No Control Over Subdomains - What Will the Effect Be?
-
Hello all,
I work for a university and I my small team is responsible for the digital marketing, website, etc. We recently had a big initiative on SEO and generating traffic to our website.
The issue I am having is that my department only "owns" the www subdomain. There are lots of other subdomains out there. For example, a specific department can have its own subdomain at department.domain.com and students can have their own webpage at students.domain.com, etc.
I know the possibilities of domain cannibilization, but has any one run into long term problems with a similar situation or had success in altering the views of a large organization?
If I do get the opportunity to help some of these other domains, what is best to help our overall domain authority? Should the focus be on removing similar content to the www subdomain or cleaning up errors? Some of these subdomains have hundreds of 4XX errors.

Thank you for that reply. As you mentioned, I think I am more struggling with my task and that unified mission across all subdomains in an industry where only a handful of institutions can make that happen.
There was lots of good information to take from this. Thank you.

It all depends upon how intensely these domains and sub-domains are networked together. If they're very strongly interlinked, Google will likely consider them to be a single website. That brings benefits such as the pooling of SEO authority, but also weaknesses such as the transference or spread of Google penalties. That being said, if one sub domain really doesn't have their sh*t together but other departments have created genuinely useful resources, Google will be loathe to impact useful pages just because 'someone else in the same family' doesn't really know what they're doing.
The largest problem will be lack of vision and operating within the confines of an organisation where, people all have different ideas instead of letting data do the talking. All decisions should be data-led. If the data says, this area of your site is the most important and it also has the biggest opportunities - all efforts should be focused there. If you fundamentally lack the ability to direct all of the things which impact marketing (content, UX, CRO, SEO, design) across all sub-domains with one unified vision, you'll always be limited in terms of the gains you can make. On the other hand within such an organisation, that may be well understood and respected (thus alleviating some tensions)
Domain authority does not come from you, your resources or anything that your organisation does. Authority is a reflection of how popular and useful, the rest of the web finds your websites, pages, resources and content. Editorial (not advertorial or ad-based) links to your live pages from recent, authoritative sources garner your domain (and pages) additional authority. What you're struggling against is the shell of academic culture. It's a sector where, if people do X and teach Y they earn Z. They are happy to be institutionalised (sorry if that offends anyone but it's true) so they seldom consider the impact which the views of others have upon their success
I remember I had a debate with a uni tutor once who got on my case because I complained about their attendance (in terms of being a lecturer). They said academia is not a business and that I shouldn't hold it as a service I was paying for. Further down the line I was unable to finish an essay within the specified time limit and was told "well in the future, when you are employed - your employer will expect you to be able to cut to the chase. Knowledge for the sake of knowledge isn't worth anything" - **small wonder **I went ballistic at the double-standards which had been put across to me
The point is, your organisation's authority isn't determined (in SEO or real-life terms) by their arbitrary academic choices. It's determined by performance, and how useful people find the specified website or organisation. Everyone in life asks "what's the ROI on that?" - especially since tuition fees are pretty high in the USA and creeping up in the UK too
When you get good, non-manipulative, editorial links from external sources (of high relevance and repute), which Google doesn't think have been produced 'for SEO alone' - your SEO authority grows larger. With more authority in a given area, you have more power to rank (as long as errors and crawl barrier don't inhibit that authority from cascading down to the relevant sub-pages). Removing roadblocks like errors, could make you rank much better. But if your authority is low, it'll do jack diddly squat
You need to engage your organisation from a more PR-esque perspective, then when you have built up some good links - tackle the errors much more aggressively. That's my 2pence anyway

Is Building a Local Directory of Businesses on a Subdomain Good SEO?
Hello Fellow Moz'ers: I own a small digital shop in a major US city. We had a marketing idea which I'd like some input on the soundness of. We are creating a professional services directory of 'digital professional services providers' in our hometown. The directory's membership will only be open to firms located within our city limits. The directory will be curated and maintained, ongoing, by us. Our motivation is 75% selfish and 25% benevolent. The idea is that, by building the directory on our subdomain, we hopefully will collect links, which ultimately will enhance search visibility. But I'm concerned about the devaluation directories have incurred in recent years and I've even seen advice given to the effect that listings in some directories might be harmful to a site's link profile. It is not our intention to harm those who might list in our directory. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

.ac.uk subdomain vs .co.uk domain
I'd be grateful if I could check my thinking... I've agreed to give some quick advice to a non profit organisation who are in the process of moving their website from an ac.uk subdomain to a .co.uk domain. They believe that their SEO can be improved considerably by making this migration. From my experience, I don't see how this could be the case. Does the unique domain in itself offer enough ranking benefit to justify this approach? The subdomain is on a very high authority domain with many pre-existing links, which makes me even more nervous about this approach. Does anyone have any opinions on this that they could share please? I'm guessing that it is possible to migrate safely and that there might be branding advantages, but from an actual SEO point of view there is not that much benefit? It looks like most of their current traffic is branded traffic.

Will SEO cause a drop in the number of impressions?
Hello, I have been a member of the Moz community for a long time. I very seldom ask questions here but this time I really need your help to make sure I will not make mistakes that will negatively affect my site. My site monetizes according to the number of impressions visualized by the users who visit it. I now want to try to optimize it by using all those nice SEO techniques I have learned through Moz. My goal is to make sure that if I use the various SEO strategies, I will still be able to obtain the high number of impressions I get now. If not, I prefer to leave the situation untouched and I will not start optimizing the site for SEO. Please kindly read the situation below and give me a little support to make sure I am doing the right thing. I would like to ask for your professional advice to solve and issue related to duplicate content. Please visit my site: www.chhedonna.it. The sitemap has indexed 21.890 articles, but if I digit the command 'site:www.chedonna.it', I obtain 158.000 results.I believe that the duplicated content has emerged due to three errors I would like to indicate in order for you to tell me whether my interpretation is correct or not: The article writers made a mistake in that although the content of the articles is different, they have employed the same title for all of them. Therefore, you can see 5 articles with similar/duplicated Tag Titles but the content of said articles is different. For example, http://www.chedonna.it/attualita/cronaca-rosagossip/2012/12/03/heidi-klum-senza-trucco-e-parrucco-foto and http://www.chedonna.it/attualita/cronaca-rosagossip/2012/12/03/heidi-klum-senza-trucco-e-parrucco-foto-2/ are different articles (i.e., the content of the articles is different from each other) that have been published using the same titles. If I inserted the 'follow-noindex' tag to 3 of the 4 duplicates, as shown in the example above, would that be a solution? I fear that if I did insert the follow-noindex, I would cause a drop in the number of impressions visualized by my site's users. It is important to point out, in fact, that I monetize the site via the number of impressions I generate. Therefore, it is fundamental that I do not compromise the number of impressions that the site gets, if I try to optimize it for SEO reasons. On the other hand, I believe that the idea to operate via a 'rel canonical' would not be right, considering that the content of every post having the same title is different, that is, the articles are different even if they focus on the same topic. Also, I would not find it beneficial to use a '301 redirect', since the number of duplicated Titles Tags is very consistent. 2. The second error concerns the duplicate content due to the images that have been included in the articles. For instance, http://www.chedonna.it/che-donna-di-mondo/fare-la-valigia/2012/08/06/campeggio-vacanza-in-liberta/attachment/tenda/ http://www.chedonna.it/che-donna-di-mondo/fare-la-valigia/2012/08/06/campeggio-vacanza-in-liberta/attachment/tenda-2/ http://www.chedonna.it/che-miss/2012/12/04/tatuaggi-fiore-di-loto-significato-e-foto/attachment/tatuaggio-fiore-di-loto-2/ http://www.chedonna.it/che-miss/2013/03/15/tatuaggi-fiore-di-loto-significato-e-foto-2/attachment/tatuaggio-fiore-di-loto-2-2/. I could solve this problem by preventing the media indexing. But I fear that this would produce a very high number of '404 error' messages. If such a thing did happen, my site would stop monetizing overall and I cannot allow this to occur, as you can understand. My very important question is the following: if I prevent the indexing of the photos, will I get in return a drop in the number of impressions that my site would normally generate? 3. Duplicate content generated by the indexing of archive subpages. For example: http://www.chedonna.it/tag/angelica-e-ferdinando/ http://www.chedonna.it/tag/angelica-e-ferdinando/page2/ http://wwwchedonna.it/tag/angelica-e-ferdinando/page3/ If I prevented the media indexing, will I get in return a drop in the number of impressions and many 404 errors? Thank you very much for taking the time to help me sort out this very important issue. Cheers, Sal

Full-page video background and its effect on SEO?
Hi, we're planning on implementing a full-page video as our homepage's background. In addition to the effect on page loading time, are there any other SEO issues this could cause? Thanks in advance for any help!

What will happen after I 301 this domain?
A while back I created a new website. Somehow my "scratch" copies of the site got indexed even though I didn't have links built to them. (In the future I will use noindex tags when I am playing around with designing). Now, I have three versions of the site online...let's call them TheRealSite.com and Practice1.com and Practice2.com. Practice1.com and Practice2.com now rank #1 for their main keyword. (It's a relatively uncompetitive niche). TheRealSite.com is somewhere lower than page 20 despite having an exact keyword match domain name. I'm assuming that Google considered it duplicate content as it is the exact same thing as Practice1 and 2. I had considered simply removing Practice1 and 2 from the server, but I was worried that if I did that, I would lose my #1 rankings if TheRealSite didn't recover. So, what I've done is 301 redirect Practice1 and Practice2 to TheRealSite. I'm guessing that over time TheRealSite will come back to #1 and then I can just remove the files from Practice1 and Practice2. Is this the best way to handle this situation?
