Why Webmaster tools shows different avg. positions?
-
Hi everyone, I am new to Seomoz, I loved this amazing SEO school
My questions is about webmaster tool.
Webmaster tool shows that my site's avg. positions is 34 and its getting better every week. I even see some new queries, new avg. positions for that queries. That's great !
But when I search the avg position it is between 54 -60 and I don't see any new queries . Shouldnt we rely on what webmaster tells us about avg. positions?
Thanks a lot

Welcome to Q+A,
The avg positions in webmaster tools aren't very reliable. They look at data from all searches and can be influenced by personalization and localization. This means that your "true" position (position with personalization turned off) can be very different from your average position which is an aggregate of all of the data.
I tend to see that my average ranking is lower than my "true" ranking so if I were you I would just check that I'm removing personalization from the search. You can either open up a private browsing session (anonymous browsing if you're using Chrome) or add &pws=0 onto the end of an existing URL query string. In the example below I've highlighted where you would add this in.

Understanding Average Position in Google Anaylitics
Hello here, I have a question about the Queries report under "Search Engine Optimization" in Google Analytics: is the "Average Position" information a reliable one? I have a lot of queries that appear, from that report, to average first position, but when I verify that on Google by connecting anonymously, I can't even find my result on the first page! To me, that information is worthless and makes me think all the rest of that report is unreliable. If anyone can help me to understand it, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Enabling Webmaster Tools data within Analytics
Hello, Im having a hard time connecting webmaster tools within Google Analytics i want to be able to see search queries in GA That's what Google tells me to do : "You can visit the Property Settings page in Analytics account management to change which of your Webmaster Tools sites' data you wish to show, and control which profiles on your Web Property have access to view the data." I cant find "Property Settings Page" in google analytics, or anything that has to do with "Webmaster tools" I was wandering if you can help me on that 🙂 Thanks

Is Analytics Code for SubDomains different?
I am currently tracking site performance on our website with Google Analytics. Recently, we've brought a Wordpress blog into our site as a subdomain blog.accupos.com. Though we did this a few months ago, we do not have Analytics data for these pages within the wordpress platform. I've found where to paste the code, in the Footer block of the Wordpress template, just before the close body tag (is this the best recommended way?) and just have one question about WHICH code to paste. Can I add the original code, same as the rest of the site? Or does Analytics have a different code for tracking subdomains? If so, do I need to replace existing code for the rest of the site? I hope I worded this okay. Please help. I'd appreciate it! Derek M.

Google Webmaster Dropped Traffic
Hi Guys, I've recently implemented a new site design with a new url architecture etc.. I set up Google Webmaster tools in early March and went live with the new site on 2nd April. Since the 6th April (4 days after going live) I've notice a drop in impressions from 15,000 - 28,000 per day to 3,500 - 5,500 per day. Now I'm kind of new to this, so after I cleaned up after my initial panic, I checked impressions vs. clicks. Impression are down 44% and clicks 31%. Not bad I thought but then again what if I dropped so far off the radar I never made an impression. 1. So first question: Are the number of impressions of a keyword independant of ranking. So if I rank #3,445,234th will I still see impressions listed but avg. position reflect #3,445,234? So while I was thinking of asking these questions I checked Google Analytics for which I have just over 3 years of metrics. Compared to the past; overall traffic and organic traffic are the same if not 10-20% better. 2. So second: Am I missing something? Its a resort website so easter just ended and you would expect the traffic to match and drop, but such a sudden and dramitic drop in Webmaster Tools impressions does not match Google Analytics. Infact Organic traffic climbed slightly. Can anyone offer any insight? Thanks, Adam
