General SSL Questions After Move
-
Hello,
We have moved our site to https, Google Analytics seems to be tracking correctly. However, I have seen some conflicting information, should I create a new view in analytics?
Additionally, should I also create a new https property in Google search console and set it as the preferred domain? If so, should I keep the old sitemap for my http property while updating the sitemap to https only for the https property?
Thirdly, should I create a new property as well as new sitemaps in Bing webmaster?
Finally, after doing a crawl on our http domain which has a 301 to https, the crawl stopped after the redirect, is this a result of using a free crawling tool or will bots not be able to crawl my site after this redirect?
Thanks for all the help in advance, I know there are a lot of questions here.

No.
Just keep an eye on it. If you continue to see impressions and clicks, scan your site again just to make sure all content has been converted and there aren't any lingering files hardcoded with http. You server-side redirect will take care of it. The only possible downside is the unnecessary redirect which slows rendering a bit. Not a show stopper.

Thanks for the great responses, Donna and Trenton. I just had one follow up question - I am still seeing small amounts of search console data on my http property. While I have read that this is not uncommon, it is mildly concerning as I force https server-side. Should I be alarmed by this?

Awesome, thank you for answering everything!

Hi Tom3_15,
Should I create a new view in analytics? No. There's no need and you want to easily compare before and after.
Should I also create a new https property in Google search console and set it as the preferred domain? Yes
If so, should I keep the old sitemap for my http_ property while updating the sitemap to https only for the https property? _Keep the old sitemap for your http property. Add the new sitemap (with https URLs) to the new (https) property.
Thirdly, should I create a new property as well as new sitemaps in Bing webmaster? Yes
Finally, after doing a crawl on our http_ domain which has a 301 to https, the crawl stopped after the redirect, is this a result of using a free crawling tool or will bots not be able to crawl my site after this redirect? _I don't know why your crawl stopped after the redirect. I use screaming frog and it continues to crawl after the 301 so it might, as you suggest, be a function or shortcoming of the particular tool you're using. BOTs should be able to continue to crawl your site after the redirect. Google certainly can.

Canonical question for cross-listed product listings
We have products that are listed across multiple categories. This results in muliple urls for the PDP, for example: mystore.com/shirts/shirt-101.html mystore.com/shirts/pink-shirts/shirt-101.html They make use of the canonical tag and point back to only one product listing url, however Google has indexed both urls in some cases. Has anyone else run up against this and does anyone have advice on how this should be handled?

Question About Thin Content
Hello, We have an encyclopedia type page on our e-commerce site. Basically, it's a page with a list of terms related to our niche, product definitions, slang terms, etc. The terms on the encyclopedia page are each linked to their own page that contains the term and a very short definition (about 1-2 sentences). The purpose of these is to link them on product pages if a product has a feature or function that may be new to our customers. We have about 82 of these pages. Are these pages more likely to help us because they're providing information to visitors, or are they likely to hurt us because of the very small amount of content on each page? Thanks for the help!

Disavow questions
Pretty sure I know the answers to these but someone asked me to make absolutely sure so here goes, any opinions welcome: If i disavow a whole domain does it include all sub-domains on the domain also?- my answer is clearly yes. If i have network of links really bad linking to my website that are already nofollow but awful websites to be linked on, is it worth putting them in the disavow list anyway to basically tell Google literally no association? I know the whole point of disavow is to essentially nofollow the link. Opinions much appreciated, thank you guys.

IMPACTS on Moving Online Store to New Platform
I, I have this online store, http://www.filtrationmontreal.com/ built on osCommerce. This platform is NOT SEO friendly and I expecting to move it to a new platform, probably, http://www.americommerce.com/ Can I limit the SEO impact when moving this store? The domaine will be the same, but every other url on the site will change. I only know the basics of SEO, and only copy html code when I need to. So my knowledge are limited. Using Google Analytics, I have the most popular page url visit on the current store. To limit impact, I thought I should copy the most popular page URL of the curent store and do a 301 redirect on the store platform. Do you think this my limit the impact? Would there be a other way to limit SEO impact on Google search results? I don't want to be penalize if the search and up on a 401 page. Can anybody help me? Thank you, BigBlaze

Webmaster Tools Site Map Question
I have TLD that has authority and a number of micro-sites built off of the primary domain. All sites relate to the same topic, as I am promoting a destination. The primary site and each micro-site have their own CMS installation, but the domains are mapped accordingly. www.regionalsite.com/ <- primary

Keyword ranking not moving
Hello, We have a very important keyword for our website (www.decorplanet.com) that hasn't moved in any direction in over a year. The keyword is "bathroom vanities". Our current SEO company has told us that the previous company has "over- optimized/linked" for this particular keyword and now Google is penalizing us for this. They told us that we need to leave it alone for a while and concentrate on other keywords and this one should naturally come back up (I should mention that at some point, we were much higher than where we are right now for that particular keyword). Many of our other high-profile keywords have been moving nicely to the first page. Keywords like "modern bathroom vanities", "antique bathroom vanities", "contemporary bathroom vanities", but the one that we really want ("bathroom vanities") hasn't budged at all. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. Is it possible that Google put us in some sort of a "sand-box" - I mean we are on page 2 so it doesn't sound like that's the case. It's just very bizarre that we can't seem to do anything with this keyword. Really appreciate any thoughts or input on this.

301 redirect problems on site not yet moved
I have re-designed one of my sites, the old site is all static pages on a Windows server, I have made the new sites and it is on a new server and is running on Wordpress. I have just finished testing it and so am nearly ready to switch over the nameservers to the new server, however I'm having some problems with 301 redirects. I have tried to set up a few 301 redirects on the new server to test before I change nameservers but they don't appear to be working. I would have imagined that they should (even though the actual page isn't hosted on the new server) or am I being very stupid here and I can't test a 301 redirect until the nameservers have been changed. Redirect 301 /magazines.htm http://.../~account/magazine-freebies Obviously the above with the stars (*) is the server address and route to my account.

Very Quick Joomla Question
Hi, A client's site was previously built in Joomla and he wants us to reproduce content that was in there, but the Joomla site is no longer live and has come to me as an archive containing all the files and folders that were included. So, I am looking at the files and folders without Joomla installed. Can someone tell me quickly how to find the where the actual page content was stored? I started looking, but there are some folders I cannot open and nothing that looks as I expected. Would appreciate a hint or two from someone who knows Joomla well.. Life is too short! Thanks Sha
