De-indexing and SSL question
-
Few days ago Google indexed hundreds of my directories by mistake (error with plugins/host), my traffic dropped as a consequence.
Anyway I fixed that and submitted a URL removal request. Now just waiting things to go back to normality.
Meantime I was supposed to move my website to HTTPS this week.
Question:
Should I wait until this indexing error has been fixed or I may as well go ahead with the SSL move?
-
Let me know if you can let me see the domain?
-
PS I agree it would be nice to hear from more people I am sure you will by tomorrow.
-
I respect your want to get this right
“A few days ago, Google indexed hundreds of my directories by mistake (error with plugins/host); my traffic dropped as a consequence.

in my opinion, you can see the change happen to the https URLs & you want to be sure that https will not let your unwanted directory back in Google's index.
I think unless you can show me your site better Search & replace will be more comfortable & faster.
Yes, I have used better search & replace many times; it’s a great tool.
Make sure you back up your site before you do a search & replace.

I think you should be able to see everything needed and more from this great how-to the person who made it is a friend & they don't just show you how to do this on Kinsta they show you how to use Apache & Nginx as well.
It covers everything you might want to think about managed wordpress hosting if this is something you don't feel comfortable doing.
https://kinsta.com/blog/http-to-https/
I would look at Pagely, Pantheon Servebolt & Kinsta.
If it helps, I am ranked in the top 10 or 11 for assisting people on Moz. Unless you only blocked the HTTP version of your directories, then you will have the same results with https.
- Would you allow me to see the domain?
- Who is your hosting company?
Respectfully,
Tom Zickell

Hi Tom,
yes I have WordPress, I have read a few guides online about it.for the search and replace part, I found a plugin called Better Search Replace: https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-in-wordpress/
the instructions in the search engine journal article do the search-replace manually. The plugin should be better, have you tried it?
Good question. In all honesty, I think it's safe to go forward with an HTTPS migration.
I am a bit worried. I asked this question to many people in many forums and nobody replies. Which makes me wonder if it's something really bad. It would be nice to have additional opinions.

A "URL removal request"
A simple move to https two different things that can be done at the same time.
if you have a certain set up please let me know I can give you better instructions on how to completely migrate over to HTTPS. Here are some of the basics below.

Search & Replace in Files
To begin, search for instances of your domain pointing to HTTP URLs of your site.
Use the regex for **“www” **and without “www” URL cases and search for
http:\/\/(www\.)?yourdomain\.com
always search and replace your database if you have one.
remember to implement redirects
NGINX
Add the following to your Nginx config.
<code class=" language-nginx">server { listen 80; server_name domain.com www.domain.com; return 301 https://domain.com$request_uri; }</code>
Apache
Add the following to your
.htaccess
file.<code class=" language-apacheconf">RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]</code>
6. Update your robots.txt File#
Update any hard-coded links or blocking rules you might have in your
robots.txt
that might still be pointing to HTTP directories or files- Update your robots.txt file
- Update your disavow file if you have one
- update Google search console
if you want a very quick easy way to implement HTTPS, redirects as well as certificates I recommend Cloudflare The free version should do it.

I hope this helps,
Tom

Site Not Being Indexed
Hey Everyone - I have a site that is being treated strangely by google (at least strange to me) The site has 24 pages in the sitemap - submitted to WMT'S over 30 days ago I've manually triggered google to crawl the homepage and all connecting links as well and submitted a couple individually. Google has been parked the indexing at 14 of the 24 pages. None of the unindexed URL's have Noindex or follow tags on them - they are clearly and easily linked to from other places on the site. The site is a brand new domain, has no manual penalty history and in my research has no reason to be considered spammy. 100% unique handwritten content I cannot figure out why google isn't indexing these pages. Has anyone encountered this before? Know any solutions? Thanks in advance.

Basic Redirection Question
I am doing a 301 Redirect from site ABC to site XYZ. I loaded the following .htaccess file by ftp to the ABC.com/ server: Redirect 301 / http://XYZ.com/ This was completed over 30 days ago, OSE is not showing any of the links and is failing to show that abc.com is redirected even though the MozBar shows a successful 301 http status code. Is this still just a waiting game or is it not advised to do a redirect this way for seo? PS: ahrefs is showing the redirect itself, however, it is not showing the links going to site ABC.com/ as passing to site XYZ.com/ . Any help is appreciated.

Google Indexing - what did I missed??
Hello, all SEOers~ I just renewed my web site about 3 weeks ago, and in order to preserve SEO values as much as possible, I did 301 redirect, XML Sitemap and so on for minimize the possible data losses. But the problem is that about week later from site renewal, my team some how made mistake and removed all 301 redirects. So now my old site URLs are all gone from Google Indexing and my new site is not getting any index from Google. My traffic and rankings are also gone....OMG I checked Google Webmaster Tool, but it didn't say any special message other than Google bot founds increase of 404 error which is obvious. Also I used "fetch as google bot" from webmaster tool to increase chance to index but it seems like not working much. I am re-doing 301 redirect within today, but I am not sure it means anything anymore. Any advise or opinion?? Thanks in advance~!

Why googlebot indexing one page, not the other?
Why googlebot indexing one page, not the other in the same conditions? In html sitemap, for example. We have 6 new pages with unique content. Googlebot immediately indexes only 2 pages, and then after sometime the remaining 4 pages. On what parameters the crawler decides to scan or not scan this page?

Index forum sites
Hi Moz Team, somehow the last question i raised a few days ago not only wasnt answered up until now, it was also completely deleted and the credit was not "refunded" - obviously there was some data loss involved with your restructuring. Can you check whether you still find the last question and answer it quickly? I need the answer 🙂 Here is one more question: I bought a website that has a huge forum, loads of pages with user generated content. Overall around 500.000 Threads with 9 Million comments. The complete forum is noindex/nofollow when i bought the site, now i am thinking about what is the best way to unleash the potential. The current system is vBulletin 3.6.10. a) Shall i first do an update of vbulletin to version 4 and use the vSEO tool to make the URLs clean, more user and search engine friendly before i switch to index/follow? b) would you recommend to have the forum in the folder structure or on a subdomain? As far as i know subdomain does take lesser strenght from the TLD, however, it is safer because the subdomain is seen as a separate entity from the regular TLD. Having it in he folder makes it easiert to pass strenght from the TLD to the forum, however, it puts my TLD at risk c) Would you release all forum sites at once or section by section? I think section by section looks rather unnatural not only to search engines but also to users, however, i am afraid of blasting more than a millionpages into the index at once. d) Would you index the first page of a threat or all pages of a threat? I fear duplicate content as the different pages of the threat contain different body content but the same Title and possibly the same h1. Looking forward to hear from you soon! Best Fabian
