How to handle a server outage if I have two sites
-
I operate a web application. It consists of two sites, www.mysite.com and app.mysite.com. As you might imagine, www is used for marketing purposes, and it's our main organic search entry point. The app.mysite.com domain is where our application portal is for customers, and it is also where our login and registration pages are located.
Currently, www.mysite.com is experiencing a catastrophic outage and is returning 504 errors, but app.mysite.com is on a totally separate system with a lot redundancy, and is doing just fine.
If we get traffic from referrals or search, we want that traffic to be able to login and register, so we've replaced the 504 error with a 302 redirect to app.mysite.com until the situation is resolved. This provides the best possible experience for users (nothing's worse than a 504). How will this affect SEO? Is there something other than a 302 that I should be doing with the broken www.mysite.com domain?
-
I would also use a 302.
As long as it doesn't last too long, you should be OK.
If you think it may last longer, you could change your DNS to point to the other location, but you should drop your TTL on DNS so it is a fast changeover to move it back.
This kind of thing is best set up and tested when there are no problems, on another domain, and then test it for real sometime when you have worked out exactly what to do.

Depending on the longevity of the outage, I would say no, that you're using 302 appropriately. In fact I'm trying to think what else you could do that's better, and really can't come up with much (url rewrite so the end user isn't confused by app.mysite.com versus www? and that's reaching). If the outage is short term (e.g. less then 24-48 hours) I really can't think of a better solution than 302. Google dislikes it when you flip 301s off and on at the drop of a hat obviously.

Meta refresh for news site?
We have a news site that uses a meta refresh (<meta < span="">http-equiv="refresh" content="600" /> across all content. I understand the reasoning on the homepage and am trying to decide of the cons of using this (slows page, is it treated differently and loses pagerank/link ..) Does anyone have experience with meta refresh being a negative thing or does it no longer matter?</meta <>

Why isnt this site ranking?
I just took over for a site and noticed they have no presence for any keywords...not even low ranks. Their backlink profile is not the best, but webmaster tools says they have no manual actions. vonderhaar.com Thoughts on the matter?

I am merging 11 real estate community sites into 1 regional site and don't really know what type of redirect should I use for the homepage?, for instance: www.homepage.com redirect to www.regionalsite.com/community-page Should I 301 this redirect? If yes, how could I 301 redirect a homepage to an internal page in my new site? Cheers 🙂

Potential problems with my site
Dear Mozzers I hope you can help me with the following problems: My site is up and running for a year now and may be there has been problem with the homepage, because it ranks on first page for a competitive keyword on Google.com and Google.com.au only, however in other countries it just shows up as internal page and does not rank well. google.com/Google.com.au: homepage ranks top 10 (example.com)

Other countries (.co.uk, .ca..ect) an internal page shows up, example.com/internalpage.html - shows on page 3-4. I can not find the homepage of example.com anywhere around top 1000. Can you please tell me what are the potential problems. Thank you very much. BR/Tran0 -
Similar sites on same IP address
Hello, A client has a small number (3) of large price comparison sites which have been launched on separate subdomains - BUT all on the same hosting IP address. The roll out of the sites was not ideal from an SEO perspective - as basically cloned versions of the sites were initially launched and indexed - and are only now being customised i.e. unique content added to each of the category and sub category pages. The first site initially got some traffic - and so did the 2nd in the early days - but then they both bombed (especially number 2). So we think there has probably been some kind of slap / sandboxing. We are starting to see some very early signs of recovery now some months after. My questions is - would it be a wise move to migrate each of the sites to a separate IP address as we start to evolve and optimise each site. Or are they ok to be left on the same hosting / IP address? The sites in question are : shop.deliaonline.com shop.ivillage.co.uk rewards.bestforfilm.com Thanks in advance for your help. Richard

Changing Site URLs
I am working on a new client that hasn't implemented any SEO previously. The site has terrible url nomenclature and I am wondering if it is worth it to try and change it. Will I lose rankings? What is the best url naming structure? Here's the website http://www.formica.com/en/home/TradeLanding.aspx. (I am only working on the North America site.) Thanks!
