Hi Gareth,
I've worked at Distilled working almost exclusively on link building for a year, have spoken multiple times on link building, and have had a chance to run into the link building work of several people and agencies.
There are a lot of good link building companies and it may depend on your needs.
I can throw out a few names.
SEER Interactive - A nice sized agency run by Wil Reynolds. He's really well know for his great and creative link building presentations as various conferences. They have a team that includes a number of really solid link builders which should be more famous than they are. I'll say that when I went in-house, Wil's team is one of the first I pinged to talk strategy.
Citation Labs - Garrett French runs Citation Labs. I've never worked with him personally, but I've chatted with him. I've heard good things about his work.
Distilled - This is where I use to work. I'm a little bias and would say 3 months ago, it had great link building.
My good friend Adria recently took a position there running the outreach. She's a great link builder and I recommend working with her. If you want to work with the UK office, I'd try to snag Paddy Moogan. If you're in the US, I'd try to snag Geoff, he's done some really solid infographic work. I made my first infographic with him.
Blue Glass - Bigger agency and I've heard good things about them from some close personal friends, but never seen their work.
Russ Hudgens - Good guy, really smart. I've never worked with him, but been on a panel with him, had drinks with him, and poked around some of his sites enough to see his work. He has some really creative and smart strategies.
Slingshot - I've work with them before with a client. They do some really interesting work and have a solid system for scalable link building. I've hung out with them at a few conferences, really fun team.
Outspoken Media - I've also worked with this team with a client. Rhea is amazing and I really like their entire team. They have a strong content based link building program and snag some really high quality links.
Kris Roadruck (Search Fanatics) - Previously at Click2Rank, Kris does some impressive scalable link building work. I've seen some of his work get solid results in highly competitive niches.
Virante - I haven't worked with them before, but I met some of their team in Boston. They sound like they do some really creative work, especially around linkbait type work. Some of the things I learned from them inspired some things I pushed for while at Distilled.

If you're going to blog, focus on keywords!! Pick some keyword that gets a tiny bit of traffic to focus your blog entries on! That way you may end up ranking for long tails without doing any backlinking, but even if that doesn't happen, each page will be keyword targeted for your linkbuilding efforts down the road.

Hi Gareth,
You're welcome. Unique Content for each website; yes, absolutely. Unique, relevant, useful, interesting content can make for excellent link bait, makes the link building efforts much easier and more successful.
As for linking tips, use the SEOmoz link analysis tool and the competitor analysis tool to help identify existing links that can be improved (eg. find existing links with poor anchor text and try and get it changed to include keywords) plus to identify good quality sites that link to the competitors which would be ideally suited to have a link from. Online PR can also help to gain some valuable links, as can creating and distributing different types of content such as Infographics. Hope that helps

I have a tip (as a newbie to this SEO dark magik) Blog, blog, blog. No matter how much I try and influence keywords through linking, the quickest way is blogging but its hard work. do it every day and the engines will love you for it providing the content is pertinent. The use social networks to post the headlines. Not really the answer you are looking for but if you can do it you should do it.

Hi Si,
Great response thanks mate!
When you talk about content do you mean producing unique content for each website you wish to obtain links from?
Thanks for the response..
Is there any linking tips you can help me with to aid SEO?
Thanks
Gareth

You need to see if the vendor has any innovative approach for link building. Make sure they are transparent on the process they are going to implement for your site.
Don't decide based on the existing clients. You might have read the story about JC Penny. The vendor that provided services to JC Penny is still doing business with fortune companies.

Hi Gaz
There probably are, though I find it difficult to make such a recommendation when it's my strong belief that Link Building should be a part of an integrated search & content campaign rather than outsourced as a standalone task.
The best links are almost always free (natural) links obtained as a part of producing some really valuable content and distributing it well. This can often be done in-house easily (resource dependent of course). Though it does take time to seed, distribute and promote content, which is where an agency can come in handy by assisting with this as a part of a bigger search & content campaign (an on-going campaign that is).
If you really are intent on outsourcing link building specifically though, or even as a part of a larger project, I'd suggest searching for an agency that is in fairly close proximity (within acceptable travelling distance that is), by searching initially to draw up a short-list of contenders, then evaluate them from checking out their clients' sites, rankings etc and asking for authentic testominials from the shortened short-list. That's in addition to all the usual evaluation criteria of course.
Regards
Simon

We are moving to HTTPS and wanted to know if our link building efforts were in vain or will the link juice pass to HTTPS?
We are switching to HTTPS and want to make sure the links we've gotten in the past will still transfer since they are pointing to HTTP? I'd hate to go back through and ask people to please add an s to the link.

Link building for big webite. 2500+ posts.
We run a big kids website: http://mocomi.com/ and have over 2500+ posts. Its about 2 years old now. No SEO was done on this site until the last two months when I was hired for SEO. I divided the SEO into 2 parts - on-page and off-page SEO. For the last 1.5 months I did the on-page fixing - correcting URLs, optimizing posts with best keywords, adding meta titles and descriptions to each post, 301 redirects etc. Now that on-page optimization is over, I have to do the off-page thing - build links. But with so much content I'm confused on how should I go forward. Among the 2500 posts I have listed down 700 posts that have real traffic potential so I'm planning to build links to these. But 700 is a huge number which includes our home page, 50+ category pages and rest are posts. So the question is how should I build links to these? Should I pick up each page and build links to it and move to next or as some people suggested, build most links to home page and category pages and that'll pass pagerank to my posts and help them rank. What link building plan would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

Got a link building question here
I've been doing a lot of back link analysis on my competitors and noticed that a lot of links are coming from wordpress.com, blog.com, blogspot.com, etc blogs. These are free blogs in the format of http://www.username.blogplatform.com. These individual blogs seem to have product reviews and mentions for many different products (we are an e-commerce website). I would like to know if anyone has done any outreach to the owners of the third party blogs. This looks very different from guest blogging and I want to know if there is a way to reach out to these blog owners in order for them to write something about our products. Please let me know if anyone had any success with this, Thank you

Looking to outsource some of our link building...
Hi Everyone, We are a small online marketing firm in the UK and we are starting to hit a bit of a bottleneck in terms of the resources that we have that can be devoted to link building. As a result, we need to outsource the link building for some of our clients (around 10). Obviously, we only want ethical, white hat link building to take place and it really is a focus on quality rather than quantity. As you can imagine, being a fairly small firm, we also have a very limited budget! We would ideally like to work with UK link builders but would definitely look at overseas partnerships if it worked out more cost effective and the standard of the link building meets our standards. Just so that I'm not wasting anyone's time, we have a budget of around £200-300 for this (I know, its a very limited budget!). I understand that with this budget comes limitations so we would be more than willing at looking at some stripped down packages (for example, we already have in-house bloggers, so we wouldn't need that). Let me know if you are interested or if you would be able to recommend anyone to me. It would be a great help. Matt

Are the following considered bad links for Link Building.
I've been doing a lot of research lately on link building & I've read a lot about having a diverse amount of links. Social links, Blog links, comment links, footer links, No follow links, Directory links as well as links with Anchor text URL match, brand match, partial brand match, non-descriptive, and with keywords. But there is a lot of talk of removing those links that look like a site that's built just for link building purposes.... but Directories are basically built for link building are they not? I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they feel links from the following directories would be bad links. (Non-Paid) http://www.yoganza.com http://www.wkool.com http://www.wee-directory.com http://www.voicelet.com www.hotfrog.ca http://www.webdirectorieslist.com http://multiplelistingboard.com http://mozdirectory.net http://freedirectorypr.info Industry specific below: http://bestautolinks .com http://automotivedome.com http://automobilebuzz.com http://craigsautolinks.com Thanks so much for the help!

Where do I find the best link building company?
Hi there, I'm trying to find an ethical, honest, link building company. We don't want links on shady forums, or comment spam, or any of that black hat nastyness!. I want links, on proper sites, and I'm prepared to pay for them accordingly. We're also more than happy to write/have written/ quality content that can be linked to. (We already pump out about 15 x 400+ word, optimised blogs weeks) We spend hours on the various social media sites also. So I think the only thing we're really missing now, is decent backlinks and possibly some more long tail keywords... Over to you guys. Paul.

Link building and directory links to a new site
I have three new sites all hosted on the same server in the same public html folder and each site is in a different folder inside the public html folder. These sites are a listing of live music venues in different cities in Texas. Should I link these sites together to increase page rank to each other and also put key search phrases in the anchor text and place these links in the text in the center of each page of each site to make the links more effective? Also, because the sites are about a year old they don't have many inlinks yet. If i submit them to about 50 directories will Google not like this because there are way more directory links than natural links? I've been told that it is trouble to have more than about 50% directory links compared to natural links. Thanks in advance for your answers! Take care,

Link building outsource advice
I have been limping along doing link building myself for several months now. Creating relationships, asking for links, writing some articles and press. So far, decent results, but I need to take it to another level. I used SubmitEdge's 400 manual directory submission product, but still not seeing many links coming from it. So, I would like to hire an onshore SEO to help me with link building. After getting several quotes from reputable companies, I found the process very frustrating. I know this business is not about guarentees, but they all want $600-$1000 per month for a fairly open ended service. All they tell me is that they will submit to directories, social media sites, shopping sites, and some niche sites. No guarentees of how many (or what quality) of links I'll get, or even how much time they even plan to spend. Any suggestions on what I should expect? and any suggestion companies?
