Appropriate SEO strategies for a website's own SERPs?
-
Hello all,
What are good on-page SEO practices for the search result pages on our own sites? For instance, what page titles do you use? Do you include page numbers? Meta-descriptions? Headers? Keyword utilization?
This is a consideration for us as we link to some popular search results on our sites.
Thanks!

Gotcha! I say those pages should be excluded via robots.txt. Build static landing pages for any keyword term you wish to rank for and optimize those. Or rather than build a new page, take the top result of a search for keyword site:yourdomain.com, which will tell you what page already ranks highest for that target phrase, and and use that for your landing page for a term; optimize on page and build internal and external links to the page for the term.

Google's Webmaster Guidelines at http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769 states "Use robots.txt to prevent crawling of search results pages or other auto-generated pages that don't add much value for users coming from search engines."
So, they frown on having search result pages in the index in the first place.

That's a really great point, and thanks for the "Good Answer!" I particularly appreciate the duplicate content point.
What are your thoughts on the matter if the popular searches are not created automatically (e.g., could include "kitten" and "kittens" because those are perfectly reasonable search terms) but rather created manually? They reflect broad categories to help provide search engines a way of seeing important items, along with a site map. (All this is, regretfully, in lieu of a proper browse functionality that will require a bit more work given how the data is structured). Search pages would then reflect only orthogonal terms, such as "kitten" "puppy" "guppy" etc, so they are (at least as far as I can think) unlikely to produce duplicate result pages.
That's only my uninformed, amateur strategy. What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

The best practice is to not let your internal search get indexed. Use no-index,follow so that Google can follow any links on the page, but doesn't place your search pages in the index.
Reason why: duplicate content
How different is a search for "kitten" going to be from the search "kittens" on your website? Probably pretty exact. However, they will possess two different url's. Ta-da! Duplicate content! Not to mention:
Kittie, Kitty, Kitties, cute kittens, funny kittens, black kittens, grey kittens, cat, cats, etc.
For proof, go check out your google analytics, how many different ways are people finding you right now?

I would ask the question, "What makes the most sense to the end user?" The reason I would ask this question is because I have a strong feeling that this is the same question that search engines are asking and overall trying to achieve.
I suggest following Google, Bing, and Yahoo as an example, they have the same title for each page. If I search "Christmas Decorations" in each of those engines, the title of the page is just "Christmas Decorations" no matter how deep I go. At the top of each page they let me know which page or which set of results I am looking at.

Thanks, M.-J.!
Yes, I am not concerned about optimizing my content pages for my search engine. Rather, I am concerned with optimizing my search engine result pages for Google/Bing/Yahoo.
For instance, suppose the page title was:
"kitten - Search Results | MyCompany.com"
What should page 2 of these results be?
"kitten - Search Results | Page 2 | MyCompany.com"
I ask because it seems that linking to popular searches on my own search engine seems like a reasonable strategy to help Google crawl a site and find content. What are the best on-page strategies?
I have consistently used page numbers on a site when I had multi-page articles and either my CMS or authors were unwilling/unable to create an appropriate page title for each subsequent page. (e.g, "My article title | MyCompany.com" and "My article title | Page 2 | MyCompany.com")
Thoughts?

I would not be concerned with optimizing for internal search. You want to optimize for Google, Bing and Yahoo. The Learn SEO files here on SEOMoz should give you the basics, and you might find it very helpful to use the on page analysis tool to go over the basic onsite optimization factors.
Not sure I have ever used a page number on a site, though I do see sites that use them when they have a string of say, affiliate pages ... a way to answer this question is to ask: how will it help the visitor to my site?

Using Escaped Fragments with SEO
Our e-commerce platform is in the process of changing to what we call app based stores (essentially running in a browser as single page web-app) With these new stores they are being built in HTML 5 and using escaped fragments.
On-Page Optimization | | marketing_zoovy.com
Currently merchants are usually running 2 stores until we launch to app site at 100%. My questions are really concerning the app stores which right now show on a subdomain but will essentially take over the primary domain. Here is an example:
app.tikimater.com and app.sportsworld.com Since I am not a developer, I'm really having a hard time understanding the escaped fragments. I'm using this but https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/docs/getting-started I'm not sure what my actual urls should look like and what the canonical should be set to. Right now they have been removed but previously they had http:app.tikimaster.com#!v=1 Also, and how I should be setting up my meta information for Google so 1) pages are indexed timely 2) pages are indexed with the correct information. I am still setting the meta titles and descriptions but in some instances Google uses other info. With the new platform we are moving away from on page content (written paragraphs) but category pages would have related products embedded. Should I still be pushing to have some type of intro text, since it would solely be for SEO and not the shoppers experience. All product pages have content (product description etc) Thank you for any advice0 -
Product Descriptions & SEO
I got another small question for my price comparison website that I run 🙂 An example product from my site, to which this question relates http://goo.gl/XDTUNs I have about 600 products which I track, and the product description I have for each is as follows; Paragraph 1 - Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Easily compare prices below on a XXX" Paragraph 2 = Blatant, 100% copy of the product description from Amazon Paragraph 3 - Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Always read your chosen stores product description before buying your XXX" Firstly, I am now on a mission to create unique descriptions instead of the Amazon ones I foolishly copied. My question is, are the standard paragraph 1 and 3 which are in all my product ok? Or should this be avoided? Should my unique description be paragraph 1, or can it remain in the middle? The reason for the three separate paragraphs was so I could mention to keyword 3 times, which is what is suggested on the Moz page grader. Thanks so much!

Schema.org for news websites?
So as of late I have been on something of a mission to mark up my news website with as much accurate and detailed Schema and Open Graph data as possible, in order to not only allow the search engines to understand my content properly, but also to ensure everything appears in the most ideal fashion when linked to from Facebook, Google+, etc. Here is an example of a typical article page: http://www.nerdscoop.net/technology/video-games-459 As you'll see I currently have news posts marked up as article because that is essentially exactly what they are, but is there a better way to emphasise that they are news rather than just generic articles? My second question is regarding the category pages and the home page. How would be best to mark these up? With OG the task is fairly simple, because I can specify the homepage as being a website, but not so with Schema from what I can see. Either way, this is an interesting subject to me and I look forward to any discussion as a result. Thanks for looking.

Using meta robots 'noindex'
Alright, so I would consider myself a beginner at SEO. I've been doing merchandising and marketing for Ecommerce sites for about a year and a half now and am just now starting to attempt to apply some intermediate SEO techniques to the sites I work on so bear with me. We are currently redoing the homepage of our site and I am evaluating what links to have on it. I don't want to lose precious link juice to pages that don't need it, but there are certain pages that we need to have on the homepage that people just won't search for. My question is would it be a good move to add the meta robots 'noindex' tag to these pages? Is my understanding correct that if the only link on the page is back to the homepage it will pass back the linkjuice? Also, how many homepage links are too many? We have a fairly large ecommerce site with a lot of categories we'd like to feature, but don't want to overdo the homepage. I appreciate any help!

Do you ever forget the SEO basics?
We all get a little sloppy at times. Just yesterday , someone pointed out that I accidentally blocked the robots from one of our primary pages, because it was being included in a wildcard match on one of the disallow commands in robots.txt. Sometimes the mistakes are very basic. The one below is just too funny. I thought I would share the love. Search Google for "MD care" MD Care Inc. - Welcome<a id="LXPLSS_979677678U1">
On-Page Optimization | | irvingw</a> <cite>www.mdcarehealthplan.com/</cite> This is an SEO description that will be seen by the search engines and used in the search results. The meta keywords tag is even funnier: <meta name="keywords" content="spam, the, keywords, here, like, this, and this, good" />

Is it good to have dashes in url's
When using keywords in url's for internal pages, isn't it a good idea to use dashes or underscores in the url between the keywords?
