Dynamically generated page issues

Hello All!
Our site uses dynamically generated pages. I was about to begin the process of optimising our product category pages www.pitchcare.com/shop
I was going to use internal anchor text from some high ranking pages within our site but each of the product category pages already have 1745 links!
Am I correct in saying that internal anchor text links works to a certain point? (maybe 10 or so links)
So any new internal anchor text links will count for nothing?

If every single product page is linking to a category page, I am sure that Google will discount these links some what. I think linking from articles and good quality content to the category pages will have some positive effect, but like others have mentioned don't spend too long working on this as the total benefit will not be huge.

Linking from articles is still "worthwhile" - obviously don't spend a ton of time on it because it is still an internal link after all..

Oh I see you meant the first link on a single page is the most important, sure I understand this.
I also understand the link is best placed in the content area of the page (not footers etc)
The problem I have is that every single product page has a link to the category pages. ie every category page has 1745 internal links pointing to it from seperate pages.
I thought that internal linking from multiple pages was only effective for a max of around 10? so adding more links from artilces would make no difference?
If I'm correct how do e-commerce websites with dynamically generated pages combat this issue?

It's true that the first link to any given URL is the most important one - in other words there is no point in linking twice or more to the same place from a single page. This is a common problem with category pages that use a product image to link to the product first - it should be second (at least in the markup).
Now, to answer your question - yes, add links in the content part of the page (not header/footer/sidebars) to pages that you want to receive some love. Content links are the most powerful. Link from articles to product categories and/or product detail pages.

Link juice isn't passed equally through all links, but does trickle through at some level. Exactly what this is, is something of an unknown though. Perhaps someone can add a little more clarification on this?
I would say that adding another good quality link would make little (if any) difference and it is not something I would hesitate doing myself.
However, there comes a point where a page full of links will have a negative effect, but with just a few well targeted ones, I would say you would be fine with that.

Thanks for the response.
We have thousands of on topic articles that i could link from so no problem there. I also understand this will improve the user experience but I'm only concerned about passing page rank at this stage.
You say the first link is the most important so surely adding another rich anchor text link from other pages will make very little or no difference as there are already 1700 links pointing to that page?
Is there any penalty for too many internal links to a page that could have a negative effect on rankings?

Hi Todd,
The rule of thumb is that the first link that Google comes across is the most important one, so it would be worthwhile looking carefully at this. You can have other links on the pages, as long as there are not too many, because this can actually improve the user experience, so they will never count for nothing - just be mindful that the content is the important part right now.
Where possible try and embed anchor text in content that is 'on-topic'.

Weird Indexing Issues with the Pages and Rankings
When I found the my page was non-existent on the search results page, I requested Google to index my page via the Search Console. And then just a few minutes after I did that, that page rose to top 3 ranking on the search page (with the same keyword and browser search). It happens to most of the pages on my website. Maybe a week later the rankings sank again, and I had to do the process again to make my pages to the top. Any reasons to explain this phenomenon, and how I can fix this issue? Thank you in advance.

Post migration issues - #11 + configuration issue
Hello Moz community. I'm keen to find out your experiences on the following: Have you ever experienced a migration whereby a large % of keywords are stuck in position #11 - post migration? The keywords do not move up or down (whilst competitors jump from 13 to 9 and vice versa) over a three month period. Please see the % difference in the attached e-mail. (sample 1,000 keyword terms) Question: Has anyone ever experienced this type of phenomenon before? If so - what was the root cause of this and did this happen post migration? What solution did you use to rectify this? Have you ever seen a cross-indexing issue between two domains (each domain serves a different purpose) post migration, which impacts the performance of the main brand domain? I will explain a little further - say you have www.example.com (brand site) and www.example-help.com (customer service site) and the day the brand website is migrated (same domain - just different file structure), www.example-help.com points to the same server that www.example.com is on (with a different file structure) and starts to inherit the legacy file structure. Category pages
I am a very basic question on managing categories in WordPress. We have an Android website, and we cover news, rumors, tips and tricks about new devices. We have been creating categories for the new devices or at least for the popular ones which are launched every year, and link to them internally with the hope that it would improve the page authority and ranking. For example, we have a category page for Moto X, another one for Moto X (2014) and one more for Moto X (2015). One of the reasons for creating a category was to ensure that it is easier for readers to get information about a particular device rather than going to a category page that has information about all the models. However, the problem with their strategy we're now realizing is that it means we have to build page authority for the new category page from scratch, which can take time. So we are thinking of reusing the same category for multiple models. So reuse the Moto X category page for Moto X (2016). However, we are not sure if it would be right approach as we would be linking to the same category page with different anchor texts. So while it would be good to reuse a page rather than rebuild the page authority from scratch, would we be diluting the authority for the main keyword by using it for different models. I would love to hear your thoughts on how we should be handling categories and internal links in this case.

Do I eventually 301 a page on our site that "expires," to a page that's related, but never expires, just to utilize the inbound link juice?
Our company gets inbound links from news websites that write stories about upcoming sporting events. The links we get are pointing to our event / ticket inventory pages on our commerce site. Once the event has passed, that event page is basically a dead page that shows no ticket inventory, and has no content. Also, each “event” page on our site has a unique url, since it’s an event that will eventually expire, as the game gets played, or the event has passed. Example of a url that a news site would link to: mysite.com/tickets/soldier-field/t7493325/nfc-divisional-home-game-chicago bears-vs-tbd-tickets.aspx Would there be any negative ramifications if I set up a 301 from the dead event page to another page on our site, one that is still somewhat related to the product in question, a landing page with content related to the team that just played, or venue they play in all season. Example, I would 301 to: mysite.com/venue/soldier-field tickets.aspx (This would be a live page that never expires.) I don’t know if that’s manipulating things a bit too much.

Home page not being indexed
Hi Moz crew. I have two sites (one is a client's and one is mine). They are both Wordpress sites and both are hosted on WP Engine. They have both been set up for a long time, and are "on-page" optimized. Pages from each site are indexed, but Google is not indexing the homepage for either site. Just to be clear - I can set up and work on a Wordpress site, but am not a programmer. Both seem to be fine according to my Moz dashboard. I have Webmaster tools set up for each - and as far as I can tell (definitely not an exper in webmaster tools) they are okay. I have done the obvious and checked that the the box preventing Google from crawling is not checked, and I believe I have set up the proper re-directs and canonicals.Thanks in advance! Brent

Mobile Sitemap Issue
Hi there, I am having some difficulty with an error on Webmaster Tools. I'm concerned with a possible duplicate content penalty following the launch of my mobile site. I have attempted to update my sitemap to inform Google that a different mobile page exists in addition to the desktop page. I have followed Google's guidelines as outlined here:

Webmaster tools is reporting that it is not able to read the file and when I validate it I am getting an error stating that the 'Namespace prefix xhtml on link is not defined'. Content Landing Page
Hey Mozzers, I wanted to get some opinions on here. I'm going to be building out the content on my site a lot of the next couple of months, and have recently started thinking about creating a content landing page. For those not familiar with the concept it's the idea of building this page that basically just pulls together all the content you've written on a specific subject & serves as hopefully a link magnet & destination for people interested in the topic. So my question is this, I am just outlining all of the different posts & areas that I want to cover on specific topics & it is a lot. I'm talking ~20 posts on each subject. Do you think that would be too much content to try & get on one page? Should I break it down to a more finite 5-7 links to high quality articles per page, or create basically this monster guide that links to all these different articles I'll create. Domain Issue
Starting a new local travel guide site. Would like to buy a domain and have found one with decent Domain Authority and Trust, but they want $2500 for the domain which I feel is a bit steep since I will be not using any of the content and it is generating hardly any revenue now. . I would rather not start from scratch with no links and no trust. I have a few questions.... -Any suggestions on sites to look for domains or strategy for finding and offering to buy? Any guidelines on how to value domains? If I but it and change registration do I risk losing all the value? Cold I just change technical contact info? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
