Duplicate Title question
-
Thanks Mozzers in advance for any insight into what I'm sure is a basic SEO question.
I'm working with a resort in the great state of Maine. Their home page title reads Maine Resorts, Resorts in Maine, (company name).
The site has about 400 URL's and over half of the URL's utilize the first keyword phrase of the home page title, "Maine Resorts." Predominately, I find them used on the Accommodations pages (pages that describe each room with a picture) which I would label as deeper pages and non-conversion type pages. The page titles themselves are not exact duplicates of the Home Page Title but might read something like "Maine Resorts, Company Name, Accommodation Listing."
My concern is that the heavy use of "Maine Resorts" as the first phrase in over 200 plus pages might be competing against the home page and pulling the home page ranking down.
Thanks for any help given!

Thanks guys! Your help is really appreciated. When I took the site over I thought, "man, 200 pages eating into the home page." In some respects this is true but your answers have provided me with a couple ways of fixing this. Fantastic, gotta love MOZ!

What you seem to be addressing in your question is the value (or lack thereof) of having the term "Maine Resorts" as the first term in many of the sites titles. As you suspected, there is little value in doing so, but including "Maine Resorts" somewhere (just not at the start) of those titles is not necessarily a bad idea.
What would be more valuable, would be to use that first position for the targeted keyword(s) of that page. So for the "Accommodation Listing" page:
Accommodation Listing, Maine Resorts, [company name]
Think of a user searching for:
accommodation listings for Maine resorts
Now your Google, which of these two pages do you return (if based on title alone)?
- Maine Resorts, [company name], Accommodation Listing
- Accommodation Listing, Maine Resorts, [company name]
So, If you have a homepage that focuses on "Maine Resorts" as a term, than having the term as the first term works in that case:
Maine Resorts, [company name]
Sounds like your titles are already unique, it's just a matter of tweaking them to be more valuable

Each page should have a unique title. It is ok to duplicate the site name such as
Contact Us | Maine Resorts
Reservations | Maine Resorts
The title of the page itself should otherwise be unique. It is also ok to have a partial match but the full title should never be duplicated. For example the following titles would not be considered as duplicates:
Cabins
Log Cabins
Cabin Retreats
If any page has the exact title as another page, it would be considered as a duplicate title and should be corrected.

How come canonicalized pages are showing in the Duplicate Titles report?
I am currently removing all duplicate titles from my site via title tag changes, 301's, and in some instances, canonical tags. I'm confused about why the Moz report spit out pages with duplicate titles that are canonicalized to other pages. Does Google actually consider these pages as having duplicate titles? Or is Roger Mozbot not intuitive enough to to disregard those pages?

Redirect question
Hi Everyone I've tried searching elsewhere in these forums for an answer to this but not having much luck - hope I'm not duplicating content! I get this message in Moz: "We have detected that the domain NappyValleyNet.com redirects to www.nappyvalleynet.com. We do not recommend tracking a redirect URL. Would you like to track www.nappyvalleynet.com for this campaign instead?" Is this a set-up issue on my side? I'm not sure what this means? Thank you!

Ecommerce question - overoptimisation
Hi there, I'm the owner of this site http://goo.gl/76Mrbd and I have a newbie question We have a large number of vintage clothing items, and for SEO purposes I would like to rank for keywords "vintage insert designer name". I've been titling all our items with the phrase "vintage insert designer skirt/dress/pants etc" - but I've noticed that when we google these phrases - an example being "vintage moschino" we don't rank for them at all, despite the fact that each individual page gets a decent "page optimisation score" for that particular keyword. Many people have suggested to me that the reason this is so is because we're using the keyword too much on our site, but I can't get my head around how to fix this. What would be the best way to restructure our product descriptions so that we can fix this? Thanks in advance

Duplicate content issues?
Our company consists of several smaller companies, some of whom deal with very similar things. For instance, two of our companies resell accounts software, but only one provides after-sales support. Because of the number of different companies and websites we have, sometimes it would be easier to simply copy content from one site to the other, optimised in the same manner as, in some instances, we would want different websites to rank for the same keywords. I have been asked my opinion on the potential impact of this practice and my initial response was that we should avoid this due to potential penalties. However, I thought I'd garner opinion from a wider audience before making any recommendations either way. What do people think? Thanks.

Duplicate content on homepage?
Hi I have just created a new campaign and it states that I have duplicate page content which would affect search rankings. Basically it is counting my site www.mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com/index.php as two seperate pages. How can I make it so that only www.mydomain.com is visible reducing the duplicate content issue? Many Thanks
