Does Local SEO affect international ranking ability?
-
I'm 90% sure that local SEO doesn't have an affect on international rankings (it doesn't logically make sense that it would) but I wondered if someone could verify that assertion for me, either from experience or by pointing me in the direction of a resource/article that states it.
Have searched high and low but can't find anything
thanks

Hi James, you're welcome, am glad to have helped. I agree it's important to maintain your current US rankings as your target audience are initially in the US (before they travel over here on vacation). ~ To cater for local search in London on your existing website, I'd suggest creating a Local page for 'London Tours' or similar. Within this page, include some local content, such as a local address of a booking office if you have one, a local telephone number, some content based around the location of these tours, such as the West End, Westminster... Make sure that this page can be easily navigated to from the homepage. Inbound links from other local businesses, review sites etc will help the page to get noticed and recognised as an authoritative page for London tours. If you can include this new local page as a listing in Google Places that will likely help, you should be able to as the business really does operate from the location of London, those local details will be essential for this. ~ Hope some of that may help you further. Regards, Simon

Hi Simon,
Thanks for the detailed answer, very helpful.
If I can give you a specific example, it would be great to get your thoughts:
I work for a London based tour company. Our main market is in the US (and our server is hosted there, which I am loathed to change as our rankings there are good).
We want to optimise for local search on 'london tours' but without affecting our US rankings. We'll use all the standard local ranking factors, but our server will remain in the US. Can you see any specific issues around us wanting to rank for local searches but on a primarily international basis?
thanks

Hi James
The short answer is 'yes and no'.
Solely Local SEO doesn't usually affect International SEO at face value, as local is local and international is everywhere, as I think you already know from your question description (though read on below...)
However, just about any aspect of SEO can affect the SEO of a webpage and a website from the overall bigger perspective. There are lots of common factors between local and international SEO, as well as some differences. For one website that is trying to cater for both, there will be compromises to be made in some instances, plus some advanced SEO to take care of too.
You'll find http://searchengineland.com/local-seo-international-seo-have-lots-in-common-47937 an interesting and helpful read on this topic.
An example, an IP Address can have a different effect on local SEO efforts than International efforts (i.e. location of where the website is hosted).
There are language differences, user behaviour differences...
I'd suggest reading that article and then figure out who you're targeting, where and how. The answer could end up in needing more than 1 website, subdomains for different geo-locations, a site/cms language translator...
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Is having a Video important for SEO or is it the time-on-site that's important?
Assuming it's a relevant video, is having a video on your landing page considered a good SEO tactic in and of itself? Meaning, when google crawls the page, will they say "good job, there's a video here." Or is having a video on your landing page something that helps you improve on other ranking factors like increased time on site? So, it would not be the video itself google "likes" but rather the increased User Experience factors that went up. (Crossing my fingers I explained this well enough) Thanks for any input, Ruben

Link building to Google+ profile: any local SEO value?
Has anyone found value in building links to Google+ profile for local seo rankings? My gut tells me that it will, but I am not 100% sure. If it does, then does that mean that all the traditional SEO factors that would go into ranking a site organically also work for ranking locally for certain keywords? So far, I have found that the best thing for moving up rankings is reviews on Google+, but then does that make local SEO (from a high view point) just a race for high reviews and building the most citation? I am feeling like the differentiator for local SEO is UN-structured citations and links to Google+ profiles. Any thoughts? See you at MozCon!

How do you know if you are listed in google+ local?
OK This Google+ local and Google places merge is confusing. My first question is how do you know if your company is listed in Google+ local? I've done a search in Google Plus (logged in with another gmail account) but couldn't find my company on the results. Second question is that I am also not able to be found in maps.google.com, is this related? Thanks

Does the canonical imply a wrost thing in terms of SEO?
Hello, I am wondering if the canonical warning should be seen as something wrong in terms of SEO and Google, and therefore the similar contentatr pages must be eliminated to only one page, or if the canonical could be mantained, Thx a lot Antonio

Confused about Google+ Local vs Google Places
If you're doing SEO for a new local business that currently does not have a Google Places listing (or a Google+ Local page), do you have to set up both for them? Or do you simply create the Google Places listing and wait for Google to merge it to a Google+ Local page? I am so confused!

Local directories
I was wondering if there is a comprehensive list somewhere of places I should enter in my business information. I have done the usual google places, city search, yahoo, and many others. i have just been cruising for places to enter my information, and I am sure I have missed some.

Backlinks & local search?
I'm aware that local search is mostly based on citations, and how well your Google places page is optimized, and the landing pages are optimized. But I was wondering if anyone could tell me if backlinks have any relevance in the local search results? And if they do, how much would you say the impact the local search results? could you estimate a % of total value? Also if they do, does it help to have backlinks that point at your places page urls? or should the backlinks just point at your places page landing pages?
