Aside from creative link bait, what's a solid link building strategy involve?
-
All things considered, directories, blogs, articles, press releases, forums, social profiles, student discount pages, etc, what do you consider to be a strong, phased, link building strategy? I'm talking beyond natural/organic link bait, since many larger accounts will not allow you to add content to their website or take 6 months to approve a content strategy.
I've got my own list, but would love to hear what the community considers to be a strong, structured, timeline-based strategy for link building.

Don't forget to monitor links you earn "naturally" and request better anchor text. That can do wonders.

This is what I do for my clients and my own website:
-Forum profiles on high PR sites. Start with 100.
-Submit to all local directories recommended by David Mihm.
-Optimize Google Places to be in accordance with David Mihm and above.
-Do a slow-drip to directories.
-Do-follow social bookmarks
-Twitter/FB/LinkedIn/YouTube profiles that are active.
By that time, rankings appear and you tweak from there. I use that as a starting point.

Steven, this is going to be very non scientific with, it depends on how I feel. Some days I am just lazy and gather some directories, others I work at finding forums and blogs. It is just a matter on the day.
I work heavier on Facebook as that has a direct audience for me. If I get a no-follow, I only do so on relevant sites.

Thanks - I love Scott's article and it does list a few tools and a few types of links, and even lists a few destinations to acquire them. However, I don't see an actual strategy, phases, quantities, or an exclusive list of link building tactics one might find after a few dozen Advanced Link Building Strategies sessions at SES/SMX/etc. Do you have a boilderplate one you build off of?

Hi Richard,
All things considered, including juice, traffic and anchor text. Do you have a strategy with channels and phases?
-
Steven, It depends on what you want that link to do really.
Great anchor text can be had from directories or guest blogging that allow you to name your anchor.
Link juice can be hand from linking properly from your LinkedIn page (using site name of Blog or Personal to pass juice and not company)
Social profiles will be no-followed, but can generate traffic such as Facebook and Twitter.
Are you going for juice, traffic, anchor text? Answering that question will determine which link strategy is best.

Hey Steven: Rather than try to tackle this by myself, I'm going to bring in some heavy hitters. Since you are a Pro member, you have free access to the Pro guides, but unfortunately I can't seem to find the Pro Guide to Link Building on the SEOmoz site at the moment to be able to give you a link.
I can however share an absolutely awesme YOUmoz post from by Scott.MClay that got promoted to the main blog:

Why is my website not ranking for it's brand name in SERPs but has been indexed by Google?
The website https://christchurch.crowneplaza.com has been live for a couple of months but is not being found in Google search results - even when searching for it's own brand name 'crowne plaza christchurch.' Google has indexed the site - but we are still not showing - https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fchristchurch.crowneplaza.com&rlz=1C1NHXL_enNZ735NZ735&oq=site%3A&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j69i58j69i59l2j69i65.896j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Any ideas as to why? I think it may be because their are two versions of the site, http and https, both with their own rel=canonical tags. Could this be the cause? Any help much appreciated.

What was your experience with changing site url's?
I work with a company that is about to move to a new platform. Because the category and page structure is different every almost every url but the home page will need to be 301 redirected. I know how to do this and am pretty sure I will find and fix 99% ahead of time and not have too many 404's showing up in webmaster tools to clean up. My question is has anyone who is reading this post had to do this before and what was your experience with organic traffic after you made the switch. I am predicting that even if I successfully redirected 100% of the url's there would be some loss for a couple of months just due to the fact that we are making a major change. My bosses are asking if there will be any loss and I need to tell them what to expect.

Should I disallow via robots.txt for my sub folder country TLD's?
Hello, My website is in default English and Spanish as a sub folder TLD. Because of my Joomla platform, Google is listing hundreds of soft 404 links of French, Chinese, German etc. sub TLD's. Again, i never created these country sub folder url's, but Google is crawling them. Is it best to just "Disallow" these sub folder TLD's like the example below, then "mark as fixed" in my crawl errors section in Google Webmaster tools?: User-agent: * Disallow: /de/ Disallow: /fr/ Disallow: /cn/ Thank you, Shawn

Mystery 404's
I have a large number of 404's that all have a similar structure: www.kempruge.com/example/kemprugelaw. kemprugelaw keeps getting stuck on the end of url's. While I created www.kempruge.com/example/ I never created the www.kempruge.com/example/kemprugelaw page or edited permalinks to have kemprugelaw at the end of the url. Any idea how this happens? And what I can do to make it stop? Thanks, Ruben

.GOV Link - same impact on my site's rankings whether link to home or Gov related category?
I own a job site and I am about to get a link from a .GOV. My site has a category called "State Jobs". Should I ask the ".Gov" to link to my homepage or to the state job page and use the anchor text "State Jobs". I understand "State Jobs" page would get a big kick by that being the anchor text and linking to that specific page, but the question I have is this: for my site as a whole (homepage and various categories) would they get around the same "push up" whether the linking is to 1) my homepage with anchor text being my site's name or 2) to the state job specific page and in this case the anchor text would be "State Jobs"? thank you

What's the best .NET blog solution?
I asked our developers to implement a WordPress blog on our site and they feel that the technology stack that is required to support WP will interfere with a number of different .NET production applications on that server. I can't justify another server just because of a blog either. They want me to find a .NET blog solution. The only thing that looks decent out there is dotnetblogengine.net. Has anyone had any experience with this tool or any others like it? Thanks, Alex

Link Request Email on Site`s Link Pages
Hello I have assembled a list of web-sites that have "Links" section that has a list of persons` favorite tools. Those pages have a link to my competitor. I know my tool is just as good if not better and want to request a link. I`m thinking of sending an email asking for a link and offering a small amount of money for it. Questions: A) How much should I offer? Should I offer anything at all B) Is there an email style that someone can suggest that has been tested and proven to work for this type of situtation?
