New URL Strucutre
-
Hello all!
I'm new to SeoMoz and would like to introduce myself and say thanks for all of the great content. This is definitely the premium website I have been looking for.
My question is regarding a new URL structure that will be implemented with our website redesign. We are looking to make our URL's more user and SEO friendly. We will be using 301 redirects to reroute our existing structure when the site goes live.
Background
I work in a company that retails automotive tires. I would consider class (performance, off-road, highway, etc.) to be the most important category, but based on our analytics we receive much more traffic from brand terms. This is most likely because our customers are not educated on specific tire classes and generally do head term searches or search by brand / product name. Ultimately the will have to buy from a certain class based on driving habits.Link and URL Structure
(Parameters)- The model page includes links to individual tire size specific pages.
- We are using the model page as our primary SEO page because the only difference from the 5 - 60 tire size specific pages per model will be the tire size itself. This means that all of the remaining content will be duplicated multiple times over.
- All links to the tire size specific page from the model page will have a rel="nofollow" attribute attached to it.
- All tire size specific pages will have a rel="canonical" tag pointing back to the model page
Out of the following structures, which would you consider to be the best format:
1. http://www.company.com/category/brand/model
or
2. http://www.company.com/brand/category/model
or
3. http://www.company.com/tires/category/modelWe will append the specific tire-size to the URL on the item specific pages.
Any other options or strategies will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for the fast response guys!
The "By Brand" path is basically for SEO purposes only. 90% of our visitors use one of two forms to find their tire size.
The first form is a vehicle search which breaks down to the specific tire size and the minimum speed rating requirements. This form accounts for 80% of our form completions.
The second form is by the specific tire size.
When a visitor completes one of these forms, they are only given results that link to the specific item pages that match their vehicle.
We actually do not want people using the "by brand / category" method to find their products as this will almost always lead them down an empty path. Tires must match an exact size for that vehicle.
One the other hand, we do want to show up in search results for these products. Our current results bring us quite a bit of traffic. This method is just to get them into the website. We will have a "Do these tires match my vehicle" form on the this page. If they do not, we will take them to a page explaining why not and provide them with alternate, matching results. By Brand is great for browsing but at the end of the day the tire must be a fit for the vehicle.
Ultimately the end focus of the website will be for them to search by vehicle.
An example of an item level URL (based on Roberts reply) would be:
brand category model item (tire size)
www.company.com/Michelin/Performance/Primacy-MXV4/2055516This same page would be duplicated 40+ times for each tire size available, with links to these item pages originating from the model page:
www.company.com/Michelin/Performance/Primacy-MXV4/Would the 40+ individual item pages leading from the model page produce duplicate content issues? These pages will contain the exact same content including our features and benefits and user reviews.
The path of "by brand" from the home page would look as follows:
Home -> Michelin -> Primacy MXV4 - > 205/55R16
or
Home -> Michelin -> Performance -> Primacy MXV4 - > 205/55R16
Whichever one would be deemed better.I just want to make sure I get it right the first time.
Thanks for the responses!

When looking at what people search on, besides tire or discount tires, the brands are right up there. Given that most recommend a structure of Category/sub category/product I would suggest: company.com/Michelin/all-terrain/60,000-mile or the same with 60,000-mile replaced with heavy duty or some other product descriptor. Here I am assuming all-terrain would be a model. (My guess is that all companies use their own independent model names and unless someone knows that model they would not necessarily search on it). An example would be a Michelin Primacy MXV4.....how many people search on that model??? Compared to how many search for automobile, light truck, off road, etc. I want to hit what the majority are searching on.
You said you are using the model page (again, Michelin Primacy? or something like All-Terrain?) as the primary SEO page and I am not sure about what you mean. Based on how people seem to search for tires, I would think having the Tire Brands optimized and then optimizing the model would be best (Frankly, short of the tire size links, I don't see a reason to not fully optimize any page - that way they are all working for you).
Another item you did not mention was the ability of the shopper to look up their auto, year, model, etc. and find the tire for their vehicle. Are you including that functionality on the homepage? I think most would like that as it is easier than trying to go figure out what type tire they have.
You said you retail tires so I am assuming you have a retail location (if you are also ECommerce, insure that your CMS will adjust for dynamic urls to search engine friendly like you are describing here). If you have retail locations insure that you have optimized for Google Places, etc.
With this, a final consideration for me (and I am not a subject matter expert in tire purchase habits) would be to be sure I was mobile compatible especially if I was retail.
Hope this helps, got any good deals on Goodyear P285 70 R17's..

I would structure the URLs in how the users are going to be navigating your site. How will they GET to the specified page?
Homepage>click
Category>click
Brand>click
Model ?
Is yes, than your first option is the best choice.
The user should be able to look at the URL and deduce the hierarchy of the site from the "folder" structure (even though those folders may be virtual)
Hope this help!

Googlebot Reports All URLs as Unreachable
Webmaster Tools is reporting that all of our site's URLs - located www.zuken.com - are "unreachable." The URLs display correctly in all browsers. We recently switched hosting providers, but they assure us there is no security setting that would be causing this issue. Any ideas? Is this a glitch with Webmaster Tools?

How can I fix New 4XX Issue on Site Crawl?
Hi all, My recent site crawl shows 27 4xx issues on this website http://www.rrbusinessconsultants.com/ All of them are for 'posts' on this wordpress website. Here is an example of the issue: http://www.rrbusinessconsultants.com/rr-business-consultants-on-the-rise-of-glassdoor-and-how-companies-are-coping/void(null) The blog page seems to be creating links ending in void(null) which are defaulting to 404 pages. I cannot see the links on the site so cannot see how to remove them. Can anyone provide any insight into how to correct his issue? Many thanks in advance.

Manufacturer, New Direct-to-Consumer Site (Separate Site, or Sub-Domain?)
Hi All! Working with an established manufacturer, been around for many years, it's an internationally known brand, and their products are sold by thousands on distributors. They recently started a new website (separate from their old established B2B manufacturer site) which will be used to sell direct to customer. The new site is great, with a nice responsive design, clean look, flexible, etc. The problem is, it's a new site with low Domain Authority. The manufacturer's B2B site has been around a while, very high Domain Authority. So, I'd like to be able to harness all the link equity they've build instead of trying to optimize a brand new site. The problem with this old established site is that it IS in fact old. The design is terrible, it's not responsive, old code, bad look and feel, etc. We could incorporate the new B2C site (which has its own CMS) into a sub-domain, like store.site.com. But, I'd worry that site.com's crapiness will limit growth potential for the new pages at store.site.com. Same issue were we to add the new site into a sub-folder, like site.com/store/. On the other side, we could just keep the new site, with it's own domain, sitestore.com, and have product pages and/or category pages from the manufacturer's B2B site link to the relevant pages on the new B2C site. Thanks!

New To SEO Management, I just want to double check that my idea will work.
I am new to SEO management. I had a 3 month SEO copy writing internship and a 5 month SEO temp job. In both I mostly wrote copy, but I've been teaching myself SEO on the side, I became Google certified. I ended up getting a telemarketing job and somehow the conversation of SEO came up and I winded up managing their SEO for 12 dollars an hour. They say that every lead generated from the website that turns into a sale will be worth 10 dollars and if and when the sales exceed my paycheck I will starting making commission so long as it stays above my hourly. SEO is very fun and this is like my dream job. They are leaving the planning 100% up to me and I want to make sure that what I am doing will work. My plan is as follows: Part 1: Page Authority via backlinks and social media We are health care brokers and my boss, the owner has a lot of contact. He is talking with large unions like, "The Teamsters," and large company retirment groups like, "Blue flame," which is apparently in some way connected to DTE or GE. Long story short, I am trying to get him to convince them to give us a back link to our main page. He also has a ton of clients that own companies. This is good because they may be persuaded to give us backlinks too. In addition, the tech guy thinks he can implement something where we can get a google +1, facebooks likes/shares, twitter likes and shares and pintrest pin it's that would be a part of an email that we send to people within the list of 12,000 clients. From what I can see, from the client base and the people we are working with we should be able to raise the page authority substantially despite the fact that the site is only a few months old and is not yet out of the sand box. I have been slowly picking off each error with SEO MOZ's website crawling. Part 2: Making a Insurance Jargon Dictionary Guide For The Tri-purpose of gathering traffic, proving our professionalism and helping people understand semi-complex insurance jargon. I could build these 2-3 keywords would be addressed per page and they would be defined in a way to help people looking for terms understand them, while simultaneously netting a strong keyword density and a strong page. I think as far as I can tell there are no issues. Part 3: The dictionary pages will pull in new traffic and the home page will receive links and distribute link juice to the sub-pages. This subpages will guide traffic back to the main page with no-follow links to direct people from the unique termed landing pages to the home page for insurance processing. As far as I can tell my logic is solid and on paper this should work. Am I missing anything (like key details, flaws in my plan)?

How to find internal pages linking to a URL?
Hey, I had an issue where a client found a bad link on their site then I went to fix it and couldn't figure out where on earth it was. I tried using different software which would find the link, but not tell me where it was linked from. I asked for some help from someone in my office and they found it in about 15 seconds. Their strategy was "think like a client - just click everywhere". Is there a way to quickly find what URLs are pointing to a specific URL? Cheers

Keywords in the page url for best SEO
Hello all, I am working in the keywors structure of a web and I have the following doubt: If I want to target these keywords: great food madrid and my website is: http://www.madridlive.com I do not know if I should keep either: OPTION 1: page url: www.madridlive.com/great-food-madrid or OPTION 2: page url www.madridlive.com/great-food I do not know if the search engines "understands" madrid in "madridlive", therefore I can avoid the "madrid" keyword, dicarding option 1 and going for option 2. Additionally I avoid duplication of the madrid keyword that can be seen as redundancy and also have a shorter page url. Thank you very much and sorry for such a question but I am new in this SEO field...just the excellent SEOMOZ's SEO Guide for beginners! Best regards, Antonio

How to serve a Mobile & Full Site using one URL?
Hello, Does anyone know of any resources or tutorials that outline how to serve a smartphone-formatted website using the same URL as the full site? I know that one solution is using media-queries to serve a seperate CSS stylesheet, but you still have the full HTML source code. In other words, I might want to serve a smartphone & desktop user different content, but under one URL. WP Touch (Wordpress Plugin) is a perfect example of what I mean, but how is it technically achieved? It serves two different sets of HTML for smartphone & full, but using one URL http://www.bravenewcode.com/store/plugins/wptouch-pro/
