How do I Avoid Excessive Internal Links on an eCommerce site?
-
I think I'm getting dinged for this on Term Target because the page is full of products, which have links to their product page, but I'm not sure.
-
From the usability point of view and to help sort the problem you're facing I would suggest a few things - first I would make sure that each page with products doesn't display more than say around 12 of them and use pagination or view all option for the rest of them. If you are using 'view all' option, make sure that it is not implemented by hiding the remaining products, but by actually loading them on request.
If you're navigation uses a lot of links try to tidy it up - perhaps grouping them under main categories, which when go to the sub-categories, also - try to use breadcrumbs, which are a good way of navigating backwards and not necessarily showing all these sub categories in the sub-navigation.
Additionally, you should check all of the column items - are there any unnecessary links, which could be taken off?
The E-commerce site is more user friendly when visitor doesn't have to think twice what to do - and too many items is not only bad from the usability point of view - but also - as you have found out for SEO.
As Nakul has mentioned - you should check any duplicate links - if you have any in the main navigation, then in the side bar and footer - perhaps you could remove a few of them and have them only in one place.
It's really more guessing here as I don't know what you're site looks like, but I hope this will help a little bit.

I have seen certain "monster" brand-names doing stuff like shrinking their drop down menu's or completely disabling them on inner pages vs the homepage. IMO that is a big usability issue.
Imagine going to a homepage of a website and selecting Green Widgets from the Dropdown Widgets.
Now once you are on Green Widgets, you again mouseover on Widgets expecting the same dropdown, and it works. Good.
However, if you want to browse to a different product category, from the Green Widgets page, which lives under a different Tab, it doesn't work. I think that's a usability nightmare.
From Search Engine perspective, having the same redundant set of links in Header and Footer on every single page devalues the internal link juice you are passing from one page to another. It's a Catch 22 situation here.
In my experience, moving the repeating header and footer lower in the HTML helps. Other then that if the domain has decent authority and you are not facing any indexing issues, which you shouldn't I would not worry about it. It also depends on how many are too many

Header/Menu Links
Hey there, I seem to have heard mixed results on this. We have a LOT of pages that we are trying to tell google are important. Does it make that big of a difference if those pages are linked in the homepage/header menu? Or mega menu for example? We are essentially a review site, so we potentially have thousands of links that could be implemented into the menu. Thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Duplicate ecommerce domains and canonical
Hi everybody! I'd like to discuss the SEO strategy I've thought regarding a client of mine and ask for help because it's a serious case of duplicate content. There is a main website (the business model one) where he compares the cost of medicines in several pharmacies, to show the cheapest shopping cart to the customer. But the shopping has to been made in another domain, within the selected pharmacie, because my country's law in Europe says that is compulsory to sell the medicines only on the pharmacy website. So my client has started to create domains, one for each pharmacy, where the differences between them are only some products, the business information of the pharmacy and the template's colour. But all of them shares the same product data base. My aim is to rank the comparing website (it contains all the products), not each pharmacy, so I've started to create different content for this one. Should I place rel=canonical in the pharmacies domains t the original one? For instance: www.pharmacie1.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie2.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie1.com/product-10 >> www.originaltorank.com/product-10 I've already discuss the possibilities to focus all the content in only one website, but it's compulsory to have different domains in order to sell medicines By the way, I can't redirect 301 because I need these websites exist for the same reason (the law) He is creating 1-3 new domains every week so obviously he has had a drop in his SEO traffic that I have to solve this fast. Do you think the canonical will be the best solution? I dont want to noindex these domains beacuse we're creating Google Local pages for each one in order to be found in their villages. Please, I'll appreciate any piece of advice. Thanks!

Internal Linking Question(s)
Is it unwise to link internally to a page more than once on the homepage. I am reading that it is considered spammy. I am also reading that it passes PR twice to the internal page instead of just once... Which is it? Is there a way to stop passing PR to the "contact us" page. I watched an older video that Matt Cutts suggested a nofollow. Now I read that this strategy is a no no? Which is it? Thanks! 🙂

Question Regarding Site Structure
I have a quick question regarding site structure that I hope some of you guys could share your opinion on. I watched a white board friday from Rand a little while back where he explains that you need to try and make the site structure as flat as possible. He was saying try having no more that 3 links from the home page to get to the desired location. My question is this. I am looking at a site that has a pretty complex structure that I am trying to clear up as much as possible without making any of there rankings suffer. So they have www.domian.com/general-category/district/town/ and sometimes www.domian.com/general-category/district/town/item-specifics Now i know it is not good as it is, but they are dubious about changing too much as they have some serious traffic coming to the site. But, my question is that all the pages can be found from the home page through the menus/sub-menus. But do these count as a direct link from the home page. Also a problem is that because of this mozbot has detected that there are too many links from the home page and suggested that it should be below 200. But should I make these menu links no index or no follow. Obviously, by doing this, if the link does count as direct from the home page it wont after doing this. Thanks Jenson

Do Navigation links count the main link on the page?
After reading this article http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/anchor-text it talks about how only one link per page counts if they are going to the same page. This is what i had learned in the past; however, my understanding was if it was a in the main navigation as a child or grandchild or in the side navigation and then in the main body text, the link in the main body would count/ be held higher than the other options.

using open site explorer I see that my pages have a ridiculous amount of inbound links. I assume it is recording the same link from every page of the website through the menu somehow? Like the about us page has 200+ inbound links!!! ahh.. Is there a way to prevent this besides like.. no-following your own menu? Or is that what your supposed to do.. ~~Confused.

Should I nofollow all my outbound links?
I've read a lot of stuff and I can't get a good answer about this. Now I'm reading Wordpress 3 - Search Engine Optimization, and the writer says that less outbound dofollow links you have, better for you. What is the best practice in this subject? Should I really nofollow more than 80% of all my outbound links? Thank you.

More than 100 internal links from a page
Hi, we have been developing our new site and improving the internal linking for 2 reasons, 1 to improve spidering and 2 to up sell more to customers. The error reports from SEOMoz are showing our biggest problem is too many internal links from 2000+ pages. How much of an impact does it have by having say 180 internal links compared to say 99 on a page? Our website has been moving up the SERPs so should i worry about it or should I ignore the warnings and continue with the menu system and internal linking we have in place already? Thanks
