Are the latest Ranking Reports counting the new large format site links as positions?
-
Received my weekly ranking report this morning and noticed a specific keyword that I've been ranking in the 3rd or 4th spot has dropped a significant amount of positions. I tested the results myself and it appears the site links of the manufacturer are being counted as positions? My keyword has me in the 3rd position (although it is much lower on the physical page now because of the new format).
I'm really wondering how this will affect organic listings going forward - this new format could be a game changer.

Hey all!
So, we recently released a fix for our tools that solves this issue of counting those site links towards the top 10. If you do see this happening in your rankings in SEOmoz, though, feel free to email us at help@seomoz.org any time. Thanks again for the heads up Jamie!

Aaron,
If you could include me in on the answer - I'd appreciate it also. I just noticed this on some of my keywords for sites that aren't big brand names, but have the keyword in their URL. Pushed me down 5 or 6 spots on the first page.

Aaron,
Please also let us know - via our pro address or here, whichever.

Hey Jamie,
This is an interesting issue! I'm not sure if it's how we want to be calculating rankings, so I'm going to open up a customer service request about this and try to look into it ASAP. Thanks for letting us know! I'll get back to you over email at your PRO email address. Talk to you then!

Perhaps.. but I think this is really connected to being 'good for the user' - as cliche as it sounds. If Google sees clickstream abnormally 'high' for position 1 for brand terms, then they are sure this is what the user wants.. so why not expand those site-links to allow for better landing pages for the user. When searching for 'Gap' why not already have the options for 'mens', 'womens', 'baby', etc. And when searching for 'nordstroms shoes' - why not already have the option for 'boots', 'sandals', 'pumps', etc.
Personally I think its a good thing for people to find what they want faster.
I'd bet 95% of people would not be happy landing on an affiliate site when they meant to find the brand site..

I think this is also Google's way of saying, "Hey, you want to compete with brand terms and be relevant on the SERP, you need to be using Adwords." Going to pay really close attention to my first page organic visits over the next few weeks and see how getting pushed down further on the page affects our traffic.
-
Totally agree with you Jamie regarding it being a game changer. Branded terms where competitors were trying to rank organically are now seriously pushed down due to jumbo sitelinks. For local businesses, Google is also embeddeding local place page snippets - it ends up taking up half of the SERP real estate!
I imagine it will get harder for SERP trackers to scrape - needing to differentiate between large sitelinks and actual organic listings.

Huge difference between GSC ranking and browser ranking for certain keywords: How to proceed?
Hi, There is a huge ranking difference between the GSC and browser for our primary keyword. As per GSC, our ranking is around 15 and when checking on the multiple different incognito browsers it's around 50. How to handle this? Which is the accurate one? Product expert from Google forums claim that what I see on browsers are the personalized results; but I tried on different browsers with different connections. Thanks

Do keyword target landing pages increase rankings?
Let's say we create landing pages for targeted keywords in our niche. So like we have landing pages optimised for 80% of the top keywords with decent search volume. If these pages started ranking at first page or around; will this scenario improves the ranking of website? Right now, only few of our top pages are ranking good. Planning to create more of such.

W3C Validation: How Important is This to Ranking
Hi, I'm currently working with a developer who is trying to tell me that validation errors and warnings are of little to no importance in a website's SERP. In the past, whenever I've had a site that was experiencing problems ranking for a keyword terms, this was one of the first places we'd look. Is this still a relatively important component in getting a site to rank?

Decent rankings in Google, nothing in Bing and Yahoo
Hi there, I'm in the process of SEOing a site in a very competitive sector, the short term loans market. The URL for the site is http://www.piggy-bank.co.uk. I've managed to get a fair bit of success in Google for some very competitive keywords like short term loans, short term lender etc but in Bing and Yahoo I'm having no luck at all, with only 2 visits in the past month and no decent rankings!! I think I'm doing everything right, with regular new content on the site, decent technical SEO, semantic site structure, regular site map upload, a 10 year old domain, holistic link building through guest blogging etc, but still no luck at all. Looking at the webmaster tools in Bing, 95% of the URLs are indexed, but I'm getting such a low impression count, and obviously, an even lower click through. Am I missing something really obvious? Does anyone have any suggestions to improve my Bing and Yahoo rankings? I've worked on 100s of other sites and Yahoo and Bing tend to be the easy win to make the client happy 😉 Thanks in advance for your help. Dan

Too Many On-Page Links
After running a site analysis on here it has come up and said that I have a lot o pages with too many on page links and that this might be why the site is being penalized. Thing is I am not sure how to remedy this as one page that says it has 116 links is this one : http://www.whosjack.org/10-films-with-some-crazy-bitches/ Although there is only one link in the body Then again our home page has 165 http://www.whosjack.org which again it says is too many. The thing is is that surely it doesn't count on links all over the page as other wise every news homepage would be penalised? For example what would happen here on this home page? : http://www.dazeddigital.com/ Can anyone help me see what I am missing? Are there possible hidden links anywhere I should be looking for etc? Thanks

Google spitting out old data as new alerts
Am I just unlucky or are others seeing this too? I have several google alerts. For the past 6 months, google keeps sending crap along with good stuff. its a bit like their search results. There are three types of Alerts they send that I'm not impressed with. 1. Alerts that are from unintelligible splogs that take real news stories and rewrite them with unintelligible garbage that makes no sense at all. Sometimes, they serve up new alerts from the same splogs I saw several months ago, that I felt sure they would have zapped by now. 2. Old stories, that have been around for months. I just received one that was from January, from TechDirt, a big site that must get a huge amount of attention from google. 3. Irrelevant stories because they love to show how smart they are by splitting my alert keyword text into multiple words, but it gives useless results. This is the kind of stuff that crappy search engines like AltaVista used to do. Is google reverting to the childhood of search with all these changes?

Do you believe CTR affects rankings
As you know, Google tracks CTR on keywords for your website visible through google Webmaster Tools. How much if at all do you believe this affects your rankings on the tracked keywords?
