Can a site be removed from alexa?
-
let's say you have complete control over the webserver, and the hosting server.
is there a way to set it up so that alexa statistics CANNOT be gained?
-
thanks - i had done a bit more research and found the name of the user agent and the use in the robots file at http://www.alexa.com/help/webmasters
i did not know about 2 - did not know you can collect that data on your own..
and of course 3 - that wouldn't help this client ( or wannabe client... lol )

There are several methods used by Alexa to collect data about your site.
1. The Alexa crawler. It can be blocked using robots.txt as follows:
User-agent: ia_archiver
Disallow: /2. Alexa analytics. Similar to Google Analytics, simply remove the code from your site's web pages and Alexa would no longer have access to this data. This method only applies if you have installed Alexa Analytics code on your site.
3. Alexa toolbar. The toolbar is installed on user pc's. It tracks all web traffic by users. In order to prevent this tracking, a user would either need to uninstall the toolbar, change a setting on the toolbar, or block traffic to Alexa. These form of data collection is a primary source of information for Alexa, and is why Alexa data is relatively unreliable.
There is not any reasonable step you can take to prevent this form of data collection.

Representing categories on my site
My site serves a consumer-focused industry that has about 15-20 well recognized categories, which act as a pretty obvious way to segment our content. Each category supports it's own page (with some useful content) and a series of articles relevant to that category. In short, the categories are pretty focal to what we do. I am moving from DNN to WordPress as my CMS/blog. I am taking the opportunity to review and fix SEO-related issues as I migrate. One such area is my URL structure. On my existing site (on DNN), I have the following types of pages for each topic: / <topic>- this is essentially the landing page for the topic and links to articles</topic> /<topic>/articles/ <article-name>- topics have 3-15 articles with this URL structure</article-name></topic> With WordPress, I am considering moving to articles being under the root. So, an article on (making this up) how to make a widget would be under /how-to-make-a-widget, instead of /<widgets>/article/how-to-make-a-widget I will be using WordPress categories to reflect the topics taxonomy, so I can flag my articles using standard WordPress concepts.</widgets> Anyway, I'm trying to get my head around whether it makes sense to "flatten" my URL structure such that the URLs for each article no longer include the topic (the article page will link to the topic page though). Thoughts?

If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect?
If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect? If this scenario requires a 301 redirect no matter what, I might as well update the URL to be a little more keyword rich for the page while I'm at it. However, since these pages are ranking well I'd rather not lose any authority in the process and keep the URL just stripped of the ".html" (if that's possible). Thanks for you help! Google and QnA sites
My website has a QnA site - a bit like this one except it's not private to premium members. It is a page with a left colomn for category links and it has a list of recently asked questions, each question is a link to view the full question and answers etc. Does google know this is a QnA ? Or will it say - hey, there are far too many links on this page, tut tut. Is there anything I can do to help it understand what the page is.
