Can you spot the reasons for our site dropping in rankings so significantly?
-
We've been racking our brains over this since the recent search engine changes (the notorious and non-cuddley Google Panda update) and have, within reason, corrected as many of the problems that we possibly can yet still our traffic drops further.
http://www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com used to rank fairly equally with it's competitors however since the update (and a number of suggestions from another SEO company), the traffic has dropped by about 90% and it's dropped almost completely from the search results (unlike the competitors who are breaking many faux-pars yet remain well ranked).
I don't think we're seeing the wood from the trees anymore so I'd be grateful if someone could take a look and see if we've missed anything glaringly obvious?
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks
Tim
Big changes around the same time/since that might be worth noting:
- Setup a canonical domain name of www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com and (using IIS7) 301 redirect all other traffic over.
- Setup canonical URL meta tag for all results pages so they point to a single page
- Moved the redirect page (the one which sends users to the B&B's site) to another subdomain.
- Redesigned the URLs where possible to use "friendlier" and more keyword rich urls and 301 redirecting for the old urls
- Added XML sitemaps to the various tools (we found out they weren't there before)
- Added a robots.txt file
- Lowercased all urls
- Where possible removed duplicate results pages and pointed them at a single page
- Restructured the page titles to be more relevant
- Setup nofollow on the external urls
-
Sure, one thing I forgot to mention. Look at your XML sitemap. It doesn't seem to be correctly formatted at all, and it caused my window to freeze loading it. I'd look into that.
As far as the backlinks, yes I would start to build up some positive and natural backlinks. Start with all the social profiles, like linkedin, youtube, facebook, twitter - make sure they all have links pointing to your site. Put unique, useful content on them. Try knowem to find more relevant social media sites to register with.
Then I would read over this guide to linking building and try putting it into practice to build new links.
A full off-site review is obviously out f the scope of this Q&A, but you can run your site through open site explorer and take a look - see if there's any sites that stick out like a sore thumb with a lot of links that provide no value (low quality domain, spammy or tons of exact match anchor text). Pick the worst sites and contact them and see if you can get them removed.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Dan, there's some interesting bits there. Nice to hear we don't necessarily need to redesign the site (though we still feel it would benefit the user).
We've not done any back link analysis no -and I can't explain those two spikes either but we have noticed a large increase in the number of robots storing invalid links (e.g. ones which have been truncated) which was one of the reasons we looked to move to friendlier URLs.
In regards the back links, is this mostly a matter of improving the quality of the sites linking to us to resolve this?
-
Ryan's on-site analysis is great. But I honestly don't think its the total reason for a 90% drop in traffic.
In taking a quick look at off-site, its looking like you have a very unnatural backlink portfolio.
And take a look at the screenshot of Majestic's historic backlink discovery. All the sporadic spiking as well as referring domains spiking without total links spiking or vice versa is the sign of links being acquired unnaturally.
Plus only half of your external links are followed, and there's even much less linking C-blocks, which means many of your links are coming from the same place.
The good news is, you can address this without redesigning the site, but the bad news is, it could take a bit of effort in its self. I'd suggest starting with a back link audit.
Have you done much by way of trying to clean up your links?

Thanks Ryan, all valid points (we'd like to redesign the site but thanks to the massive drop in traffic and subsequently sales) are having to hold off. Interesting point about the homepage links, we'll look into that thanks.

A few items I noticed:
1. Your home page has over 300 links. Ideally you should have under 100 but at least keep it under 150.
2. In the center section you have a "B&Bs By Category" block. I am using FF7 and the top three columns are cut off so the last 3 links in each column cannot be seen. I am unsure if this issue exists in all browsers but this could be taken as hidden links and cause you to incur a penalty. Users cannot see all the links.
3. Your home page title is too long and will get cut off. I would suggest just using your site name and save the rest for your meta description.
4. Going back to the links on the page, it is not simply the number of links but how they are presented. The page is basically a big collection of links. It doesn't present a good user experience.
5. The page itself is actually difficult to read. As you look through the various blocks such as "B&B Articles", you offer teasers of 8 different articles and most do not even complete the first sentence before being cut off with ...
From a Panda perspective of a user looking at a quality webpage, the presentation is not good. There is far too much being crammed onto the page. Several of the link blocks should be removed entirely. The blocks which share content such as "Featured B&Bs" and "B&B Special Offers should either contain fewer entries and/or be widened to 1/2 a page rather then 1/3 of a page.
The above is my feedback and would require a significant redesign of the home page. My suggestion would be to try it with A/B testing.

One other (big) change that we made was that the old developers used to pass around a session id for the user on all pages so every time Google came back to the same page, it would get new content. This resulted in Webmaster Tools having over 35M pages for the site (there's about 100k at most). We fixed this issue but we're wondering whether it was actually helping (despite what's recommended)?

Can a Swiss mailing address hurt my ranking in the USA
Hello, I have a US phone number on my website because all my clients are in the USA but a Swiss address on my website because I am based in Switzerland. I also registered my website on google my business with a Swiss address. I noticed that I rank fairly well (on the 1 st page for many keywords in Switzerland when searching from my location (Switzerland) on google.com but when I connect to adwords (choosing USA) or with a proxy in the USA to check my ranking I see myself nowhere on the 1 st page. Why is that ? is it because I have a Swiss address ?Is the fact that I have a Swiss address and I am based in Switzerland hurt my ranking in the USA ?Thank you,

How can a site rank high without any visible SEO tactics?
Hi SEO specialists, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but there is something bugging me for awhile now, so I thought let's give it a try. I work for several clients and one of them works in the Psychic business. Since a few months we see that site from Psychicvop.com is taking over all kinds of top rankings in Google. The strange thing is that I can't detect anything that I always learned which is basic material for SEO. There isn't much content and there link profile isn't really spectacular either. Does any of you have an idea what it is about this sites that makes them outrank every other site in the business?

Website redesign, some urls are no longer available. How do I mitigate ranking drops?
I am currently refreshing my WordPress business website. I used a theme that had a built in portfolio option. I wanted to strip down the bloat and move to something more simple to better articulate my message. Upon switching themes I will loose my urls for my portfolio projects. I should have never used this built in function but it did exactly what I needed and wanted here is an example. http://silvernailwebdesign.com/portfolio-view/central-jersey-claims-association-wordpress-consulting/ Now on my staging site these portfolio pieces have vanished and the urls are indexed with google. I could create posts and recreate the portfolio pieces however the problem with the url is the /portfolio-view/ portion. I cannot recreate the part of the url. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I receive some traffic through the portfolio pages but not much, however, I do not want to loose any traffic. I am looking for a strategy that will solve this url issue with WordPress. I have about 10 separate portfolio pages with this url issue.

Pages are being dropped from index after a few days - AngularJS site serving "_escaped_fragment_"
My URL is: https://plentific.com/ Hi guys, About us: We are running an AngularJS SPA for property search.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | emre.kazan
Being an SPA and an entirely JavaScript application has proven to be an SEO nightmare, as you can imagine.
We are currently implementing the approach and serving an "escaped_fragment" version using PhantomJS.
Unfortunately, pre-rendering of the pages takes some time and even worse, on separate occasions the pre-rendering fails and the page appears to be empty. The problem: When I manually submit pages to Google, using the Fetch as Google tool, they get indexed and actually rank quite well for a few days and after that they just get dropped from the index.
Not getting lower in the rankings but totally dropped.
Even the Google cache returns a 404. The question: 1.) Could this be because of the whole serving an "escaped_fragment" version to the bots? (have in mind it is identical to the user visible one)? or 2.) Could this be because we are using an API to get our results leads to be considered "duplicate content" and that's why? And shouldn't this just result in lowering the SERP position instead of a drop? and 3.) Could this be a technical problem with us serving the content, or just Google does not trust sites served this way? Thank you very much! Pavel Velinov

Unexplained Drop In Ranking and Traffic-HELP!
I operate a real estate web site in New York City (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com). It was hit by Penguin in April 2012, with search volume falling from 6,800 per month in March 2012 to 3,300 by June 2012. After refreshing content and changing the theme, volume recovered to 4,300 per month in October 2013. There was a big improvement in early October 2013, perhaps tied to a Panda update. In November 2013 I hired an SEO company. They are reputable; on MOZ's recommended list. After following all their suggestions (searching and removing duplicate content, disavowing toxic links, improving the site structure to make it easier for Google to index listings, re-writing ten key landing pages, improving the design of the user interface) ranking and traffic started to decline in April of 2014 and crashed in June 2014 after an upgraded design with improved user interface was launched. Search volume is went from 4700 in March to around 3800 in June. However ranking on the keywords that generate conversions has really declined, and clicks from those terms are down at least 65%. My online business is severely compromised after I have spent almost double the anticipated budget to improve ranking and conversion. A few questions: 1. Could a drop in the number of domains lining to our site have led to this decline? About 30 domains that had toxic links to us agreed to remove them. We had another 70 domains disavowed in late April. We only have 78 domains pointing to our domain now, far less than before (see attached AHREFs image). It seems there is a correlation in the timeline between the number of domains pointing to us and ranking performance. The number of domains pointing to us has never been this low. Could this be causing the drop? My SEO firm believes that the quality of these links are very low and the fact that many are gone is in fact a plus. 2. The number of indexed pages has jumped to 851 from 675 in early June (see attached image from Google Webmaster tools), right after a site upgrade. The number of pages in the site map is around 650. Could the indexation of the extra 175 page somehow have diluted the quality of the site in Google's eyes? We have filed removal request for these pages in Mid June and again last week with Google but they still appear. In 2013 we also launched an upgrade and Google indexed an extra 500 pages (canonical tags were not set up correctly) and search volume and ranking collapsed. Oddly enough when the number of pages indexed by Google fell, ranking improved. I wonder if something similar has occurred. 3. May 2014 Panda update. Many of our URLs are product URLs of listings. They have less than 100 words. Could Google suddenly be penalizing us for that? It is very difficult to write descriptions of hundreds of words for products that change quickly. I would think the Google takes this into account. If someone could present some insight into this issue I would be very, very grateful. I have spent over $25,000 on SEO reports, wireframe design and coding and now find myself in a worse position than when I started. My SEO provider is now requesting that I purchase even more reports for several thousand dollars and I can't afford it, nor can I justify it after such poor results. I wish they would take it upon themselves to identify what went wrong. In any case, if anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. I am very suspicious that this drop started in earnest at the time of link removal and the disavow and accelerated at the time of the launch of the upgrade. What has a better chance of ranking alongside my main site for my company name, a subdomain or new domain?
Hi Moz, Do search engines really treat subdomains as separate domains in this regard? Or are we more likely to get more real estate on the first page with a new domain? Our goal is to have our main site and this new subdomain or domain ranking in positions 1 and 2 for our company name. This is going to be a careers site/portal. Thanks for reading!

Can someone please help me understand my sites recent loss of rankings?
My site has been top 3 for 'speed dating' on Google.co.uk since about 2003 and it went to below top 50 for a lot of it's main keywords shortly after 27 Oct 2012. I did a re-submission request and was told there was 'no manual spam action'. I have a Page Authority of 53, a regular blog http://bit.ly/oKyi88, a KLOUT of 40, user reviews and quality content. I did discover that another URL I using was set to a 302 instead of a 301 for some reason. I don't necessarily think this was an issue as Google should know which is the trusted URL and therefore which content to list. I removed this redirect completely about 3 weeks ago, but I've seen no improvement. I'm looking at improving various things, but I'm still not sure why I've been hit and wonder if I'm missing something obvious? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Can literally any site get 'burned'?
Just curious what people think. The SEOMOZ trust on my site has gone up, all while Google is dropping us in rankings for lots of keywords. Just curious if this can happen to anyone or once you are 100% 'trusted' you're good. We went from 120,000 page views down to about 50,000. All while doubling content, improving the design(at least from a user perspective), and getting more natural links. Seems counter intuitive to Google's mantra of ranking quality. I would guess 'authority' sites never get hit by these updates right? So when you make it you've made it.(at least from a dropping like a rock perspective, obviously you have to keep working). I'm guessing we just need a bunch more quality links but would hate to work on building links, quality content, trust etc for it to be something so finicky long term.
