Masses (5,168 issues found) of Duplicate content.
-
Hi Mozzers,
I have a site that has returned 5,168 issues with duplicate content.
Where would you start?
I started sorting via High page Authority first the highest being 28 all the way down to 1. I did want to use the rel=canonical tag as the site has many redirects already.
The duplicates are caused by various category and cross category pages and search results such as ....page/1?show=2&sort=rand.
I was thinking of going down the lines of a URL rewrite and changing the search anyway. Is it work redirecting everything in terms of results versus the effort of changing all the 5,168 issues?
Thanks

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the responses I'm going to have a look at the issue again, with your suggestions in mind. And I'll keep you posted. Thanks again.

Don't look at individual URLs - at the scale of 5K plus, look at your site architecture and what kind of variants you're creating. For example, if you know that the show= and sort= parameter are a possible issue, you could go to Google and enter something like:
site:example.com inurl:show=
(warning: it will return pages with the word "show" in the URL, like "example.com/show-times" - not usually an issue, but it can be on rare occasion).
That'll give you a sense of how many cases that one parameter is creating. Odds are, you'll find a couple that are causing 500+ of the 5K duplicates, so start with those.
Search pagination is very tricky - you could canonicalize to "View All" as Chris Hill said, you could NOINDEX pages 2+, or you could try Google's new (but very complicated way):
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/09/pagination-with-relnext-and-relprev.html
Problem is, that doesn't work on Bing and it's pretty easy to mess up.
The rel-canonical tag can scoop up sorts pretty well. You can also tell Google in Google Webmaster Tools what those parameters do, and whether to index them, but I've had mixed luck with that. If you're not having any serious problems, GWT is easy and worth a shot.

Have a look at your pagination too. If you've not got a 'show all' link it might be worth putting one in and making that the canonical. Should eliminate some of your duplicate content issues.

Last I came accross such an issue I mostly started with making the 'easy' changes that reduced the number the most.
In the last case, it was implimenting a 301 to the www version of the site (cutting the errors in half) and putting a canonical on one search page.
This got the number down to the point where it was easyer to make decisions on 'Is it worth making friendlyer urls' and discover more intresting places dup content was being generated.
It's one of these things I would always aim for 0 where I can. It usualy means that the url or site structure can be improved sugnificantly, or it's such an easy fix that it's hard to justify not doing.

If it really is a URL issue then you should just be able to easily canonical the root pages and the rest should sort itself out. Start there and let the next spidering tell you where you stand.

Duplicate Content
HI There, Hoping someone can help me - before i damage my desk banging my head. Getting notifications from ahrefs and Moz for duplicate content. I have no idea where these weird urls have came from , but they do take us to the correct page (but it seems a duplicate of this page). correct url http://www.acsilver.co.uk/shop/pc/Antique-Vintage-Rings-c152.htm Incorrect url http://www.acsilver.co.uk/shop/pc/vintage-Vintage-Rings- c152.htm This is showing for most of our store categories 😞 Desperate for help as to what could be causing these issues. I have a technical member of the ecommerce software go through the large sitemap files and they assured me it wasn't linked to the sitemap files. Gemma

Duplicate Content Issues - Where to start???
Dear All I have recently joined a new company Just Go Holidays - www.justgoholidays.com I have used the SEO Moz tools (yesterday) to review the site and see that I have lots of duplicate content/pages and also lots of duplicate titles all of which I am looking to deal with. Lots of the duplicate pages appear to be surrounding, additional parameters that are used on our site to refine and or track various marketing campaigns. I have therefore been into Google Webmaster Tools and defined each of these parameters. I have also built a new XML sitemap and submitted that too. It looks as is we have two versions of the site, one being at www.justgoholidays.com and the other without the www It appears that there are no redirects from the latter to the former, do I need to use 301's here or is it ok to use canonicalisation instead? Any thoughts on an action plan to try to address these issues in the right order and the right way would be very gratefully received as I am feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment. (we also use a CMS system that is not particularly friendly and I think I will have to go directly to the developers to make lots of the required changes which is sure to cost - therefore really don't want to get this wrong) All the best Matt

Duplicate Page content / Rel=Cannonical
My SEO Moz crawl is showing duplicate content on my site. What is showing up are two articles I submitted to Submit your article (article submission service). I put their code in to my pages i.e. " <noscript><b>This article will only display in JavaScript enabled browsers.</b></noscript> " So do I need to delete these blog posts since they are showing up as dup content? I am having a difficult time understanding rel=cannonical. Isn't this for dup content on within one site? So I could not use rel="cannonical" in this instance? What is the best way to feature an article or press release written for another site, but that you want your clients to see? Rewritting seem ridiculous for a small business like ours. Can we just present the link? Thank you.

Duplicate Content on Product Pages
Hello I'm currently working on two sites and I had some general question's about duplicate content. For the first one each page is a different location, but the wording is identical on each; ie it says Instant Remote Support for Critical Issues, Same Day Onsite Support with a 3-4 hour response time, etc. Would I get penalized for this? Another question i have is, we offer Antivirus support for providers ie Norton, AVG,Bit Defender etc. I was wondering if we will get penalized for having the same first paragraph with only changing the name of the virus provider on each page? My last question is we provide services for multiple city's and towns in various states. Will I get penalized for having the same content on each page, such as towns and producuts and services we provide? Thanks.

Duplicate Content Issue
Very strange issue I noticed today. In my SEOMoz Campaigns I noticed thousands of Warnings and Errors! I noticed that any page on my website ending in .php can be duplicated by adding anything you want to the end of the url, which seems to be causing these issues. Ex: Normal URL - www.example.com/testing.php Duplicate URL - www.example.com/testing.php/helloworld The duplicate URL displays the page without the images, but all the text and information is present, duplicating the Normal page. I Also found that many of my PDFs seemed to be getting duplicated burried in directories after directories, which I never ever put in place. Ex: www.example.com/catalog/pdfs/testing.pdf/pdfs/another.pdf/pdfs/more.pdfs/pdfs/ ... when the pdfs are only located in a pdfs directory! I am very confused on how to fix this problem. Maybe with some sort of redirect?

E-Commerce Duplicate Content
Hello all We have an e-commerce website with approximately 3,000 products. Many of the products are displayed in multiple categories which in turn generates a different URL! 😞 Accross the entire site I have noticed that the product pages are always outranked by competitors who have lower page authority, domain authority, total links etc etc. I am convinced this is down to duplicate content issues. I understand there is no direct penalty but how would this affect our rankings? Is page rank split between all the duplicates, which in turn lowers it's ranking potential? I have looked for a way to identify duplicate content using Google analytics but i've been unsuccessful. If the duplicate content is the issue and page rank is divided am i best using canonical or 301 redirects? Sorry if this is an obvious question but If i'm correct we could see a huge improvement in rankings accross the board. Wow! Cheers Todd
