Dynamic referenced canonical pages based on IP region and link equity question
-
Hi all,
My website uses relative URLs that has PHP to read a users IP address, and update the page's referenced canonical tag to an region specific absolute URL for ranking / search results.
E.g. www.example.com/category/product - relative URL referenced for internal links / external linkbuilding
If a US IP address hits this link, the URL is the same, but canonicalisation is updated in the source to reference www.example.com**/us/**category/product, so all ranking considerations are pointed to that page instead. None of these region specific pages are actually used internally within the site.
This decision was done so external links / blog content would fit a user no matter where they were coming from.
I'm assuming this is an issue in trying to pass link equity with Googlebot, because it is splitting the strength between different absolute canonical pages depending on what IP it's using to crawl said links (as the relative URL will dynamically alter the canonical reference which is what ranking in SERPs)
Any assistance or information no matter how small would be invaluable. Thanks!

Either way, switching canonicals from one to another, it will do no good in terms of equity or in terms of spamminess. If you have hreflangs done, then you should be good.

I should of mentioned that hreflang tags are in place and working correctly with the pages for each country being indexed correctly. I'm more concerned about link equity.

Oh boy..
Couple words come to mind - cloaking, black hat and penalization.
By definition, a canonical link is for telling search engines what page (singular) to rank INSTEAD of a page where a canonical link is specified.
Every time crawler bot goes to your page, it says "aha, i need to rank page A instead of the one I'm on right now". So if you "change your mind" every other time crawler visits your website, search engines will just disregard your canonical tags, thinking they are broken. As for link equity - link is always pointing to 1 page, and then that equity is passed to the page, which is canonically linked. So, if you change your canonical, link equity won't be distributed between new and old canonical pages, there is no such thing as "link equity memory".
What you might wanna look into instead is hreflang links - they are telling search engines that there are different pages, created specifically for different countries/languages/regions. However, in this case, content on these pages should be different/unique, serving specific needs of users in that specific country or region.
Hope this helps.

Conditional Noindex for Dynamic Listing Pages?
Hi, We have dynamic listing pages that are sometimes populated and sometimes not populated. They are clinical trial results pages for disease types, some of which don't always have trials open. This means that sometimes the CMS produces a blank page -- pages that are then flagged as thin content. We're considering implementing a conditional noindex -- where the page is indexed only if there are results. However, I'm concerned that this will be confusing to Google and send a negative ranking signal. Any advice would be super helpful. Thanks!

Replace dynamic paramenter URLs with static Landing Page URL - faceted navigation
Hi there, got a quick question regarding faceted navigation. If a specific filter (facet) seems to be quite popular for visitors. Does it make sense to replace a dynamic URL e.x http://www.domain.com/pants.html?a_type=239 by a static, more SEO friendly URL e.x http://www.domain.com/pants/levis-pants.html by creating a proper landing page for it. I know, that it is nearly impossible to replace all variations of this parameter URLs by static ones but does it generally make sense to do this for the most popular facets choose by visitors. Or does this cause any issues? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance

Does a non-canonical URL pass link juice?
Our site received a great link from URL A, which was syndicated to URL B. But URL B is canonicalized to URL A. Does the link on URL B pass juice to my site? (See image below for a visual representation of my question) zgbzqBy

Internal links question
I've read that Google frowns upon large numbers of internal links. We're building a site that helps users browse a list of shows via dozens of genres. If the genres are expose, say, as a pulldown menu as opposed to a list of static links, and selecting the pulldown option filters the list of shows, would those genres count against our internal links count?

I get warnings for overly dynamic urls, but have canonical links in place.
Hi, Seomoz gives me warnings for overly dynamic urls. This is mostly caused by a crumbtrail system. I have a canonical link in the header for all the urls I receive warnings on, should I still worry about this? Thanks!

Question about WhiteHat Quality Link Building Technique!
Hello, I am using Opensite Explorer as well as Link Builder from wordtracker to find good links which either link to my competitors or either links pointing to top 20 sites in my niche keyword. Then my team follow each link and find Directory Links Forum Profile Links Bookmark Links PR / Article Sites Links Guest Blog Post Sites Links... Then we make links manually to those sites for our websites as well. Is this a good whitehat strategy for long term good SEO, i believe opensiteexplorer's high page authority links shall worth in a long run. Also I timely post article to my blog and then distribute it to my twitter as well as run few social bookmarks on my article posted on my blog. I want to know community that am i doing SEO for link building in right way or any suggestion there from honorable SEOMOz Members. I know content is key however we are an ecommerece sites mostly thus we need to timely create backlinks as well to stay in competition. I will wait for feedback of honorable community if we are on right direction for SEO or not?

Noindex junk pages with inbound links?
I recently came across what is to me a new SEO problem. A site I consult with has some thin pages with a handful of ads at the top, some relevant local content sourced from a third party beneath that... and a bunch of inbound links to said pages. Not just any links, but links from powerful news sites. My impression is that said links are paid (sidebar links, anchor text... nice number of footprints.) Short version: They may be getting juice from these links. A preliminary lookup for one page's keywords in the title finds it top 100 on Google. I don't want to lose that juice, but do think the thin pages they link to can incur Panda's filter. They've got the same blurb for lots of [topic x] in [city y], plus the sourced content (not original...). So I'm thinking about noindexing said pages to avoid Panda filters. Also, as a future pre-emptive measure, I'm considering figuring out what they did to get these links and aiming to have them removed if they were really paid for. If it was a biz dev deal, I'm open to leaving them up, but that possibility seems unlikely. What would you do? One of the options I laid out above or something else? Why? p.s. I'm asking this on my blog (seoroi.com/blog/ ) too, so if you're up for me to quote you (and link to your site, do say so. You aren't guaranteed to be quoted if you answer here, but it's one of the easier ways you'll get a good quality link. p.p.s. Related note: I'm looking for intermediate to advanced guest posts for my blog, which has 2000+ RSS subs. Email me at gab@ my site if you're interested. You can also PM me here on SEOmoz, though I don't login as frequently.
