No Follow & Rel Canon for Product Filters
-
Our site uses Canonicals to address duplicate content issues with product/facet filtering.
example: www.mysite.com/product?color=blue
Relcanon= www.mysite.com/product
However, our site is also using no follow for all of the "filters" on a page (so all ?color=, etc. links are no follow). What is the benefit of utilizing the no follow on the filters if we have the rel canon in place?
Is this an effort to save crawl budget? Are we giving up possible SEO juice by having the no follow and not having the crawler get to the canonical tag and subsequently reference the main page?
Is this just something we just forget about? I hope we're not giving up SEO juice by

Thanks, Chris.
We should have no external links pointing to the URLs with the additional product parameters.
Are we losing any SEO juice for our internal pages, with the internal links with the additional parameters attached being no follow.
For example.
For this page: https://www.remke.com/aluminum-strain-relief-cord-grips/
All of the internal links to the "filtered" products/options are marked no follow. ex: https://www.remke.com/aluminum-strain-relief-cord-grips/?cordgriptype=45%20Degree (no follow when linked from the facet filtering on the lefthand side of the site).
But the page itself: https://www.remke.com/aluminum-strain-relief-cord-grips/?cordgriptype=45%20Degree has a canonical pointing back to https://www.remke.com/aluminum-strain-relief-cord-grips/.
Are we losing any SEO juice from the internal traffic utilizing the filters or is it a moot point and we should just leave it how it is?
Thanks again for the help.

Maybe there were external links pointing filter pages, so having a canonical tags on them pushed the juice to the canonical page? Have you looked to see if you have backlinks pointing to those pages? Even if there currently are not, it seems it could happen. So, I'd say it's better to keep both.

Hi, Chris
Yes, we are using no follow on the links pointing to "?color=" pages. The pages themselves are using rel canon pointing back to the main URL without the "?color=".

"site is also using no follow for all of the "filters" on a page (so all ?color=, etc. links are no follow)."
For clarification, do you mean you're using nofollows on links pointing to "?color=" pages or links on/from "?color=" pages?

Https & http
I have my website (HTTP://thespacecollective.com) marked on Google Webmaster Tools as being the primary domain, as opposed to https. But should all of my on page links be http? For instance, if I click the Home button on my home page it will take the user to http, but if you type in the domain name in the address bar it will take you to https. Could this be causing me problems for SEO?

Rel="canonical"
Hello guys, By fixing the duplicate meta description issues of my site I noticed something a bit weird.The pages are product pages and the product on each one of them is the same and the only difference is the length of the product. On each page there is a canonical tag, and the link within the tag points to the same page. www.example.com/Product/example/2001 <rel="canonical" href="www.example.com/Product/example/2001"></rel="canonical"> This happens on every other page. I read twice and I think I will do it again the post on GWT and I think that is wrong as it should point to a different url, which is www.example.com/ProductGroup/example/ which is the the page where all the product are grouped together. Cheers

Sharepoint CMS and rel= cannonical
I have a client that uses Sharepoint as their CMS and they are having a tough time getting cannonical tags to work on the website without breaking other items. Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you have any resources that could help? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Use webmaster tools "change of address" when doing rel=canonical
We are doing a "soft migration" of a website. (Actually it is a merger of two websites). We are doing cross site rel=canonical tags instead of 301's for the first 60-90 days. These have been done on a page by page basis for an entire site. Google states that a "change of address" should be done in webmaster tools for a site migration with 301's. Should this also be done when we are doing this soft move?

Rel=cannonical + 301 redirect
Hi All I am currently working on a DotNetNuke site. I have enabled friendly URL's which have changed the url structure from the default setting of TabId=x to whatever the page name is set as. I will use the following page as an example - www.notarealdomain./graphicdesign.aspx Now I would like to know if it would be worth my time to change this to "/graphic-design.aspx through the use of a 301 redirect and/or a rel=can. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Products with discrete URLs for each color
here is the issue. i have an ecommerce site that on a category page, shows each individual color for each product sold. and there is a distinct URL for each color. each product page shares the same content, with the only potentially differentiating factor being customer reviews (not nearly enough of these to differentiate anything). so we have URLs like: www.domain.com/product-green www.domain.com/product-yellow www.domain.com/product-red and so on. i am looking for a way to consolidate these URL while still showing all colors on the category page. the first solution i am considering is using the hash tag. so we would create www.domain.com/product#green, www.domain.com/product#yellow, www.domain.com/product#red. if possible, i would set the canonical tag as www.domain.com/product. the second solution would be to use the canonical tag and keep the URLs as is. the issue i see here is that we would need to create www.domain.com/product and show that page somewhere. www.domain.com/product would the URL that the above color URLs would canonicalize to. what would be the preferred solution? or is there something else?

Blank Canonical URL
So my devs have the canonical URL loaded up on pages automatically, and in most cases this gets done correctly. However we ran across a bug that left some of these blank like so: Does anyone know what effect that would have? I am trying to provide a priority for this so I can say "FIX IT NOW" or "Fix it after the other 'FIX IT NOW' type of items". Let me know if you have any ideas. I just want to be sure I am not telling google that all of these pages are like the home page. Thanks!

Canonical tags and internal Google search
Quick question: I want some pages that will have canonical tags, to show up in internal results for a Google site search that's built into the site. I'm not finished with the site, but is it correct to assume that pages with canonical will NOT show up in internal site search results, when powered by Google?
