Google Places for Mobile Businesses in many cities
-
How do you set up Google Places account for mobile businesses where the drivers get calls from their homes and service customers in their respective cities?
The problem is, the drivers don't want to list their home address as their business address, yet they still represent a service for a particular city.
Any ideas?

Hi Again OCsearch,
If they've got just one office, then yes, having one Place Page would be an accurate representation of the business. I sympathize with how inadequate a solution this is for clients with business models like your client's. The alternative to this is for the business to change the way it thinks about its employees and assign one in each district as a sub-branch of the business. Let me explain this a little more thoroughly:
-
Let's say the business is located in San Francisco. They create and claim a Place Page for their home office.
-
Then, let's also say that the business sends out truckers from Los Angeles, San Jose, Sacramento and San Diego.
-
Let's say that the business is willing to create a new position for one employee in each of those cities - let's call him the city manager.
-
The city manager's duties involve overseeing the job assignments for each of the truckers in his city. And, his home address is now viewed as a local office for the main company. He is given a unique local area code phone number and mail relating to operations in his city is now to be directed to his home instead of the company headquarters in San Francisco.
-
If this were the business model, then I think it would be conceivable for each city manager to have his own Place Page for his sub-branch of the company.
It's a big workaround, but not an impossible one.
Barring this, then, yes...one Place Page for the main office and the rest of your work will have to be organic. And, the client should understand that he should not expect to outrank businesses with physical addresses in other cities.
Does this explanation help? I hope so!

Hi Erica,
It is my understanding that any address which is not a legitimate street address is prohibited and this would include UPS addresses. This has become especially problematic in parts of the country where mail has never or is no longer being directly delivered. I have heard from business owners in Colorado and Maine who live in such communities and they are out of luck. I find this to be a very unsatisfactory oversight on Google's part. They are excluding legitimate businesses because of the way the post office functions in many, many places. Perhaps we will one day see a fix from them for this.
What qualifies right now as a legitimate local street address is one to which customers can come to do business or one from which the company goes out to its customers. So, this automatically rules out any type of box because no one is working in the box
How good is Google at catching companies that bend this rule? Not terribly, but once they get onto a violation, they act swiftly and the offending business has little recourse to right things beyond requesting re-inclusion which is an iffy bet.
Hope this helps to further clarify things!

The problem is they has some sort of business that send outs drivers all over the state of California. So I guess what you're saying is that they should just do one place account for their main office and call it quits eh?
-
Do you know if they're also filtering out UPS addresses? My nonprofit has essentially a PO Box at a UPS store, but it has an actual address (looks like an apartment address).

Hi Ocsearch,
Keri is correct. The use of P.O. boxes and virtual offices is prohibited by Google's Places Quality Guidelines which you can read in full here:
http://www.google.com/support/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528
Here is the portion of the guidelines that speak specifically to your query:
Business Location: Use a precise, accurate address to describe your business location.
- Do not create listings at locations where the business does not physically exist. P.O. Boxes are not considered accurate physical locations. Listings submitted with P.O. Box addresses will be removed.
- Use the precise address for the business in place of broad city names or cross-streets.
- Do not create more than one listing for each business location, either in a single account or multiple accounts.
- Businesses that operate in a service area, as opposed to a single location, should not create a listing for every city they service. Businesses that operate in a service area should create one listing for the central office or location and designate service areas. Learn how to add service areas to your listing.
- Businesses with multiple specializations, such as law firms and doctors, should not create multiple listings to cover all of their specialties. You may create one listing per practitioner, and one listing for the hospital or clinic at large.
- Do not include information in address lines that does not pertain your business’s physical location (e.g. URLs, keywords).
So, basically, the business in question needs to make a critical decision: will they be willing to publish a legitimate address in order to receive the benefits of participating in Google Places? If not, then Google will not consider them to be appropriate for their index.
Hope this helps!

Yeah I always thought this was a bad spammy idea...
-
Google really frowns on the PO boxes these days. I believe there are ways to indicate service areas. I'm flagging this question for one of our local experts to come in and comment.
-
Get a P.O. box or a "virtual office" in each city. That's the only way I know to work around this issue. Also, if one driver quits you can still keep the same address for Google Maps - just change the phone number.

Shared location and phone number in Google Places...what now?
Interesting conundrum I've run into with a legal site we've recently started working on. The client didn't initially tell us that their law office shares an address and a phone number with another firm. It didn't take long for us to find this out, but interestingly, it didn't seem to be negatively impacting their rankings...at first. Then as we got into June we simply fell out of the map listings. We occasionally resurface back to a 1-3 position and then disappear again. My presumption is that Google is having trouble deciding if either of our separate listings are legitimate as there are a lot of citations for each and the on site and off site SEO/link factors are fairly similar (with our site having a bit better link profile). So my thought is get a unique phone number (if I can make the client agree) and add a unique suite number and try to reclaim/edit every existing citation we can get our hands on. Anyone else run into a similar problem and beat it?

Old location in Google Places/Google Local
So I started at my company around six months ago. I claimed the company's Google+ page, and have been actively updating it. I also took the step of claiming the company's location in Google Places as well (yes, I know Google is shutting down Google Places in favor of Google+, but I figured it was a logical step to take anyway). Here's my dilemma: the company moved locations 2-3 years ago. That old location is still appearing in Google Places, and it also has its own Google+ page. Is there a recommended way to redirect that old location to our new office in Google Places and Google+?

New Local Tracking Number for Places vs an 800 Number.
I am having a problem with local search for my business. I submitted the same NAP (Name, Address, Phone) info to Google Places as I have submitted via LocalEZE and Universal Business Listing. Here is the issue. The local number that is being used does not have any way to track calls, meaning the phone company (xo communications) does not give us the number of incoming calls. To add call tracking to the local numbers through our PBX system is very expensive, $2000 per store. Also to transfer this local number to a call tracking company (like callsource or whoiscalling) is a lot of trouble and not an option either. I need to track the call count somehow so I have two options left. 1) Get a new local number (that is also a tracking number through a phone tracking company) and then submit this to Google Places, LocalEZE and Universal Business Listing. The issue with this is that all of our citations will be re-set with a new local number, basically we'd have to do local SEO all over again. 2) Use the main 800 number in Google Places, this can be tracked. However, then our local number is on all of the NAP citations and Google Places will be the only web property with an 800 number. What are your thoughts?

Google Places - Category Question
Hi All. Just wanted to double check something with you folks. I've always been under the impression that you should complete the first category option in Places with a default category from Google's list of options, followed by 4 categories of your choice. However, does the 1st category need to be a default option or can it be any one of the 5? Also, do you think anything is gained in the rankings by adding a category of your own choice as the 1st category? There's nothing in the Quality guidelines that suggests the 1st category needs to be a default option, so I thought I'd throw this out there... http://www.google.com/support/places/bin/answer.py?answer=107528

Multiple Businesses in One Location + In One Google Places Account Under Review
HI, My Problem: Multiple businesses in one location, under one Google Places account, one being reviewed. My Question: see very bottom of this post Background: I am trying to help a client get both of his businesses ranking in Google Places. The problem is the office building has multiple doctors/practices in the same building and gave no business suite numbers to doctors that rent office space. Here is the list of the other businesses in the office: http://www.fullcirclefamilycare.com/health_care.htm. The problem escalates because the doctor I am trying to help has a chiropractic business & a spinal decompression business, both legal entities, both different registered company names, different phone numbers, and websites, but both located in this office building. He rents two offices (they should be suites) in the building. The problem escalates even more because the doctor has registered both locations (see below) in his Google Places account: Westchester Spinal Decompression Center

jointeffortchiro.com The first (spinal decompression) was registered a long time ago and ranks #1 for "spinal decompression white plains NY." The second he just confirmed the Google Post card a few weeks ago and has been under review since. More research so you can help me better: The "The Shop for Holistic Health / The Shop at Full Circle", a businesses location in the same office building has verified their account and ranks #1 for "women's health care white plains NY" and "midwife white plains NY." Another business,in the same office building "Keras-Donaghy Melissa S", has not claimed their listing and ranks #1 for "Women’s Health physical Therapist white plains NY" Another business, "Kuhl Josephine MD," has not claimed their listing ranks in the top 10 for "Adolescent Psychiatrist white plains NY." My Question: What do I do, wait it out and see if Google will remove the "under review" under his current Google Places account or do I add a suite number now and see if Google will send another post card? Or do I create a new account, add the business, add a suite number this time, and see if they will confirm it. I don't want to do this because the doctor already has 12 reviews on this Google Places account. If I do do this, what do I do with the Google Places account under review?0 -
Google Places and Multiple Locations
Hi, I have a client with 3 different physical locations but only 1 phone number for his business. Does anyone know if Google Places will penalize me for duplicate listings due to having the same phone number or will I be ok if I have a different physical addresses per listing? Thanks, -Carlos
