Can you spot the reasons for our site dropping in rankings so significantly?
-
We've been racking our brains over this since the recent search engine changes (the notorious and non-cuddley Google Panda update) and have, within reason, corrected as many of the problems that we possibly can yet still our traffic drops further.
http://www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com used to rank fairly equally with it's competitors however since the update (and a number of suggestions from another SEO company), the traffic has dropped by about 90% and it's dropped almost completely from the search results (unlike the competitors who are breaking many faux-pars yet remain well ranked).
I don't think we're seeing the wood from the trees anymore so I'd be grateful if someone could take a look and see if we've missed anything glaringly obvious?
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks
Tim
Big changes around the same time/since that might be worth noting:
- Setup a canonical domain name of www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com and (using IIS7) 301 redirect all other traffic over.
- Setup canonical URL meta tag for all results pages so they point to a single page
- Moved the redirect page (the one which sends users to the B&B's site) to another subdomain.
- Redesigned the URLs where possible to use "friendlier" and more keyword rich urls and 301 redirecting for the old urls
- Added XML sitemaps to the various tools (we found out they weren't there before)
- Added a robots.txt file
- Lowercased all urls
- Where possible removed duplicate results pages and pointed them at a single page
- Restructured the page titles to be more relevant
- Setup nofollow on the external urls
-
Sure, one thing I forgot to mention. Look at your XML sitemap. It doesn't seem to be correctly formatted at all, and it caused my window to freeze loading it. I'd look into that.
As far as the backlinks, yes I would start to build up some positive and natural backlinks. Start with all the social profiles, like linkedin, youtube, facebook, twitter - make sure they all have links pointing to your site. Put unique, useful content on them. Try knowem to find more relevant social media sites to register with.
Then I would read over this guide to linking building and try putting it into practice to build new links.
A full off-site review is obviously out f the scope of this Q&A, but you can run your site through open site explorer and take a look - see if there's any sites that stick out like a sore thumb with a lot of links that provide no value (low quality domain, spammy or tons of exact match anchor text). Pick the worst sites and contact them and see if you can get them removed.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Dan, there's some interesting bits there. Nice to hear we don't necessarily need to redesign the site (though we still feel it would benefit the user).
We've not done any back link analysis no -and I can't explain those two spikes either but we have noticed a large increase in the number of robots storing invalid links (e.g. ones which have been truncated) which was one of the reasons we looked to move to friendlier URLs.
In regards the back links, is this mostly a matter of improving the quality of the sites linking to us to resolve this?
-
Ryan's on-site analysis is great. But I honestly don't think its the total reason for a 90% drop in traffic.
In taking a quick look at off-site, its looking like you have a very unnatural backlink portfolio.
And take a look at the screenshot of Majestic's historic backlink discovery. All the sporadic spiking as well as referring domains spiking without total links spiking or vice versa is the sign of links being acquired unnaturally.
Plus only half of your external links are followed, and there's even much less linking C-blocks, which means many of your links are coming from the same place.
The good news is, you can address this without redesigning the site, but the bad news is, it could take a bit of effort in its self. I'd suggest starting with a back link audit.
Have you done much by way of trying to clean up your links?

Thanks Ryan, all valid points (we'd like to redesign the site but thanks to the massive drop in traffic and subsequently sales) are having to hold off. Interesting point about the homepage links, we'll look into that thanks.

A few items I noticed:
1. Your home page has over 300 links. Ideally you should have under 100 but at least keep it under 150.
2. In the center section you have a "B&Bs By Category" block. I am using FF7 and the top three columns are cut off so the last 3 links in each column cannot be seen. I am unsure if this issue exists in all browsers but this could be taken as hidden links and cause you to incur a penalty. Users cannot see all the links.
3. Your home page title is too long and will get cut off. I would suggest just using your site name and save the rest for your meta description.
4. Going back to the links on the page, it is not simply the number of links but how they are presented. The page is basically a big collection of links. It doesn't present a good user experience.
5. The page itself is actually difficult to read. As you look through the various blocks such as "B&B Articles", you offer teasers of 8 different articles and most do not even complete the first sentence before being cut off with ...
From a Panda perspective of a user looking at a quality webpage, the presentation is not good. There is far too much being crammed onto the page. Several of the link blocks should be removed entirely. The blocks which share content such as "Featured B&Bs" and "B&B Special Offers should either contain fewer entries and/or be widened to 1/2 a page rather then 1/3 of a page.
The above is my feedback and would require a significant redesign of the home page. My suggestion would be to try it with A/B testing.

One other (big) change that we made was that the old developers used to pass around a session id for the user on all pages so every time Google came back to the same page, it would get new content. This resulted in Webmaster Tools having over 35M pages for the site (there's about 100k at most). We fixed this issue but we're wondering whether it was actually helping (despite what's recommended)?

Ranking dropped after changing title tag
I recently changed my company's site homepage title tag to make it start with our target keyword. The page was originally at page #7 or #8 and dropped to page #17 directly after I changed the page title. Is this normal? Is it's a temporary drop or should I change it back to the previous title.

How to rank a page on established site quickly
Hi, I'm looking for information about how I can rank an e-commerce category page quickly from a link building perspective. It usually takes me 6-12 months to rank these pages within the top 3 spots with link building, but I would like to get results faster. My site is established for more than 10 years and performs well in Google organic search. Here is what usually works over a 6-12 month time span: 15-40 links within articles on DA 15-60 sites, built within 6-12 months More than 75% of the links are from blogs Variety of anchor text Combination of follow/nofollow Deep links to product pages within the category we're trying to rank Might be important to note that it was easy for us to get category pages listed in DMOZ categories, when it was still around but it didn't seem to play any role in getting ranked faster. Note: We only build links on real sites with real traffic and decent performance metrics. No PBNs or other crap sites. I'd sincerely appreciate it if anyone can make any suggestions or point me towards helpful info. Thanks!

Google can't access/crawl my site!
Hi I'm dealing with this problem for a few days. In fact i didn't realize it was this serious until today when i saw most of my site "de-indexed" and losing most of the rankings. [URL Errors: 1st photo] 8/21/14 there were only 42 errors but in 8/22/14 this number went to 272 and it just keeps going up. The site i'm talking about is gazetaexpress.com (media news, custom cms) with lot's of pages. After i did some research i came to the conclusion that the problem is to the firewall, who might have blocked google bots from accessing the site. But the server administrator is saying that this isn't true and no google bots have been blocked. Also when i go to WMT, and try to Fetch as Google the site, this is what i get: [Fetch as Google: 2nd photo] From more than 60 tries, 2-3 times it showed Complete (and this only to homepage, never to articles). What can be the problem? Can i get Google to crawl properly my site and is there a chance that i will lose my previous rankings? Thanks a lot

Unexplained Drop In Ranking and Traffic-HELP!
I operate a real estate web site in New York City (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com). It was hit by Penguin in April 2012, with search volume falling from 6,800 per month in March 2012 to 3,300 by June 2012. After refreshing content and changing the theme, volume recovered to 4,300 per month in October 2013. There was a big improvement in early October 2013, perhaps tied to a Panda update. In November 2013 I hired an SEO company. They are reputable; on MOZ's recommended list. After following all their suggestions (searching and removing duplicate content, disavowing toxic links, improving the site structure to make it easier for Google to index listings, re-writing ten key landing pages, improving the design of the user interface) ranking and traffic started to decline in April of 2014 and crashed in June 2014 after an upgraded design with improved user interface was launched. Search volume is went from 4700 in March to around 3800 in June. However ranking on the keywords that generate conversions has really declined, and clicks from those terms are down at least 65%. My online business is severely compromised after I have spent almost double the anticipated budget to improve ranking and conversion. A few questions: 1. Could a drop in the number of domains lining to our site have led to this decline? About 30 domains that had toxic links to us agreed to remove them. We had another 70 domains disavowed in late April. We only have 78 domains pointing to our domain now, far less than before (see attached AHREFs image). It seems there is a correlation in the timeline between the number of domains pointing to us and ranking performance. The number of domains pointing to us has never been this low. Could this be causing the drop? My SEO firm believes that the quality of these links are very low and the fact that many are gone is in fact a plus. 2. The number of indexed pages has jumped to 851 from 675 in early June (see attached image from Google Webmaster tools), right after a site upgrade. The number of pages in the site map is around 650. Could the indexation of the extra 175 page somehow have diluted the quality of the site in Google's eyes? We have filed removal request for these pages in Mid June and again last week with Google but they still appear. In 2013 we also launched an upgrade and Google indexed an extra 500 pages (canonical tags were not set up correctly) and search volume and ranking collapsed. Oddly enough when the number of pages indexed by Google fell, ranking improved. I wonder if something similar has occurred. 3. May 2014 Panda update. Many of our URLs are product URLs of listings. They have less than 100 words. Could Google suddenly be penalizing us for that? It is very difficult to write descriptions of hundreds of words for products that change quickly. I would think the Google takes this into account. If someone could present some insight into this issue I would be very, very grateful. I have spent over $25,000 on SEO reports, wireframe design and coding and now find myself in a worse position than when I started. My SEO provider is now requesting that I purchase even more reports for several thousand dollars and I can't afford it, nor can I justify it after such poor results. I wish they would take it upon themselves to identify what went wrong. In any case, if anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it. I am very suspicious that this drop started in earnest at the time of link removal and the disavow and accelerated at the time of the launch of the upgrade. Can a home page penalty cause a drop in rankings for all pages?
All my main keywords have dropped out of the SERPS. Could it be that the home page (the strongest) page has been devalued and therefore 'link juice' that used to spread throughout the site is no longer doing so. Would this cause all other pages to drop? I just can't understand how all my pages have lost rankings. The site is still indexed so there's no problem there.

UK Company Major drop in traffic & rankings on one primary keyword since March
I am helping out a small UK company who have had a sudden drop in organic search traffic since March 24th. Investigation highlights some issues with the site,e.g. Potential canonicalization of home page, a few html errors, some inbound links to the /index.html version of the homepage rather than /. But, nothing particualrly major and nothing that is different to pre-March 24th. The indexed pages looks ok in Google (although Bing is ranking the non-www version of the homepage) but this does not appear in Google's index. Searches for the company name on Google.co.uk show it as top result & some keywords are ranking reasonably well (based on homepage). Selecting blocks of text from the homepage and it ranks #1, but its Google rank for the primary keyword has gone from #2 pre-March 24th to not in the top 100 results since. SEOMOZ is grading the page A for the keyword which appears prominently on the page & keyword is the first characters of the title. It is not a particularly competitive keyword. Adding UK to the keyword and the page is Google.co.uk ranked #3. It's almost as if they are being penalised for a single keyword which I've never seen or heard of before. Any ideas? ** The company has never carried out any SEO - white hat or black hat. The site is perfectly normal, nothing dodgy or concerning about it at all.** Thanks in advance for your advice.

I try to apply best duplicate content practices, but my rankings drop!
Hey, An audit of a client's site revealed that due to their shopping cart, all their product pages were being duplicated. http://www.domain.com.au/digital-inverter-generator-3300w/ and http://www.domain.com.au/shop/digital-inverter-generator-3300w/ The easiest solution was to just block all /shop/ pages in Google Webmaster Tools (redirects were not an easy option). This was about 3 months ago, and in months 1 and 2 we undertook some great marketing (soft social book marking, updating the page content, flickr profiles with product images, product manuals onto slideshare etc). Rankings went up and so did traffic. In month 3, the changes in robots.txt finally hit and rankings decreased quite steadily over the last 3 weeks. Im so tempted to take off the robots restriction on the duplicate content.... I know I shouldnt but, it was working so well without it? Ideas, suggestions?

Well Ranked National Site - Need Local Rankings
We are a virtual company doing business in 30 states nationwide. All our business is done via the phone, fax, email and express mail. Back in 2008 I optimized our small 8 page website for our key terms and was able to rank the site #1 nationally for our main keywords. (I did a 6 month consulting gig for the company). The site remained #1 in Google until last year when some serious competitors entered the space and knocked us down to the middle of page one. Then with the Panda update #1 & #2 we have seen our traffic drop 50% mostly due to not receiving the City + Keywords rankings any more. I have now been hired full time to bring us back but my question is this Do I need to build out city specific pages on the existing website? Do I need to buy keyword specific domains and create microsites? Do a combination of both? I would love to do both but I have to prioritize my efforts. Any thoughts would be great.
