are who we say we are with links from universities and professional bodies for the dentists. those are the real power links. You must have suppliers who will link to you in their 'find a distributer' sections?

Hi Ed
Greatly appreciate the response and help THANKS, I have checked both those links working on the 50 list as we speak. While you made a great point, these are all relatively new links my competitor has added in the recent weeks to months. I read a great article on how you want to use anchor text for your brand first and foremost with less than 10% anchor text to be about the specific topic of the page. But what you said makes sense how does Google know that content is about that specific topic if the only anchor text is on your brand name?

Anchor Text is only one of the many ways google understands what a page is about. And links are only one of the many ways google verifies a domains authority to rank it.
Be careful of modelling your 'top competitors' because they may have been doing SEO on the site fr 10 years which means they may have all these dodgy "exact match" anchor texts and even dodgier domain listings.
You only need national, local and hyperlocal citations for your business. The practice of adding it to web directories is hopelessly out of date and worth nothing. You're more likely to get a penalty.
Google have said that you may use exact match internal anchor text liberally but if you start using exact match EXTERNAL anchor text (i.e links from other sites) then you'll get an algorithmic penalty or even a manual action.
Take a look here to get your first 50 links, here for some link strategies that will help your site and are up to date and STAY OFF THE DIRECTORIES. I answered a directories question the other day so it should be available in the search. We've done soem tests on using directories and it really, really doesn't work. Be aware this is not the same as the ESSENTIAL practice of 'citation building'
As for anchor text you have to make it look natural and mix it up. But just using bare URL's and the name of your site will work for now while you're building your brand. But blindly following the 'big players' out of date tactics can be suicide. All their dodgy links will still be there it's just that google will have updated and discounted them. But if you start getting bad links and over-optimising anchor text when that is known bad practice then you'll get stung.
Hope this helps. Please remember to mark it helpful if it's helped!

I have a new website and would like to use the keywords my competitors are using and was wondering the best way to take a look using Moz Pro?
The website is www.fapwrap.com - it's a new adult wall decals website. [editor's note: may not be safe for some workplaces] The wall decals we have are obviously a bit more niche than the bigger competitors, but I want to get into the first page to see how it helps us. I'm slowly taking over some kws like "xbox wraps" and "ps4 wraps" but those have low search volume and I feel like "wall decals" will help - though it's highly competitive. Suggestions? I just kinda want to plug in my competition and pick from their list of existing kws..... Ha.

What is the best ranking checker solution for 100's of sites
Hello, We used IBP for over 2 years and it worked great. We were able to schedule every clients site to auto run and email our clients. Now IBP is terrible due to Google's new updates. We are looking for something cost effective since we have 100's of websites we check on a weekly basis. We are either looking for a great software that uses proxies to check, or a service that offers unlimited sites and is cheap per month. We have searched for many, however there are so many that we aren't sure what is good and what isn't. We tried Jonathan Ledgers new one and it's not good, we looked into Web CEO and it's per amount of websites which is expensive. We tried cute rank tracker which is free and added proxies and it doesn't work, it lags out and doesn't even track ranks properly. It wouldn't hurt if it had a built in report analysis of the website as well. So whats a good one?

I am experimenting with Raven Tools and have a question
Since I am an in-house SEO I'm a little slower to adopt some of the paid tools out there, but I am thinking of jumping in and opting for the paid version of Raven Tools. Can anyone who's currently using Raven Tools suggest how and where is the best place to export backlinks info for import into the Link Manager? I want something that will give me as much of the data as possible already filled in (i.e. PR, domain authority, anchor text, follow/no follow information etc.). I don't mind if I have to rearrange it, I just don't want to have to be inputting things like PR and anchor text one at a time by hand. I do have SEOMoz pro and I see that I can pull a CSV of backlinks and do two separate reports, one for followed and one for not followed links, etc. I'm just wondering if anyone has any additional suggestions. How about Ahrefs.com? Is anyone using the paid version of that tool in conjunction with Raven Tools for Link Management? Is there a better tool out there for Link Management than Raven Tools? (I just found this link in a Q & A thread for an open source SEO panel to try...http://www.seopanel.in/ - anyone using that one?) Thanks all!

List ranking analysis for all keywords?
I would love to see the option of having the ranking analysis listed for all my keywords! As it it now I have to click and get the numbers one by one and manually create a spreadsheet in order to have an overview of which keywords to pursue. I want to see my google ranking for each keyword next to information on how many people search for that term (in my country of choice - google.xxx) and the keyword competition in % Please tell me there's a way to do this and save me a truckload of time!

Question regarding the SEOmoz Report Card
A report card is directed towards one keyword. What if one is to target two keywords on one page? For example, if I want to target SEO in Miami, Miami SEO, and SEO Miami it would be impossible to get an "A" on the report card for all three. What is the best way to target two-three keys on one page? Lets say these keywords are equally beneficial to the site, and we do not want to have to use hierarchy for one key over the other. Would it be wise to build a page for each? I feel like that would be redundant to the user. It says I need the keyword 4 times in the body so I should have 4 "SEO Miami" and 4 "Miami SEO". High importance factors. What makes them high importance? The keyword should be in the beginning of the title. How does this make sense as a high importance factor. Many titles are going to sound spammy if this is how they are written. Lets use Miami SEO again as an example: Miami SEO from [company name] bla bla bla sounds like spam. Learn about SEO in Miami from [company name] sound much better and is probably more likely to get clicked on. How important are these High Importance factors? I was always under the impression that we build the site for the user however the report card changes that perspective.

About private questions
Seems my last private question was on March 23 -- so why would I have to wait until June to ask another? I believe I made a reply right at the first of April, which wasn't answered... and I haven't asked another private question yet... not that I have one now, just wonder why the wait that seems longer than a "calendar month"? _Cindy

Duplicate page titles are the same URL listed twice
The system says I have two duplicate page titles. The page titles are exactly the same because the two URLs are exactly the same. These same two identical URLs show up in the Duplicate Page Content also - because they are the same. We also have a blog and there are two tag pags showing identical content - I have blocked the blog in robots.txt now, because the blog is only for writers. I suppose I could have just blocked the tags pages.
