Duplicate content - 6 websites, 1 IP. Is the #1 site knocked down too?
-
Yes I know, running multiple websites on 1 IP isn't smart. 6 Websites with duplicate content on 1 IP is even worse. It's a technical issue we can't solve quickly.
Thing is, our #1 website, which has the highest DA and PR, was the first website with all this content. All other websites we're running were launched a few months, and some a few years, later. All content was copied from the #1 website.
I'd say the other websites would get knocked down by Google, because they duplicated the content. Google should see that our #1 website was the first that uploaded this content. Therefore our #1 website should rank normally.
Questions is: What does Google think of duplicate content when all websites are on 1 IP? Is, or will our #1 website get punished as well?

Thanks for helping everyone.
We rewrote content for a few websites, and no-indexed a few.
It's not worth the risk.
We can rewrite URL structure in the future, but I think rewriting the content has solved the issue. -
If you want to rank multiple domains for the same content, in that case canonical tag won't do it. Also, keep in mind that with your current structure you are risking everything including the main-website. I am sure you read what EGOL mentioned. Its not worth the risk. I would concentrate on the main-website first and do whatever it takes to separate it from the rest of the websites. If you still really really have to do the other domains/websites, I would do the following: 1. Change the Product Names, Descriptions, Image file-names etc as much as you can. Make them unique. Honestly, there's no shortcut to this. 2. Separate the sites in terms of domains and hosting and do not interlink the sites to each other. 3. As much as possible, use a completely different CMS/URL structure.

I know someone who had several duplicate sites on same server with links connecting them. All of the sites disappeared from google and have been gone for over a year. They are still in Bing.

Hi Thiago,
Thanks for your answer, good point.
I do know I have to rewrite content on our other websites. We could use canonicals for all websites linked to the #1 website. But we also want to rank separately under different domains.
What I do want to know is: Does Google punish our #1 website?
-
Hi!
I think Google should imagine that your site is trying to rank better using duplicated content.
Maybe you could use rel canonical tags for all this content to show Google that this content came for that place, and is the #1 site. Than you can create new content to the sites that are coming now for optimization.

Hello Moz community, Please check out my website http://www.likechimp.com - I'd love to know your thoughts. I have never built links for my website but managed to do pretty well on the rankings organically. Lately, figures have dropped so need to get back up there on Google. Any tips from what you see already would be greatly appreciated! Example ecom product I sell: http://likechimp.com/facebook-shop/buy-100-facebook-event-attendees/ Thanks

Blog.website.com or website.com/blog
Hello, I have a question, in some moz guidelines you can read website.com/blog is better/more recommended than blog.website.com. But when you look at the domain authority you see no difference. blog.website.com gets exact the same domain authority as website.com. So can somebody explain why website.com/blog is really better than blog.website.com? Or is there no difference? Thank you verry much

Duplicate Content - Joint Press Releases
One of my clients posts Joint Press Releases with it's partners on their blog. The client's partner posts the exact same press release on their website. I think this must meet the Duplicate Content flag... does anyone have experience in dealing with this? Sarita

Similar Content
I'm in the process of launching two new websites (redesign / rebrand) - one website represents the manufacturer while a second website represents the retail side of the manufacturer (same company essentially but two different brands). The sites have co-existed historically without worry of canibalizing the other's traffic, but I want to make sure in this redesign that we're all set. I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on how to handle two sites with different branding but VERY similar content (product descriptions are essentially the same). I was thinking it could be smart to just no follow the content on the manufacturers site since we're just trying to drive traffic to the consumer-facing retail side mostly anyway but would love to hear from the experts! Thank you.

Duplicate Pages Different Content
Will duplicate pages different content hurt rankings/seo E-commerce Site is plugin style with WYSIWYG editor allowing for full customization, all pages are setup with basic default content. Ive created custom pages with content/keywords to begin seo on them I have two pages www.domain.com/sports/hockey and www.domain.com/nhl-tickets The first url is default, with a single H1tag, + Default Meta+Title tags, the second is the content rich page, and structured properly, both of which show up on the site, should I block the first url from displaying at all? The reason I am asking is because ive also setup breadcrumb links, which makes all of these category url's accessible on the site, I cannot edit breadcrumb links, we can either have them there or remove them. Thank you Very Much!!

Duplicate content across multiple e-commerce sites
Hi, This may have been discussed here before though I couldn't find a definitive answer, but I was wondering what the best practice for having multiple e-commerce sites with some of the same products on both is. If Site A has 200 products, and Site B has 300 products, and 50 overlap, do they absolutely have to have unique product descriptions? The descriptions have already been rewritten to be different from the manufacturer's description, but do they need to be changed again? Or should the 50 products only be listed on one site or the other? Sites like csnstores.com seem to have the same descriptions as the subsidiary sites that they have, but maybe they have different sidebars/footers/etc which make the content considered original?
