Business Directories and Spammy Link Profile
-
Hi,
have been reading a lot about submissions to directories and posting spamming blogs and forums and how they're a bad idea, saw a great post on it by Rand in a white board Friday lecture, the only thing is I've been analysing a company and that appears to be what makes up its entire link profile, all the links point to their home page with their primary phrase as the anchor text.
Just wondered how a company with some 4k links the majority being follows, hasn't been penalised for what are a really bad set of back links.
Should add that this is an insurance company, they're no light weights in their industry but certainly not one of the big boys.
Thanks, Lee

is funny you say that, was analysing a site the other day and they had lots of links from graphical blog post, think they came from abode illustrator tutorials, commenting has been blocked now but those links were generating a lot of authority, low 70's.
Which raises an important point thats something worth considering, commenting on pages that are likely to mature in respect of PA, what might only get a little authority now might in say 3-4 years yield something worth having,
Good points thanks a lot.

I think considering the history and particularly the issues surrounding low quality directories, most of which who were banned are back and listed, it shows a lack of commitment by Google to stamp out this kind of low quality linking, which is plainly done to artificially inflate rankings.
Concerning the Panda update I just think this is a response by Google to fire-fight the popularity of social media. Interesting that Panda and Google+ were both introduced relatively close together.
And I guess you can understand that, I get most of my business from social sites, Facebook being my main source of work and so that's reflected in how much time is spent socialising there. More time being social less time Googling!
Thanks for your comment.

Agreed Opt,
I took a look at their competition (the big boys) their links profiles were spectacular lots of heavy weigh authority sites, National Press, Stock Market (75-90 PA) . I guess it all boils down to who they're employing to do their seo, hire low grade and the results will reflect that quality.
Still somewhat hesitant to adopt this kind of link building strategy myself, I have made blog comments but they've been genuine and lengthy responses to posts in my industry.
thanks appreciate your comment

I see this absolutely in the graphic and logo design industry. Newer sites spamming the web with directory/forum/article spam links are getting to the first page and bumping off MUCH older sites that just post good content on their websites and do not actively go after spam link building!
Very unfortunate! But it is definitely working!!!

Despite what a lot of people say I still feel that link building in this sense works as long as you are strict with it. If they are making sure the directories have a good authority, they have a mix of followed v no-followed and build in some sort of organic manner (consistent drip of links).
I think a lot of concern is that the search engines are working out which links are manufactured in this manner and will soon heavily devalue them, but in the here and now it works to some extent.
I guess the other thing to consider is the competition - if it is this type of link building v no link building I guess this would win...

Hi Lee,
I know how you feel. I feel the same when I see this happening quite often unfortunately.
What I think it is: they got their spammy backlinks before Panda update and haven't been caught. As yet.
I do hope that Google keeps improving it's algorithms and one day we won't see such cases. Or I'm just being an optimist...
Regards,
Alex

# of links and how it impacts ranking
Hi everyone I was running a competitor analysis in Moz Pro of my site and 3 competitors that are ranked above me. One of the things I noticed is that my # of total links is very high compared to 2 of my competitors(please see attachment). Other seo tools are telling me the same. This is mainly due to a few affiliate sites that have us in their footer. I was wondering if this could impact our ranking if some of these sites have very low domain authority and have thousands of backlinks to our site? I am looking into starting the disavowing process. Alternatives To Link Detective
Hi, A while back I used link detective to scan through our OSE reports. However, it seems that the site is no longer maintained and the system no longer seems to work, ie I upload the CSV file and then when i check back it leads to a blank screen. I wonder if anyone knows of a similar software as its functionality was very useful. Thanks

Why are my paid vendors not showing on our links?
We pay a hefty amount to site that claim to bring in leads. ie... Cars.com, Edmunds.com, Cargurus, and I also have my dCard (digital business cards) with links to our URL. Why aren't they showing on our PA or DA? Could it be our web host? We have on;y 2 options for web hosts per Acura (a compliance thing) Please help with any thoughts or answers to this. I see many other dealers with strong links who use the same companies. Our site is http://findlayacura.com and thank you for any help. We appreciate it greatly.

How to beat directories in local search.
After just a couple months I'm placing on the first page for some keywords but I need advice on how to get over the hump. Search results for "Lakeville Snow Plowing" and "Lakeville Snow Removal" return directory results for the 1rst 3 listings above the local results.. I'm right below that at 5 and 7.. (I'm not showing up in local results even though I have a radius but that's another issue) Any tips or advice to compete against these type of results rather than a direct competitor? How does a small company with limited to no budget go about outranking BBB and Manta.com? I'm considering purchasing the BBB membership, and I imagine a link from them would be helpful, other than that, I could use some advice. Derrick

Discrepancy in Competitive Link Analysis?
I currently have a campaign set-up that monitors a few competitors compared to our site. When I look at the Root Domain Metrics I see that Company A has 2,053 total external links, and Company B has 1,632 total external links. I wanted to view these links in more detail so I ran Advanced Inbound Links reports. The reports returned 432 results for Company A and 693 results for Company B. Shouldn't these numbers match up with each other, or am I missing something? Also, I noticed that in the Inbound Links analysis for my competitors there are a number of results listed that are not actually inbound links, but are internal links from there own site. Is there a reason these are appearing? I am having problems because I am trying to use this campaign to show the improvements in our site vs our competitors. However, OSE shows dramatically fewer total external links for our site (about 260 vs 3200 in Webmaster Tools) and I cannot tell if the competitor data is accurate? Thanks

Are My Links Valuable?
I have been link building for a couple months now. I am having a hard time trying to figure out which sites are even worthy of getting links from. Obviously, those that are clearly link farming, or have lots of ads throughout their site are not valuable. I use OSE, but don't know what is a good P.A or D.A. and what it means when one is much higher than the other (and if that is a bad thing). I also use compete.com to give me a general idea of the unique visitors going into a site. Any tools I can use to help evaluate the strength of specific incoming links/ specific websites? Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks So Much, Melissa
