Why does Google Claimed Local Listing Ranking Drop?
-
I have two local google places listinggs unlaimed. Both listings were ranking in the blended search in 7 pack.
Once I claimed the local listings for the business both listings rankings have dropped. And one has totally vanished from the search rankings.
Is this normal as it appears local places that are not claimed are ranking higher than local places claimed?

Hi Arthur,
Unfortunately, no, if you can't receive mail at the old address and are being offered a postcard only option, that won't work for you. Because of this, instead of claiming the incorrect listing, I would recommend that you use the report a problem link at the bottom of the Place Page (if it still exists and is available to you). Since this morning, though, everything is upside down in the whole Google Localsphere. I'm not totally sure what has happened in Australia, but I believe the migration from Places to Plus is global. In case you haven't read about it, here's a good overview from Search Engine Land:
At this point, Google is saying that you can still managed existent listings from the Places Dashboard, so if you do have the ability to report a problem, do so. Let Google know you have a correct listing and point to it and that this other listing is old and the business doesn't exist there.
Today has been the craziest day in Local in recent memory. Lots of changes in the works.

Thanks Miriam,
You have been a great help.
the places with the address 22 Market St, South Yarra VIC 3141 only offers to be be verified by postcard, the issue is that is the incorrect address so how do I then get the listing verified and then merged if I cannot receive the verification postcard? Are you aware of another way to obtain verification if you can only use the address?

Hi Arthur,
I am seeing 3 listings when I perform your suggested search:
Flawless Flowers 22 Market St, South Yarra VIC 3141(03) 9827 7656 1 review "Best florist in Melbourne, thanks again for your help." - Flawless Flowers Melbourne VIC 30000409 518 822 · flawlessflowers.com.auFlawless Flowers 22/163 Commercial Road, South Yarra VIC 31411300 606 000 · flawlessflowers.comIt sounds as if you are trying to rectify the South Yarra dupes, but you are right, the Melbourne address is incomplete. If you've got all of the details correct in the dashboard, it might be a good idea to go through the troubleshooter process to signal to Google that your information isn't being fully displayed:http://support.google.com/places/?hl=en-US&rd=1However, before you do that, if you've just claimed this listing, you might want to wait a couple of weeks to see if the situation rectifies itself. It's definitely important to clear up the dupe, as Google's total trust in your whole record takes all things into account. You want them to trust that your Melbourne and South Yarra locations are both real.

Hi Miriam,
Thanks for your reply
The following are the details, if you go the http://www.google.com.au/maps and search for "flawless flowers"
The listing flawless flowers in Melbourne is the listing that has vanished from the places rankings
There is a duplicate listing for this company at 22 market street (these details are wrong) but this is in a different location. Will merge this listing once verified with the address at 22/163 commercial road
I just noticed that my full address does not show for the melbourne listing but the complete address is completed in the local listings page. The complete address for the shop location is Flinders street station, shop 5 melbourne victoria 3000
This could be the issue?

Hi Arthur,
While claiming the listing is an unlikely candidate for causing a drop in rankings, is there a chance that your activity has drawn Google's attention to a situation involving 2 duplicate listings, and, potentially, other problems with your Places record? Why do you have 2 listings? Are they for separate businesses, same business but unique physical location? Could there also be other unclaimed listings out there dragging down your rank (do a search for your business name and phone number in Maps)? Can you provide some more details? Thanks!

Is it normal to initially rank low in the SERPs, then over time gain rank?
We just released a very targeted page for a specific item about 18 hours ago. For the main keyword as well as multiple variations, we currently are ranking around # 40 to # 50 depending on what the exact query is. Is it normal to initially rank lower in the SERPs and then as the page ages, gain? Thank you for your insights!

Sudden rankings drop for our most profitable keyword?
Hi, I was hoping you could help me with a troubling issue that has come up this week. We have consistently ranked in the top 3 for the keyword "grey goose glasses" for the last 12 months. We received 74 visits from this keyword from Dec 3 to Jan 3. For some reason on Jan 4th we dropped from the top 3 to somewhere around 40-70 and receive almost no traffic from this keyword an longer. The page that was ranking was http://thebottlemill.com/tbm/grey-goose-drinking-glass.html I have since changes a the Page title and URL with a 301 redirect and the H1 tag to be a better match but this was just done yesterday. We havent seemed to be effected like this on other keywords. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Rankings dropped - Why?
At the end of November a client site dropped significantly in the rankings. The drop effected almost all the keyphrases we monitor. Historically the homepage has always ranked higher than the sub-pages - however now it seems Google is no longer ranking the home page, and instead ranking the sub-pages, just far far lower down. Any ideas what could cause this?

Will changing a subdirectory name negatively effect local ranking?
We submitted a group of 50+ franchise stores into UBL to fulfill directory listings back in September. We are now looking at changing the some of the URL structure to include city names. Example: website.com/store/store-name(not city) to website.com/location/city-store-name Will changing the subdirectory and resubmitting to the directory aggregators negatively effect their search results? Thanks, Jake

Google ranking for the term "locum tenens"
Hello- My company is having a very difficult time performing well for the term "locum tenens". This term literally defines our industry and target market (temporary physician staffing, essentially) and is by far the most searched term in our industry (30k / month, give or take). For us, “locum tenens” is like “ice cream” is to Ben & Jerry’s. Of course, there are other keywords we're concerned with, but this is by far the most important single term. We've moved up to page 3 a few times since launching our redesigned site in April, but seem to continuously settle on page 5 (we've been on page 5 for many weeks now). While I didn’t expect us to be on page 1 at this point, I having a hard time understanding why we’re not on at least 2 or 3, in light of the sites ahead of us. We have a ton of decent, optimized content and we’ve tried not to be too spammy (every page does have locum tenens on it many times, but it describes our service – it’s hard not to use it many times). We are working on developing backlinks and are avoiding any spammy backlink schemes (I get calls every day from companies saying they can give me 400 backlinks a month, which I have a hard time believing is a good long term strategy). It just sort of seems like our site is cursed for some reason that I can't understand. We are working with a competent SEO firm, and still have not made much progress for this term. So, I’m hoping maybe the community here might have some helpful advice. Our site is www.bartonassociates.com. Any insight you guys may have would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance and have a great day. Jason

My site dropped in serp and backlinks ranked higher than it.
appliance-repair-ny.com I recently got some new good page rank backlinks (4-5) to my site. After a nice increase in rankings i left it for a couple of day (holiday) when i came back i found out that my rankings dropped dramatically for many different keywords when in some cases the backlinks are listed higher than me for the keyword. Any suggestions? should i keep on building links in the same paste, or slow down a little? UPDATE: I now noticed that the seomoz app has a warning that my homepage is missing title tag and meta tag. I'm using wordpress and headspace plugin. I recently updated wordpress.
