Interpreting Keyword Difficulty Tool results
-
I have been running various reports using the Keyword Difficulty tool. The columns are color coded - are there one set of signals that are more important than others? I am trying to analylze why we are ranking where we are and where our competitors are weak enough to overcome in a short term. I cannot seem to find a formula for the top indicatators for moving up in ranking.
One of my sites in ranking number 5 but is neck and neck with the number one site for results. The other site is number 6 for the same term but has virtually no strength in the data like links, mozrank, trust, Social, etc...The sites 7-10 are much stronger on data. Maybe since they are from the same C block that helps?
Any advice or experience would be helpful.

Hi Devon,
For the sake of others reading this question, I want to first say that it is important to run a full report. Sounds like you are doing this already. (the Keyword Analysis has 2 levels of reports - the "default" and "full" - the RUN FULL REPORT button is about 1/2 down the page)
The point of the Keyword Analysis Tools is it allows you some insight as to why certain sites are ranking above others. In the vast majority of cases, the sites in the top position almost always lead in at least a few areas, whether it be link metrics, on-page optimization or social shares.
(more often than not, it's link metrics and number of linking root domains, or linking c-blocks. See the ranking factors to understand why these metrics are often correlated with higher rankings)
That said, as Ben pointed out, the tool can't examine all factors. Sometimes, it's a single perfect link from a high-authority domain that causes a site to rank where it does. In many of these cases, OSE is another excellent research tool that can give you a more detailed analysis into link metrics.
As for magic bullets, there are a few metrics that correlate with higher rankings more than others. Two of the most consistent are "Page Authority" and "Number of Linking Root Domains" - but even these can't guarantee success.
Regardless, hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

Thanks Ben. That is kind of what I thought but was hoping for a magic bullet :).

This is a tough one.
The keyword difficulty tool can give an indication of where you need to improve in order to move up the rankings but at the same time there are other things that you might need to consider like one page optimization.
You also have to remember that SEOMoz's data does not necessarily reflect how Google views the same data. For example SEOMoz might be saying that you have 30 unique linking root domains however Google might discount 29 of them as having been previously identified as being in a link network. So you see, you have no way of knowing whether the data you see is the data that counts.

Which page speed tools do you trust?
We are at a loss. We have been following Google Pagespeed Insights which gives us horrible marks. Nothing we do seems to really make a difference. GTMetrix and Pingdom give us much better scores. We don't know what to do...

Big variation in the number of search results. (person's name)
Hi, I have been noticing a really dramatic variation in the number of results Google is returning for the name "Carolyn Hadlock." Most of the time it seems to be around 2000. But then it will jump up to over 10,000. Does anyone know why there would be such a big jump? And then why it would go back? If tested both logged into Google and then not - as well as having others log is as themselves. That does not seem to be it. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Webmaster Tools Records
Hey, I'm trying to find a way of getting data from Googles Webmaster Tools and recording it in either a database or spread sheet. Is there any software out there that I can use to do this or would i have to look at developing it my self? Thanks, Luke.

Why is my Domain Authority dropping from 52 to 46 but my Keyword ranking has never been higher?
At the start of August my Domain Authority was 52 but it has fallen to 46 over the course of 8 weeks. At first this was credited to the smaller index that SEOMOZ has taken and when this was certainly in line with our rivals results as well who all suffered a drop. When the index issue was fixed we did see an improvement, back up to 51 at the start of September, pretty much in line with all of our rivals. However our Domain Authority has dropped again and this time it is in complete isolation, none of our rivals have suffered anything like a 3 point drop. Our SEO has never been better with 65% of our keywords ranking in the top 3 and 86% ranking in the top 10. Im wondering what is causing this rapid drop in Domain Authority and what affect, if any, it was have on our future keyword rankings. Thanks, Emmet

How come de results from the old Google Keyword Tool are so different from the results from the keyword planner?
When I insert the keyword 'IT jobs' with Belgium as country and Dutch as the language, there is a huge difference between the results in the keyword planner and the keyword tool. Keyword tool says 1,000,000 local searches per month Keyword planner says 590 local searches per month This is a really big difference and I don't know which results I should trust. Can anybody help me with this?

Google Analytics "Undetermined" Keyword
Google analytics is suddenly showing a new keyword "undetermined". Traffic Sources > Sources > All Traffic with the primary dimension set to Keyword. It's currently our 13th keyword and it is displayed without parentheses around that you see with (not provided) or (not set). Anyone have any idea what this is? Thanks!

Any updates regarding 'not provided' organic keyword referrals in Google Analytics?
I know that the encrypted searches done by people logged into their Google accounts is causing the error, is there any workaround or any update from Google as to IF they will give us our keyword data back? I'm currently losing data on about 20% of my daily searches . . .
