Huge number of crawl anomalies and 404s - non- existent urls
-
Hi there,
Our site was redesigned at the end of January 2020. Since the new site was launched we have seen a big drop in impressions (50-60%) and also a big drop in total and organic traffic (again 50-60%) when compared to the old site.
I know in the current climate some businesses will see a drop in traffic, however we are a tech business and some of our core search terms have increased in search volume as a result of remote-working.
According to search console there are 82k urls excluded from coverage - the majority of these are classed as 'crawl anomaly' and there are 250+ 404's - almost all of the urls are non-existent, they have our root domain with a string of random characters on the end. Here are a couple of examples:
root.domain.com/96jumblestorebb42a1c2320800306682
root.domain.com/01sportsplazac9a3c52miz-63jth601
root.domain.com/39autoparts-agency26be7ff420582220
root.domain.com/05open-kitchenaf69a7a29510363
Is this a cause for concern? I'm thinking that all of these random fake urls could be preventing genuine pages from being indexed / or they could be having an impact on our search visibility. Can somebody advise please?
Thanks!

Unlikely, as long as they're returning 404 errors you should be OK. Maybe update your disavow file and you should be good to go!

Thanks for your reply.
I’m new to the business and I’ve found that that the old website had a spam attack, all of these fake urls are from the old pages (as they have 301s).
There are 82,000 crawl anomalies from these fake/spam URLs and around 200 404s. None of the fake /spam urls have been indexed. Could this be having a negative effect of search visibility/DA or rankings?
Thanks!

It's tough to say without seeing the site. Overall it's unlikely if you don't use that string anywhere. We usually see it more for broken relative URLs. Maybe a third party site is using that string.
-
Thanks for your reply, would broken urls from the internal linking structure explain the random characters? e.g. root.domain.com/96jumblestorebb42a1c2320800306682
We've never had any page content/urls relating to 'jumblestore'.
Thanks!

From what I can tell, this probably isn't the reasons for the drops. I'd go back and ensure that any URLs that changed are 301 redirecting to the correct destination URL. I'd also ensure that no pages that were associated with high volume keywords no longer exist.
For your issue, Google is likely finding some broken URLs, possibly from your internal linking structure. Perform a crawl of the site and see if you can find "Inlinks" to those broken pages. If so, you can work with dev to eliminate the issue.

URL has caps, but canonical does not. Now what?
Hi, Just started working with a site that has the occasional url with a capital, but then the url in the canonical as lower case. Neither, when entered in a browser, resolves to the other. It's a Shopify site. What do you think I should do?

Changing URLs
As of right now we are using yahoo small business, when creating a product you have to declare an id, when we created the site we were not aware that you will not be able to change the id but also the ID is being used as the URL. we have a couple thousand products in which we will need to update the URLs. What would the best way to be to fix this without losing much juice from our current pages. Also I was thinking that if we did them all in a couple weeks it would hurt us a lot, and the best course of action would be to do a slow roll out of the URL changes. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

My site is not being regularly crawled?
My site used to be crawled regularly, but not anymore. My pages aren't showing up in the index months after they've been up. I've added them to the sitemap and everything. I now have to submit them through webmaster tools to get them to index. And then they don't really rank? Before you go spouting off the standard SEO resolutions... Yes, I checked for crawl errors on Google Webmaster and no, there aren't any issues No, the pages are not noindex. These pages are index, follow No, the pages are not canonical No, the robots.txt does not block any of these pages No, there is nothing funky going on in my .htaccess. The pages load fine No, I don't have any URL parameters set What else would be interfereing? Here is one of the URLs that wasn't crawled for over a month: http://www.howlatthemoon.com/locations/location-st-louis

Single URL not indexed
Hi everyone! Some days ago, I noticed that one of our URLs (http://www.access.de/karriereplanung/webinare) is no longer in the Google index. We never had any form of penalty, link warning etc. Our traffic by Google is constantly growing every month. This single page does not have an external link pointing to it - only internal links. The page has been indexed all the time. The HTTP status code is 200, there is no noindex or something in the code. I submitted the URL on GWMT to let Google send it to the index. It was crawled successfully by Google, sent to the index 5 days ago - nothing happened, still not indexed. Do you have any suggestions why this page is no longer indexed? It is well linked internally and one click away from the home page. There is still the PR of 5 showing, I always thought that pages with PR are indexed.......

What to do with extremely high number of URLs on your site?
Here is the situation: The site has tons of business and personal profiles, the information needed to be categorized as such directories were created in an attempt to keep the URL structure clean - so for example: www.abc.com/product/um/name-here/city-name/state/lastname:3458765 Each profile has a unique ID#, and for some reason there needed to be a category for a user in this case /um/ stands for user name. Webmaster tool steps to resolve state to use an rel=canonical which can be done for that directory /um/ but I am concerned about the bot not being able to find the other pages beyond that directory, like the profile name, city, state associated. So I guess my ultimate question is if I use rel=canonical will the rest of the content not get crawled or indexed as well?

Does this page crawl well?
I just put up a page that uses an image map to illustrate a national currency note. http://www.antiquebanknotes.com/NationalCurrency/National-Bank-Note-Information.aspx My goal with this page is get results for National Bank Note. But I know image maps are wierd creatures and not good for linking. My question is, will Google index my tooltips and find this page useful and therefore worthy? I think the content is useful for my users but I just don't know if the implementation will work well. This screen will eventually have 5 or 6 notes on it and I don't want to do it the concensus is negative... Thanks for any advice.

Products with discrete URLs for each color
here is the issue. i have an ecommerce site that on a category page, shows each individual color for each product sold. and there is a distinct URL for each color. each product page shares the same content, with the only potentially differentiating factor being customer reviews (not nearly enough of these to differentiate anything). so we have URLs like: www.domain.com/product-green www.domain.com/product-yellow www.domain.com/product-red and so on. i am looking for a way to consolidate these URL while still showing all colors on the category page. the first solution i am considering is using the hash tag. so we would create www.domain.com/product#green, www.domain.com/product#yellow, www.domain.com/product#red. if possible, i would set the canonical tag as www.domain.com/product. the second solution would be to use the canonical tag and keep the URLs as is. the issue i see here is that we would need to create www.domain.com/product and show that page somewhere. www.domain.com/product would the URL that the above color URLs would canonicalize to. what would be the preferred solution? or is there something else?
