A keyword suddenly dropping 25 positions in Gooogle
-
Hello,
One of my clients have a new website (just 3 months old) and for some keywords it's already working quite well (some of them already on first page for organic search results in Google).
But suddenly one of the keywords (just one) dropped 25 positions from one day to another, while the rest of them are ok and even getting better.
What may be happening here? The only thing I have done for this keyword different to the rest is that I have created a few internal links (just 7 o using the keyword. The site is big, with around 60 pages including a blog.
I know that I'm not being very explicit with the information I'm providing...
Thank you in advance for your help!

Thanks a lot for all your responses, they have been of great value.
I'm getting the info about the keyword behaviour from Seomozpro campaign. The same keyword has gone up 10 positions this week without doing anything, so it's quite strange this going-down-going-up without any aparent reason...
Maybe it's going up to its previous position? Let's see..
Thanks a lot for all your help!

I have had exactly the same problem with a clients site just one particular word totally going off the rankings ? I am going to check the client hasn't been changing any of the page titles.

Just want to add a short note on the issue with logging out of google to see the search results correctly. If you use Chrome as a browser i would recommend the add on called "SEO SERP" - it gives you the search result for a keyword on a selected area (.com, .uk, .dk or whatever) and list the sites you wish to see positions for. Great add on which i use daily.

An awesome answer from Ryan, very comprehensive.
The only thing I'd add is that moving forwards as the site matures, only be concerned with Average Monthly Rankings & Visitor Numbers, rather than a ranking at one particular point in time.
This is because rankings often fluctuate so much, and there will always be changes and movement going on; look at the monthly reports and respond to those when need-be rather than daily movements, this will save a fair amount of time to spend on other areas such as content & distribution.
All the best and regards,
Simon

With a single keyword drop on a new site there are many possibilities to investigate. A few ideas:
-
Any change on the page can affect the rankings. For example a title change alone can lead to a major climb or fall in rankings.
-
Any change to the site can affect a keyword's rankings. Many sites use common navigation, footers and sidebars throughout the site. Changes impact how PR flows throughout the site and can have a large impact on rankings.
-
You mentioned the site is about 90 days old. New web pages receive a boost in rankings. Google rewards fresh content in that manner. After a brief period, the boost is removed and the page settles down to it's normal ranking position.

I suggest checking the rankings from another pc and/or browser you do not normally use. Google offers personalized rankings when you are logged in. Even when you log out, your browser has a lot of information such as your location and browsing history which can be used to customize search results. You can add &pws=0 to the end of your query, but another option is using another pc. The bottom line, the search results you are viewing may be quite different from the results others see.

Google may adjust your rankings based on numerous factors such as the statistics they have collected on your site. Bounce rate, time on page / site, click-through-rate and other factors measure how users interact with your site. If Google feels users are not happy with the result for the keyword, they may adjust accordingly.
I hope these ideas offer you a few things to investigation.
PS. "The site is big, with around 60 pages..." As an fyi, a site with 60 pages is generally considered a small site. When you say "big" site, I think of 10k+ page sites.

Optimize homepage or category for main keyword?
Hello, we have an advertisements website. Usually in each country we have this one "main" keyword which has the largest amount of searches. Now we have done both ways in different markets. Sometimes optimize the homepage www.example.com for the keyword, sometimes optimize **www.example.com/thekeyword **the category page. I do not have solid data which works better, as Keyword difficulties are too big to compare. The good thing with category is that i would have internal links pointing to it and keyword in the url. Questions: 1. Which do you recommend better?

Site dropped from SERP
Hello, I've been ranking a site for the last 5 months with good success, ranking on the first page for a high traffic keyword. In the beginning of September however, my site completely dropped out of the SERPs for several of those keywords yet my site was still indexed and there was no penalty applied to my site via search console. I would assume this maybe because of the update during the time.My site came back again a week later and it was ranking much higher on the first page (#2). Today, I just checked the SERPs and my site is now gone again. It was there this morning but now as of two hours ago it is gone, as well as one of my main competitors. My site is still indexed and no penalties via search console. Does anyone know what causes these types of issues? Im assuming my site will come back in a week or so with hopefully the same or better ranking, but when I have disruptions like this it really hurts my organic traffic. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Why blocking a subfolder dropped indexed pages with 10%?
Hy Guys, maybe you can help me to understand better: on 17.04 I had 7600 pages indexed in google (WMT showing 6113). I have included in the robots.txt file, Disallow: /account/ - which contains the registration page, wishlist, etc. and other stuff since I'm not interested to rank with registration form. on 23.04 I had 6980 pages indexed in google (WMT showing 5985). I understand that this way I'm telling google I don't want that section indexed, by way so manny pages?, Because of the faceted navigation? Cheers

Sudden drop in website ranking
Since past 2 week my website www.micromaxtablet.in is experiencing sudden drops in the site ranking. I can understand this regression in the site ranking is not because of Goggle Panda update, and their is some other reason. Kindly let me know what could be the other possibilities, and plz also suggest how to get it fixed. Keyword for which the site had the best rankings (in top 3) was "micromax tablet". Now it shows on the second page in the google search and to make it worse, it's losing its position almost every second day.

Rankings drop in UK and AU but not US
After the last Panda update on Jan. 22 my rankings dropped significantly in the AU and UK but not in the US. We operate in UK and AU and not the US so if anything the rankings should be the opposite (which also obviously would be preferred) Any ideas for why this would occur?

Sudden drop in rankings
Hi there, I've been working on this site for three or four months (it was a brand new site), and we were seeing some really great improvements in rankings. I've concentrated on writing lots of good quality content and building a network of links through blogging and social networks. Then, last weekend (6th October), we got completely wiped off of the results. We went from rankings 2,3 and 4 for our target terms to not being in the top 100. I assumed we'd been given a penalty from Google as we'd been SEOing too hard and removed a reciprocal links page we had and asked Google to reconsider. I just got a message back saying there hasn't been any manual penalty, so it's just down to the algorithm. I'm running am SEOMoz analysis, but so far it's just coming up with things like page titles too long and too many links on pages, which I can fix, but don't seem like something that would completely destroy us so abruptly. I think we really have the most and best content on the subject of becoming a model, which has taken a great deal of effort to put tgether, so this is crushing. If anybody can shed any light, I'll be extremely grateful, and I'd be interested to knwo if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Thanks in advance! URL: www.modellingadvice. info Kat

What is the best SEO URL design for keywords with a period?
Quick question, Assume my keyword is the German soccer team "1.FC Nuremberg". What is the best URL design to target that keyword? domainname.com/1fc-nuremberg or domainname.com/1-fc-nuremberg Any thoughts? Does it make - even a tiny - difference? /Thomas
