Title Tags and Over Optimization Penalty
-
In the past, it was always a good thing to put your most important keyword or phrase at the beginning of the Title Tag with the company name at the end. Now according to the over optimization penalty in the Whiteboard Friday video, it seems to be better to be more human and put the company name at the beginning with the keyword or phrase following. Am I understanding this correctly?
-
Over optimizing is having an [Exact keyword] all over a page.
If you url is http://url.keyword
If your title is - keyword
H1- Keyword
decription - keyword
body - keyword... most people who overstuff will add a ton of words just so they can include there keywords many times. 1 keyword per 100 words is a good number to go by... so they add 10000 words and 100o keywords
image - keyword
footer - keyword
When everything on the page is designed for a bot the bot will know. The best practice to avoid over opting is to include your [Exact] key in some places where it would make sense.
To avoid over optimizing use broad for some keywords and exact for some.. Mix it up and focus on where things will be best suitable for your users.
-
to add to the question, some people say that this is only affecting low quality sites, if your site is a well established site then you don't have to worry about this.
- Define established site
- Is this true?
Im freaking about this over optimization thing. I don't list keywords with commas I generally do (keyword) - (keyword) and only 2, and I avoid putting the company at the end...seems that now it has to be there....
-
I think a lot depends on the strength of the brand/Company name. If you've got a well established reputation in your niche then having your company name in a prominent position is more than likely going to be beneficial.
I'm also wondering what affect this might have on brand related searches in the future. Be interesting to take a look at branded vs non-branded traffic and how the positioning of brand/company names affects things...
Also, what kind of searches are we talking about (navigational, transactional, and informational.)?
-
There are many ranking factors and yes, having keyword placement first in a title is great from a SERP perspective. The user typed "keyword" they will most likely click on "keyword" when its the first thing in your title it is more likely to get clicked on.
This should help you understand more about all the factors and how much they really matter.

Thanks for the response RankSurge.
I am torn on this as I was raised on implementing keywords first and the brand second. I was also raised on left to right reading for importance of keywords that described the page you were about to visit. Visitors (to my site anyway) search for products first, not brand names.
Specifically, I rank #2 for "outdoor enclosures" (L-com.com). So, you're saying I should reverse the order and I might see an increase in daily clicks?
Thanks!

I recently went through this with a client of mine. Previously, they had their top 2 keywords first, then the company name.
They were ranked #2 in Google for both of their terms.
We made the switch last Monday, placing the company name first, then the keywords.
The other sites in the top 5 with them all have their keywords listed first.
Impact?
Since we made the title switch, they are still in the second position, but they are now averaging 15 more clicks per day!
I know some will say it's because the company name stands out from the clutter - and I agree on some levels. But as Doug mentioned, the title is phrased in a way that we humans like to read, so I think that helps too.
-
You don't need to put the company name at the beginning, just write your titles in a way that would make sense to a normal person reading them. Make sure they correctly describe the page content in natural language (that includes your keywords).
One of the big problems comes about when you're trying to target multiple keywords and have title tags that are just a comma separated list of keywords.
Rand's recent Whiteboard Friday covered this: 6 Changes Every SEO Should Make BEFORE the Over-Optimization Penalty Hits - Whiteboard Friday
Also think about how to make these compelling for someone looking at the title in the SERPS. Can you give the reader a reason to click though on your entry?
Hope this helps.

[G Penalty?] Significant Traffic Drop From All Sources
My client's traffic started to significantly decrease around Nov 21 (Panda update 22). This includes traffic from all sources - search engines (G, B, & Y!), direct, AND referral. At first we thought it was a G penalty but G answered our reconsideration request by stating that no manual penalty had occured. It could be algo penalty, but again, the site has been hit across all sources. Client has done zero backlinking - it is all natural. No Spam, etc.. All of his on-site SEO is perfect (700+ pages indexed, all unique content, unique title and desc). On Oct 16, he switched from his old URL to a new URL and did proper redirects. (Last year - Dec 2011 - he switched his CMS to Drupal and although there was a temporary decrease in traffic, it showed recovery within a month or so.) He does zero social on his site and he has many ads above the fold. Nevertheless, the traffic decrease is not source specific. In other words, all sources have decreased since Nov 21, 2012 and have not recovered. What is going on? What can be the explanation for decrease in traffic across all sources? This would be easy to answer if it was only Google Organic decrease but since direct and referral have also been hit, we cannot locate the problem. Please share your personal experiences as well as advice on where we should look. Could this be negative SEO? Where would we look? ANY ADVICE IS WELCOME !!!! Every bit counts Thanks!!

Optimizing Main URL with Various Relevant Keywords
Hi, I am new to working with SEO on my website and making attempts to create rich content to allow me to rank above and near competitors of our very niche market for LED microlights. I understand the concept now of on-page optimization. I have found key words that are perfect for optimizing specific products. I am working on structuring my website with enriching content that specific key words will direct organic search traffic to products. However, what techniques do I use to drive traffic to my main domain with a keyword that is relevant to my site but no specific products? For example, the phrase "light show gloves" or "light show" is a keyword relevant to my site in general, so I would like my main URL to show in search results when these phrases are searched. What can I do to optimize my site for such phrases? Do I merely use them in related categories and product content? And if yes, how can I ensure I have optimized my domain fully for various relevant keywords and compare to competitors? Thanks!

How does Google treat anchor tags on badges after penguin update?
We have a website builder that creates sites in sub-domains (i.e. yoursite.breezi.com) on every site we have included a badge that has anchor text and an image. My question is given the fact that we will include this on many if not most of the sites created inside our builder how will google treat backlinks with the same anchor tag/text from non relevant sites after the penguin update? I am concerned about the backlinks from non-theme related sites and it's SEO implications. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Google dance/over optimized/paranoid?
Hi guys, hope your all OK and thanks in advance for taking a nosey at this. OK where to start - my rankings for the last 12 months have progressively improved every week, usually of the 300 KWs i track the last few months has seen approx 70 up/70down per week, but the improvements usually outweigh the declines. This week I saw a sudden drop though - 35 improvements and 112 declines. The strange thing was though, the improvements came on the more competitive KWs, and the less competitive words I haven't done much or any back linking for dropped. Seems silly me asking this question when I run that through my head ofcouse KWs you don;t work on will drop like flies? It should be plainly obvious those words would drop off but all have been improving on there own slowly over the last 6/7 months. Now if this was a penalty (nothing showing in webmaster tools) I would have expected it to come through on my KWs I have over done the backlinking for, but these are the 1's that improved. So is it just the Google Dance? I normally see some words such as the big 1 we target DJ Equipment go from position 13 - 24 can change hourly sometimes! Could it just be quite a few have dropped all at once and will pop back up this week? Also if anyone could give us any pointers in general on where you think we should be taking our SEO it would be much appreciated. I know we have been a little lazy with our backlinking and could do with some much better/ industry related websites linking to us, and there are title tags/metas on product page that need sorting.. aside these couple of issue's? DJs Only

Drop in traffic last 24 hours plus title tag not correct
Over the last 24 hours we've seen a drop in traffic to our website from Google. Basically since Satursday 19th Nov the traffic has drop about 50% normal levels. The strange thing I noticed is that when you search Google for a search phrase the snippet Google is showing as the title is not the same as we have in a meta title tag on the page and this is across many pages, not just 1 or two. Anyone know why this is and what is happening ? Thanks

Is There Any Problem For Google When We Use Capital Letters in the Beginning of Each Word in TITLE?
I'm just wandering is there any difference when we use "Cheap Holidays to Egypt" or "Cheap holidays to Egypt". It is easier for users to read first option but would the second be more relevant for crawls?
