Problem with 404 and 500 Status code pages
-
Dear SeoMozzers,
I have a question related to one of the sites I have recently changed the URL, going from http:example.com to http://www.example.com
I did 301 redirects, as I was recommended to do. In the past month I have noticed an incredible drop in Google's rankings for many keywords and checking the crawling errors appearing in the SEO Crawling Report I have witnessed mayhem with Canonical/301 redirect types of errors.
Now, things seem a little better. I have noticed a reduction in the number of 301 and Canonical type or errors (by the way, I still do not get the Canonical issue :-)). My little questions are the following:
-
Will I ever go back to the positions I used to occupy before I redesigned the site's URL structure?
-
I have now noticed that the SeoMoz Crawling report show "404 Staus" errors and one "505 Status" error. Can somebody please tell me how to fix the 404 Status Errors? Can I fix them by myself, or maybe I can ask the guys at the web hosting company, since I am really bad at taking care of technical issues?
Thank you for the time you took to clarify my doubts.
Ad maiora,

Hi,
I will ask a private question in March.
Thank you very much.
-
Hi salvyy,
It shouldn't be a problem to determine errors and I'm willing to give you recommendation on how to fix them. Just send me cvs file and give me 30 min
Kind regards
Bojan

Hi Bojan,
Thank you for your feedback. I will follow your recommendation. Just one question: are you able to check the problems that a WordPress site has and fix them?
Thank you.

I notice you're a PRO Member - have you submitted this to Private Q&A? We could at least take a look at the site and see how bad the problem looks. Fixing it may still require a WordPress consultant, but diagnosing the severity of the problem is within the scope of Private Q&A.

Hi Dr. Meyers,
Thank you for the answer.
Your kind analysis is too technical and difficult for me to understand, so I'll just hire someone to check my site. As you may know it is always a risk to put one's site in the hands of other people who claim to know what they are doing in terms of SEO.
I'd like to contact someone who is an expert in WordPress, as my site are all in WordPress. Someone who knows the technical aspect of WordPress and knows how to optimize a WordPress blog. If you know of someone, please kindly let me know in private. If not, no problem and thank you for your time.
Best,
- Sal

Unfortunately, these things are really tough to diagnose from generalities (you have to be able to dig in and see what's happening on the actual site). Going from the non-www to "www" version should be ok, but any full-scale change can cause short-term rankings bounce. A couple of questions:
(1) Did you only change from non-www to www or did you make other URL changes? Make sure you've mapped every major URL to a new URL - it's easy to miss some.
(2) Are the 301s working and are they single-hop? Test some individual pages with a header checker, like this one:
http://tools.seobook.com/server-header-checker/
I think our Firefox toolbar will do it, too.
(3) Are the pages we show as 404s returning 404s (again check the headers)? Should they be? If you have legit pages returning 404s and 50Xs, you've got a problem. Unfortunately, why you're getting 404s is almost impossible to tell from the outside - it's specific to your server/platform.

As with most thing SEO related time will tell, there are many factors that can effect your ranking
-
Here's how I do it. Go to seoMoz page with errors, Grab report as cvs, open in Excel, delete all columns except url, status code, referrer. Now sort by status code. Go to referral page and try to find broken link. That should give you better look as to what source of problems can be.
If you want, you can share cvs file and I'm willing to give it a look and see what went wrong.
Kind regards
Bojan

Why is my home page ranking much higher than my collection page?
Hi everyone, Why is my client's home page ranking high for a certain keyword phrase rather than a collection page I have which is well optimised for this keyword? The collection page is on the 10th SERPs page. I did see there were keywords used in the footer of page and the keyword was also used in some intro text on the home page so I removed the keyword from these two places nearly 2 weeks ago and requested google to reindex both the collection page and home page and I've not seen any improvement of the collection page's ranking in SERPs. I also changed the meta description and meta title as the ctr was poor but there wasn''t that many impressions either. It is a competitive keyword organically so maybe the collection page's authority is just not good enough compared to the competitors hence why they are choosing the home page as it has higher page authority however this still is not helpful to searchers who land on home page. Does anyone have any ideas of what else I can do to get google to rank the ocllection page higher for the keyword instead of home page?

How to optimize count of interlinking by increasing Interlinking count of chosen landing pages and decreasing for less important pages within the site?
We have taken out our interlinking counts (Only Internal Links and not Outbound Links) through Google WebMaster tool and discovered that the count of interlinking of our most significant pages are less as compared to of less significant pages. Our objective is to reverse the existing behavior by increasing Interlinking count of important pages and reduce the count for less important pages so that maximum link juice could be transferred to right pages thereby increasing SEO traffic.

Duplicate Pages #!
Hi guys, Currently have duplicate pages accross a website e.g. https://archierose.com.au/shop/cart**#!** https://archierose.com.au/shop/cart The only difference is the URL 1 has a hashtag and exclamation tag. Everything else is the same. We were thinking of adding rel canonical tags on the #! versions of the page to the correct URLs. But Google doens't seem to be indexing the #! versions anyway. Does anyone know why this is the case? If Google is not indexing them, is there any point adding rel canonical tags? Cheers, Chris https://archierose.com.au/shop/cart#!

Help with duplicate pages
Hi there, I have a client who's site I am currently reviewing prior to a SEO campaign. They still work with the development team who built the site (not my company). I have discovered 311 instances of duplicate content within the crawl report. The duplicate content appears to either be 1, 2, or 3 versions of the same pages but with differing URL's. Example: http://www.sitename.com http://sitename.com http://sitename.com/index.php And other pages follow a similar or same pattern. I suppose my question is mainly what could be causing this and how can I fix it? Or, is it something that will have to be fixed by the website developers? Thanks in advance Darren

Many pages small unique content vs 1 page with big content
Dear all, I am redesigning some areas of our website, eurasmus.com and we do not have clear what is the best
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Eurasmus.com
option to follow. In our site, we have a city area i.e: www.eurasmus.com/en/erasmus-sevilla which we are going
to redesign and a guide area where we explain about the city, etc...http://eurasmus.com/en/erasmus-sevilla/guide/
all with unique content. The thing is that at this point due to lack of resources, our guide is not really deep and we believe like this it does not
add extra value for users creating a page with 500 characters text for every area (transport...). It is not also really user friendly.
On the other hand, this pages, in long tail are getting some results though is not our keyword target (i.e. transport in sevilla)
our keyword target would be (erasmus sevilla). When redesigning the city, we have to choose between:
a)www.eurasmus.com/en/erasmus-sevilla -> with all the content one one page about 2500 characters unique.
b)www.eurasmus.com/en/erasmus-sevilla -> With better amount of content and a nice redesign but keeping
the guide pages. What would you choose? Let me know what you think. Thanks!0 -

410 pages
Do you need to optimize a 410 page like you do for 404 pages? What does a visitor see when a page is 410 compared to a 404?

Pricing Page vs. No Pricing Page
There are many SEO sites out there that have an SEO Pricing page, IMO this is BS. A SEO company cannot give every person the same quote for diffirent keywords. However, this is something we are currently debating. I don't want a pricing page, because it's a page full of lies. My coworker thinks it is a good idea, and that users look for a pricing page. Suggestions? If I had to build one (which I am debating against) is it better to just explain why pricing can be tricky? or to BS them like most sites do?
