Help! I need to hire a SEO / SEM Specialist - Am I asking for too much?!
-
Hey all!
I'm expanding my in-house marketing team and I need to add an SEO / SEM Specialist that will strategize, execute & manage the following:
- Organic SEO
- PPC across multiple channels (Google, Bing & also social sites like Facebook)
- Remarketing & Display marketing
- Banner ads
- Retargeting
We're a lean company that's all about doing more with less. But not being very familiar with the SEO / SEM world I'm afraid I'm asking for too much!
What do you guys think? What's your experience been?
If you do think that this is potentially a single position, what would be the best title for attracting talent? SEO / SEM Specialist? Digital Marketing Manager? With the research I've done - jobs / titles have been totally across the board! I'm not able to find much consistency.
Thank you all for your help It's greatly appreciated!!!!!

Got it! Thanks for the clarification Keri.

Ryan, I'm guessing that the OP is referring to display/banner ads, and to using remarketing/retargeting practices. Just like if you visit SEOmoz from another computer (where you're not a pro member) you'll find Roger following you all around the web, that's one form of retargeting.

lolz  thats about 1/2 of what i do at work but to be honest a team effort really helps one person can do that because is mainly managing services. '
But if you want to be the best in both adwords & SEO you should have 2 people working together
We just went from just me to now 5 part time people + me

Thank you! Conversion Optimization across eCommerce / our company's sites is also something we'd like a potential candidate to be able to do...Where do you think that falls?

Not asking for too much if you find the right person. Â People that have been doing running an internal digital marketing department for 7 years or more have been forced to have experience in both on-page and off-page optimization as well as PPC/SEM. Â Remarketing and display marketing is just another extension of PPC because converting leads and follow up "drip marketing" are a natural extension of lead generation and conversion.
Should be a Digital Marketing Director or with the assumption that the position is internally focused on supporting all of your company "lead generation" initiatives probably makes sense as Director Business Development-Digital Marketing.
Feel free to Private Message me to discuss what you are looking for and what the position entails. I might be able to help you and I am based out of Michigan.
Hope this helps.
Thanks- Mark

Hi Rochelle, Digital Marketing Manager (or even Online Marketing Manager) works imo.
Wondering if this is 2 roles though? Obviously depends on size of company/client types and demands but in my experience, SEO is often more suited to someone a bit more technical (e.g. can work through site/crawl errors for instance) whereas the SEM/remarketing role is a bit more sales/commercial focussed.
(just my thoughts - hope this helps)

Hi Rochelle,
I am not clear what you have in mind for "Remarketing and Display marketing". It sounds like physical displays that might be located in stores?
With respect to job title, as you shared they vary greatly from one company to the next. When I hear the word "manager" I think of managing people but then others may share a different view. I can only recommend providing a job title which most accurately reflects the duties of the position.
Congratulations on your expansion and good luck.

Do you think Content distribution might help for linkbuilding outreach ?
I'm building my netlinking strategy, and I know that creation great content on my website is the first step for good linkbuilding. However, as we know, a link does only worth if he can be viewed, shared, and ammended. I'm already including email outreach for my strategy, but I'm thinking of content distribution as a method to reach an even great audience, and to get some backlinks. To be clear, I'm not saying that my backlink strategy will be based on the links received through content distribution (which will be NOFOLLOW); but I think a large audience from the aggregate websites can see my content, and maybe link to it, so I can earn backlinks from the content I'm creating on my website. Based on your experience, what do you think?

Local SEO issue
Hello, I have a client that is located just outside of Baltimore, MD. Their zip code is 21236, which is seen as sometimes Nottingham and sometimes Overlea. Their competitors come up for Baltimore with the same zip. This client seems to be having some problems, and I think it is because of this geo confusion? Is this so, and if so, how can I make location more clear to Google? Thanks

Can't seem to submit my xml sitemap to Baidu, can someone help?
Hello Mozers and SEM's, I'm sure all of you know and understand the importance of uploading your sitemap to search engines. Once search engine in particular is Baidu. For some reason, i can't find a way to submit my link www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml. Â For Google, Bing, and Yandex it was easy, but Baidu is giving me problems. Â Don't tell me to "wait until they crawl your site", i have over 1000+ pages of unique content that those other 3 search engines found because of my sitemap; Baidu can't be that slow. Their robots only found 147 pages. đ If you take a look at the image attachment, you can see why I'm stuck, i can't read chinese! (and it's an image, so i couldn't translate it). Has anybody had any luck submitting their .xml link into Baidu? Can someone walk me through it? Let me know! Shawn xILP69w

What is the best way to share good content (and help myself in the process)
i spend a decent amount of my spare time browsing quora, stumbleupon, google reader, pulse, etc keeping up with all the different aspects of internet marketing when i come across a particuarly valuable piece of content i take a few seconds and share it using hootsuite on my linked, twitter, facebook  (i spread them out so there is only one post a day) this rewards those who write valuable content but im not doing anything to benefit my site - www.sawwebmarketing.com im establishing myself as somebody who has good stuff to share to my potential clients.... what a quick, easy way to share the high quality things i come across that will create links for me as well? (short of writing my own blog post listing the high quality articles i found with my thoughts on each) thoughts? opinions? thanks everybody! Matthew

Are you an in-house SEO or an Agency/freelancer SEO ?
Really curios about the pie split on SEO MOZ community about this. So, are you an In-house SEO or an Agency / Freelancer SEO ? (personally as prediction I would say in-House SEOs are predominant here - just curios to see the ratio - although not sure how many SEO MOZ members are reviewing the Q and A area but again it will be nice to see the ratio of the in house vs agency that are spending time on Q and A's).

Looking for Freelance SEO'ers
Hi, I wouldn't normally post a request for freelancers here, but I noticed someone else has done it and its not against the rules! so here goes... We are looking for Freelancers to help with our work load. In particular we are searching for Link Builders who can establish links on various websites through the use of article writing/blog content posting and other methods. Also, we require general SEOs who can perform the usual technical tasks such as creating 301's, canonicals and SEO audit reports on client websites. Ideally we only want UK based, white hatters with at least 2 years SEO experience. Please pm me if this interests you. Thanks Aran
