Segmenting traffic from referring sites in GA
-
Most of our traffic is from Referring sites, and in referring sites, job sites are sending most of the traffic. How can we segment traffic from job sites. There are about 40 such sites. We would like to receive a report which shows traffic excluding from these job sites.
-
Hi, I have just read the Seomoz blog article about regular expressions: it contains a very helpful tip for using Advanced Segments:
"You could also use Advanced Segments to create a social media segment - select source and set the condition to matches Regular Expression. Your value should be something like facebook|twitter|youtube|digg etc."
Just exchange facebook|twitter|youtube|digg for parts of the URL you want to exclude, and that's it.
Here is the URL of the blog: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/an-seos-guide-to-regex

No, if you include (i.e. say "does not contain") " jobs", this will only exclude jobsearch.naukri.com. In this example, you could include "naukri" or "naukri.com". However, this will only work if you do not get traffic from other pages containing naukri, which are not job related.

These are the 2 sites sending maximum traffic jobsearch.naukri.com firstnaukri.com My question is if i include just "jobs", would this exclude traffic from both these sources

Thanks Manischa. I will do as told and will post the outcome of my effort here

Hi Atul,
You can do this with advanced segments in GA.
Firstly, if you do not have it already, assemble a list of the job sites that you want to exclude.
The most important thing is to get a list of up to 10 words that together cover all of the URLs to be excluded. Look for similar patterns in their URLs (e.g., some of them might have the word "job" in their URL, others "recruitment"). I believe the limit of different variables for one advanced segment is around 10 (not sure about the number though, but 10 is at least possible), that is why you cannot just add all 40 URLs to the segment. However, the words should be descriptive enough so they are not included in other referrers to your site.
Then go to GA: Create a new advanced segment, from the Dimensions, take source (under Traffic Sources), set it to "Does not contain" and add the first of your words. Then add an Or Statement, and put in the next word. And so on. When you use this Advanced Segment, you will not see the job referrers anymore.

Direct / (none) Spam Traffic Help
In July 2015, we experienced an over 1,000% increase in traffic and it has remained like that ever since. It's all spam traffic and I have no clue how to get rid of it. I added in your typical .htaccess blocks from known culprits with little to no effect. Read up on Ghost traffic and applied filters to no effect. The spam is completely distributed as far as I can tell both geographically as well as by network providers. Where once we had pretty decent bounce rates of around 50%, now, since all my Analytics data is meaningless - it's around 90%. I could apply a filter but beyond my GA account providing no insights, I'm also concerned about the increased use of server resources. I'd ideally like to stop the traffic completely. The only distinguishing feature of the traffic that I have been able to determine is browser size. Comparing June 2015 to July 2015 we saw the following: Browser size visits: 620 x 460 = 6,828 vs 0, 610 x 450 = 175 vs 0, 1330 x 630 = 71 vs 1, 1890 x 940 = 67 vs 0, 780 x 580 = 58 v 5. Other than that, I can find no unifying theme to the traffic beyond being traffic hitting our homepage and having no medium. Nothing special that I am aware of happened in July. We didn't do any sort of...really anything. We did have our network compromised by ransomware in the beginning of June, which we promptly ignored and restored backups - at no point did we try to contact the criminals, but I am doubtful there is any connection considering that our website is remotely hosted. If anyone has any suggestions or has seen anything like this before, please let me know. spam-traffic.jpg

One big site for a loose theme or multiple sites for each specific theme?
Hi, Our company produces content related to one loose overall theme. Within that we write content and sell products on three specific sub-themes. Some of our customers cross over and have an interest in two or all three themes and others are only interested in one. At present we have one site covering reviews of products relating to all three sub-themes... ....and three other sites offering how-to guides and tutorials dedicated to each sub-theme. We do not have a lot of time to commit to SEO and so we are considering merging the content we have on all three subjects into the one site covering them all. Each of these sub-themes could have websites in their own right and my worry is that it will be harder to rank for these subject specific terms if the content is not on a site dedicated to that subject. But of course if they were all together then any links we build will be consolidated into one big site. Does anyone have any experience of this or have any advice on what the best thing to do would be? Thanks for your help!

Large Drop in Direct Traffic
We recently experienced a large drop in direct traffic. Search and referral traffic remained steady but direct traffic dropped by over half. I'm having trouble pinpointing what would have caused this drop. Any ideas or suggestions for investigating the cause in a drop of direct traffic?

How to create an advanced segmentation for Google+?
Hey Mozzers, I have a question regarding Google Analytics. The problem: I have created advanced segments for Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They all work fine... Now I am trying to create something similar for Google+ (since soon we are launching a campaign for it and I want to be able to check the evolution fast and effective). My advanced segments look like: Include -> Source -> Matching RegExp -> (Facebook|Youtube|Twitter) How should the Google+ be inserted into the group? I know this question might be easy for some advanced Analytics users but I am stuck at this point. Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance! Istvan
