This Guy Is Turning SEO Upside Down
-
Hi,
Everything my competitor does goes against everything I have learned about SEO so far. For starters:
-
he registered a brand NEW domain and within a space of **4 months and ** has a top ranking for one of the most competitive search terms on Google.
-
he uses scraped content
-
the navigation is almost non-existent.
-
his backlinks seem dodgy. 1-page sites with content that doesn not relate. Bunch of links to other websites too
And yet his site stats are as follows:
-
Domain Authority: 72
-
MozRank: 4.63 MozTrust: 4.72
-
Linking Root Domains: 1725
On further investigation I discoverd that he owns a SEO company and that they in fact have achieved a #1 rank in various niches such as life insurance, car insurance, mortgage etc.
On his SEO site he actually promises a #1 ranking in less than 4 months. The sample sites he lists on there all achieved #1 over a 4 month period...of course he owns most of these domains and then just sells the leads...
So, my question is how on earth does he do it? Do you have any ideas

I've seen some other South African sites like this that have ranked really well. In fact our brand name is a big term is South Africa, hence the reason I noticed the odd .za site appearing in the rankings. I'm not sure if the algorithm is different for the area and that's why it works??
To be completely honest with you, what you competitor has done may not be sustainable in the long term, but you can see he's got some easy links from 'high ranking pages'. I won't endorse it and sooner or later he may get a penalty, but he does seem to have found some easy wins for the moment at least!!
-
Some analysis for this site:
-
any site will receive a significant boost for the exact domain name match phrase. This site owner is using a South African ccTLD, org.za for his domain name. He added "lifeinsurance" as the domain name which will earn him a boost in rankings for that term.
-
His home page is 100% targeted to the "life insurance" phrase. His page title, H1 tag, H2 tag, and alt text all use the term.
-
the content uses the term enough to be very relevant for the phrase.
-
the site has 45 internal followed links, 0 external links. The links are highly efficient. While it is true the site does not offer any navigation in the header, it forces users to scroll to the bottom of the page where 100% of the links are located, in the footer. As long as users are ok with this method, there is nothing wrong with it. The footer seems quite spammy to me, and I would expect Panda to hurt this site a lot, but I don't think Panda has reached South Africa yet. If anyone can confirm the Panda status in SA, that would be helpful
-
the best backlinks are from other sites which he owns such as www.lifeinsurance.org.za which has the identical look and feel. There are also sites he works with such as www.fastcompany.com where the link appears on the profile page of the "Chairperson" of the company.
-
many other links are from blogs which don't add the "nofollow" tag to comments. First, these sites are not related to life insurance, so the linking value is minimized. The first such site I noticed is destructoid.com which is a gaming site. There are tons of others trying the same method so the links are highly diluted with over 500 links on the page. I have to believe that Google has some awareness to this type of issue and catches many of these links and wipes out their value. They could algorithmically investigate the site receiving these types of links and remove other links as well.
So in the end, what does your competitor offer? An exact match domain name with very solid on-page SEO. That is enough to earn good rankings. Combine it with a smaller market (South Africa) and the backlinks from his other sites which have solid PA/DA and he has earned his ranking.
You can collect as many FACTS as possible and share them with Google. Share the information about his network of sites demonstrating they clearly use the identical web template. Demonstrate the spam blog links. Report the site and hope some action is taken.
With the exception of the blog spam and duplicate sites, I would suggest copying some of his other tactics as there is nothing black hat about them.
-
-
According to OSE his page authority is built up by finding blogs without rel=nofollow in their comment section and spamming his keywords in the links on hundreds of blog comments.
Frankly I'm surprised this is working so well.
-
Okay, that makes sense.
-
Is there any reason your competitor's site information cannot be shared openly in this Q&A? Without looking at the site, we are left to offer general feedback which clearly wont be as helpful.
-
I agree, but how do you compete? For example, he gets links from so-called 'authority' sites such as http://www.multicrawl.com/ with a Page Authority of 64 (PR 6)
And sites such as http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.db.html where I can't even find his links on the page??
-
This type of SEO drives me crazy and it's one of the aspects of SEO that makes me want to pull my hair out. Typically you see "SEO" companies that participant in awful, obviously black hat SEO and they rank quickly and for a long time. A white hat SEO tries to build quality links but it's near impossible to dislodge these websites when faced with the overwhelming value provided from these spammy websites.
I'd be happy to take a look at the website's backlink profile as well (PM Me). I recently came up against a massive link pyramid that I had to compete against and I know how frustrating it can be.
-
Ryan, I'll be PM his details to you
-
I don't know if I can offer any insight, but if you provide a link its more likely.

Old school SEO tools / software / websites
Hey Mozzers, I am doing some research and wonder if you can help me out? Before Moz, Hubspot, Majestic, Screaming Frog and all the other awesome SEO tools we use today what were the SEO tools / software / websites that were used for aiding SEO? I guess we can add the recently closed Yahoo! Directory for starters! Thanks!

Does using parent pages in WordPress help with SEO and/or indexing for SERPs?
I have a law office and we handle four different practice areas. I used to have multiple websites (one for each practice area) with keywords in the actual domain name, but based on the recommendation of SEO "experts" a few years ago, I consolidated all the webpages into one single webpage (based on the rumors at the time that Google was going to be focusing on authorship and branding in the future, rather than keywords in URLs or titles). Needless to say, Google authorship was dropped a year or two later and "branding" never took off. Overall, having one webpage is convenient and generally makes SEO easier, but there's been a huge drawback: When my page comes up in SERPs after searching for "attorney" or "lawyer" combined with a specific practice area, the practice area landing pages don't typically come up in the SERPs, only the front page comes up. It's as if Google recognizes that I have some decent content, and Google knows that I specialize in multiple practice areas, but it directs everyone to the front page only. Prospective clients don't like this and it causes my bounce rate to be high. They like to land on a page focusing on the practice area they searched for. Two questions: (1) Would using parent pages (e.g. http://lawfirm.com/divorce/anytown-usa-attorney-lawyer/ vs. http://lawfirm.com/anytown-usa-divorce-attorney-lawyer/) be better for SEO? The research I've done up to this point appears to indicate "no." It doesn't make much difference as long as the keywords are in the domain name and/or URL. But I'd be interested to hear contrary opinions. (2) Would using parent pages (e.g. http://lawfirm.com/divorce/anytown-usa-attorney-lawyer/ vs. http://lawfirm.com/anytown-usa-divorce-attorney-lawyer/) be better for indexing in Google SERPs? For example, would it make it more likely that someone searching for "anytown usa divorce attorney" would actually end up in the divorce section of the website rather than the front page?

SEO for mobile sites?
Let's say I have an ecommerce site and it has a separate theme via device detection. So I may even have different content on the pages. So for example, on desktop, on mysite.com/flowers I have a video about flowers. But on mobile, I have 10 000 words of text. Will this page rank better for people searching via mobile? Will google give different search rankings, based on desktop vs. mobile? Or how is Google calculating this? Are there any good mobile SEO tips or a knowhow base?

Is My SEO Strategy Doomed?
Hi Mozzers, Second time poster here and still a major rookie with SEO. I run the website http://OrangeOctop.us/, it provides winning tips for video games such as FIFA, NBA 2K, NHL. All of the tips are written by experts and professional gamers. The site has been trying to rank for the term "NHL 14 Tips". To give you some more background info, the actual game, NHL 14, does not come out for another two weeks. I was just being proactive with trying to rank for a term that will be popular in the future. My Wordpress category page, http://orangeoctop.us/nhl14-tips/, ranked as high as #5 for "NHL 14 Tips", but it seems that as it gets closer to the game's release date, I get pushed further down the google rankings. In the most recent Moz crawl, my site just dropped 11 spots. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

SEO For sub locations for specific services
Hey Guys, I am currently creating a website for my business that will be marketing through SEO very heavily. I Live in NYC, and i'd like to rank up for the individual locations such as Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island and eventually if my domain authority and other long hall metrics kick in NYC. What I find very tiring is targeting these locations all separately, it means I need to create the same site 4 times with completely different and unique content. Should this setup work for me, and is there a risk that Google will see 4 web design pages, and basically say even though the content is unique your ranking up for web design with a location too many times? from my understanding this is not a problem now, but is this a future risk? It also becomes extremely difficult for site navigation with about us pages, contact us pages, and other pages that either have to be duplicated or all pages shown on sidebar for navigation. Please share your thoughts with me, THANKS!!!

Giving Follow Links is good for SEO ?
Hi Friends, In my website I am having PR 5 for my home page and I am giving 25 external links as follow link. Reason is all links are natural links so I gave as follow links. Will my website will be decrease PR in future. 1) Should I need to give as nofollow links? 2) Can I update only for reciprocal links as nofollow? In total 25 links I have 3 reciprocal links only. Your suggestions on this are important for me. I had watched couple of videos from Matt Cutts on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4UJS-LFRTU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g37bwBlifnk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg1A5wF3Ac4 Thanks for your valuable time.

SEO Strategy Audit
Greetings Mozzers. I would really appreciate some input / advice / a sanity check on our existing SEO strategy. A year into implementing the strategy (outlined below) there appears to be no uplift in our existing traffic volume. I guess i'm wondering. Am I on the right track? Is there something I'm perhaps additional should be doing / i'm doing something wrong? Am I suffering from Penguin? The strategy: We produce a range of content, this is written 100% for our audience, How-to guides, infographics, industry news etc. - this has lead to getting a wide range of publications with high powered relevant domains, widely shared and read. As a result we now have a series of ongoing columns where we regularly produce articles that our widely read and shared. We have a wide variety of homepage and deep links from quality sources. We have our own blog producing a wide range of content relevant to our audience. Industry trends, news, changes that affect our readers, guides. We optimise our pages using the Moz Page Grader for select keywords. We've structured our site architecture appropriately for the most important pages. Additional info: We received a WMT penalty last year in march - unnatural links. We engaged an SEO agency who simply went rogue, automated link building with spun articles. We fired the agency, asked them to remove the links they had "created" and set about a resubmission. Between March and May when we made our resubmission traffic dropped 40%. Now we did have he resubmission accepted after several reconsiderations but whilst we've seen a slight recovery we have plateaued for almost a year. This penalty obviously straddles the time penguin arrived, so I wonder if perhaps we haven't seen a recovery as we are still affected by penguin. Despite all the great work we have done. If anyone has any advice or insight, please do get in touch.

Help with local Seo?
Hi, I am really struggling with current predicament i find myself in. I am a small to medium sized business based in Newcastle in the UK and am trying to rank well locally for the keywords that i feel my customers will be searching for locally. I have got to the stage where i am on page 1 of google uk or nearly there but cannot compete against the national companies who have the search terms then just add pages for virtually every city in the country. For example my main product is "Artificial Grass" and my city/town is Newcastle This is where my office is and where my customers are. This is also where my google places page states. Now theres a company that sells Artificial Grass called www.asgoodasgrass.co.uk that are based no where near but use the power of there site to come up in every local search by adding a page "Artificial Grass Newcastle" as well as hundreds of others. They rank 3rd and im 8th. There actual Newcastle page is poor, where as i put everything into my page including pics, video etc. Still no joy. I feel i am always going to rank behind these big boys even though i am the actual local company and have no intention of working others area that are not local to me. By the time i rank behind the above type companies and the likes of yell.com i feel i am never going to be seen and fall back on expensive adwords to help me along. I am a complete newbie at this and would love any help or tips you could give to give me a fighting chance in my area. My site is www.totaldrivewaysne.co.uk incase you want to look as you will have gathered my other primary product is driveways for which also i feel like i have a million competitors! many many thanks for any responses John
