Are there any benefits to having dashes in file names?
-
Through searching, I can find lots of discussion regarding "dash vs underscore", but am having trouble with an even simpler question:
Is there any SEO difference between using
http://www.broadway.com/shows/milliondollarquartet.php
vs.
-
A lot of coders like giving filenames underscores rather than dashes, because when you select (doubleclick) a filename_like_this all the text is selected, whereas a filename-like-this may only have part of it highlighted - so to me, an underscore is more akin to 'treat this like a word' and a dash is 'treat this like a space' - and either is better than %20!
For SEO though, the dash=space is worth it where:
-
the URL string is long (thisisnotaseasytoread in the address bar, this-is-much-easier-to-comprehend) - I think that helps users, which in turn signals to Google that you're being helpful
-
if the concatenation of the words would be confusing to a stemming programme - see here for examples http://independentsources.com/2006/07/12/worst-company-urls/
-
if someone wanted/had to manually type a url, a dash is quicker/easier as you don't need the shift key (which you do for an underscore)
-
if someone shares (pastes) a raw, long URL, with dashes in you have a chance it will wrap in a blog or wherever -
that looks dreadful, whereas you might get away with high-on-the-hill-stood-a-lonely-goatherd
- I find that it also helps with link-naming consistency, it's easier for you to spot your own typos or linking errors (so fewer 404s to hunt down)
Sorry, must dash

From what I've come to understand, dashes are seen as spaces by most search engines, so it helps to delineate your phrase. milliondollarquartet would be seen as one word, while million-dollar-quartet would be seen as 3 and would be more readable by both users and search engines, and it would help you get some SEO juice for the phrase, while milliondollarquartet would probably not be searched upon.
That having been said, I'm still fairly new to SEO, so hopefully you'll get more answers. But that's been my understanding thus far.

A smart robot can parse that out using algorithms called stemmers... But what about less sophisticated robots? Will ask.com or lesser known SE's get your keywords right without the dashes? What about a combination of words that can be separated in different ways to give different meaning?
And what about human readers? Which is easier for you to read?
Dashes and underscores are the URL equivalent of spaces. They help human readers and robot crawlers parse out what your URL is supposed to be.

Site Name as displayed in serp is a completely random company in an entirely different industry!
Hello! I am looking at a site that has its site name displayed incorrectly in the SERPS. The site name is showing as a company from the airline industry while the site in question provides hypnotherapy services. This issue is on every page except the homepage. I have checked source code and the structured data. Local business structured data with the correct company name - I can't find anything at all in the source code that refers to this random airline! Thank you for reading this and for any ideas or suggestions! Here is a screenshot that illustrates the issueUntitled.jpg

What should I include in disavow file and/or reconsideration request?
My client got a manual penalty notice. Need to submit a disavow file and reconsideration request which is new territory for me. The task of contacting/disavowing 100's of sites to remove 1000's of links is a bit overwhelming. Answers to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Search console is showing 100's of hacked websites pointing to the site. Many of the incoming links showing in search console are already gone. Should I include in the disavow file or is the disavow file only for links that persist? I have read that Google does not actually read the #remarks in the disavow file. Since its manual penalty should I include them anyway since it's possible that a human could look it over? If anyone who has submitted a reconsideration request for unnatural links can comment on their use or non use of #remarks and the result that would be very helpful. You can tell that Google wants an effort to be made that the site owners are contacted. What is the best way to document that? In the reconsideration request?: The disavow file? or both.

Ranking for a brand term with "&" (and) in the name?
Hello Moz community. We have a company that rebranded their name to "Bar & Cocoa" with the URL https://barandcocoa.com/. It's been about 3 months, and the website has yet to show up organically anywhere within the first 50 results foer their brand terms. It seems that Google pretty much ignores the "&" or "and" word when typing in bar & cocoa, or bar and cocoa in search. You'd think with that with the exact domain name, it would at least move the needle a bit, but it has not helped. Even being in Denver, I'm getting results for a "Bar Cocoa" business located in Charlotte, NC, and the secondary pages that belong to that business, and then a bunch of other companies, products and irrelevant search results (like a parked domain)! Any suggestions or ideas, please help!

How does linkedin get grey microdata when searching a persons name?
If you google any persons name who has a linkedin profile and then locate that entry in the search engine results (linkedin profiles are usually first page for most people) you will see that they get microdata indexed which is basically the persons location and headline from their profile. Looking at their markup, i see location which makes sense as it is an hcard format, but I do not see any microformat data around the headline. Any ideas how they get this? wDQcGZY

What's the best way to deal with deleted .php files showing as 404s in WMT?
Disclaimer: I am not a developer During a recent site migration I have seen a bit of an increase in WMT of 404 errors on pages ending .php. Click on the link in WMT and it just shows as File Not Found - no 404 page. There are about 20 in total showing in webmaster tools and I want to advise the IT department what to do. What is the best way to deal with this for on-page best practice? Thanks

Proper naming convention when updating sitemaps
I have a semi-big site (500K pages) with lots of new pages being created. I also have a process that updates my sitemap with all of these pages automatically. I have 11 sitemap files and a sitemap index file. When I update my sitemaps and submit them to Google, should I keep the same names?

Changing Domain / Site Name - An SEO Nightmare?
My company will be changing its name and moving to a new domain in about a month. What can I do from an SEO perspective to get ready for the big move? Do I just need to 301 redirect all my URLs to their new corresponding pages? Thanks!

Duplicate internal links on page, any benefit to nofollow
Link spam is naturally a hot topic amongst SEO's, particularly post Penguin. While digging around forums etc, I watched a video blog from Matt Cutts posted a while ago that suggests that Google only pays attention to the first instance of a link on the page As most websites will have multiple instances of a links (header, footer and body text), is it beneficial to nofollow the additional instances of the link? Also as the first instance of a link will in most cases be within the header nav, does that then make the content link text critical or can good on page optimisation be pulled from the title attribute? I would appreciate the experiences and thoughts Mozzers thoughts on this thanks in advance!
