Landing Page - Home Page redesign SEO factor question - Serious concern.
-
Hi Folks,
I'm considering making a big change to our website and really need some expert advise. Will we lose ranking if we do what I propose?
Our site www.meninkilts.com, needs to split users/clients by "Commercial" and "Residential" so we can message/market completely differently to each client.
We are considering doing this structure:
Landing Page
|
|
Commercial Homepage Residential Homepage
Right now we rank well, for our keywords like "Window Cleaning cityname" but are worried that adding a landing page, and splitting our site to two homepages will effect seo (ie: a landing page would only have two buttons: one for commercial and one for residential).
What would be the best way to handle this. Looking forward to your insights!
Cheers Brent

Joel - Fantastic replies. I Love SEOMOZ... some many passionate folks here. You have given me some real food for thought that I will take away and break the project down a bit with. Thanks again

Another idea would be to do some seo work for the commercial page and separate seo work for your residential page. If you're also thinking about doing a PPC campaign which most seos suggest to do both, then you can create an ad for each commercial and residential. That way you will direct your visitors to the page they desire tailored for them. Some of the best seos out there ( note I'm not one of them, I'm still learning myself ) have suggested that if a person sees your company in an ppc ad and on the same page for organic search, they are more likely to click on your organic search. This means more exposure and won't cost you much.

If you want to maintain your rankings and you have a good web designer that will make it look professional then yes. At the end of the day it's all about converting web visitors to actual consumers of your product. There is always a battle between seos and web designers. The trick is to merge both or find a person that is competent in both. I'll look at the site now and give you more feed back.

Thanks Joel!
Almost all links are for main homepage www.meninkilts.com
So your idea for leaving the homepage as is and creating a giant buttons for Commercial and one for Residential is probably better.

It depends how your site is generating it's rankings. Is it a competitive keyword or a non competitive keyword? Do you have high keyword density on the main page now? How many links do you have pointing to your main page? If you do split up your pages you might lose your rankings. Also you will be changing the destination of the pages so you might be starting from scratch. You might consider keeping the main page and adding the second page with a link prominantly on your main page. This way you keep your rankings. You need to be careful with how you move forward. How long have you been ranking for this keyword? You also need to make a business decision on whether or not making the change is better for your business than keeping the rankings. If you determine that your site will be much better for the user and generate better conversions from visitors to buyers then it might make sense to take the ranking hit start a Plc campaign and work with a white hat seo pro to regain rankings.

Would You Redirect a Page if the Parent Page was Redirected?
Hi everyone! Let's use this as an example URL: https://www.example.com/marvel/avengers/hulk/ We have done a 301 redirect for the "Avengers" page to another page on the site. Sibling pages of the "Hulk" page live off "marvel" now (ex: /marvel/thor/ and /marvel/iron-man/). Is there any benefit in doing a 301 for the "Hulk" page to live at /marvel/hulk/ like it's sibling pages? Is there any harm long-term in leaving the "Hulk" page under a permanently redirected page? Thank you! Matt

Multiple Landing Pages and Backlinks
I have a client that does website contract work for about 50 governmental county websites. The client has the ability to add a link back in the footer of each of these websites. I am wanting my client to get backlink juice for a different key phrase from each of the 50 agencies (basically just my keyphrase with the different county name in it). I also want a different landing page to rank for each term. The 50 different landing pages would be a bit like location pages for local search. Each one targets a different county. However, I do not have a lot of unique content for each page. Basically each page would follow the same format (but reference a different county name, and 10 different links from each county website). Is this a good SEO back link strategy? Do I need more unique content for each landing page in order to prevent duplicate content flags?

Do Page Views Matter? (ranking factor?)
Hi, I actually asked it a year and a half ago (with a slight variation) but didn't get any real response and things do change over time. On my eCommerce website I have the main category pages with client side filtering and sorting. As a result, the number of page views is lower than can be expected. Do you think having more page views is still a ranking factor? and if so is it more important than user experience? Thanks

"No index" page still shows in search results and paginated pages shows page 2 in results
I have "no index, follow" on some pages, which I set 2 weeks ago. Today I see one of these pages showing in Google Search Results. I am using rel=next prev on pages, yet Page 2 of a string of pages showed up in results before Page 1. What could be the issue?

Getting a Home Page to Rank
Hi Mozzers, My question specifically has to do with optimizing a home page for specific keywords, but still keeping the design clean and not cluttered.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Travis-W
How do you guys prefer to go about it? Currently our home page only really gets traffic for branded keywords (though we do have some rankings for real keywords showing in GWT which I can't really explain). I know how to write content for specific long-tail keywords, but we want to keep our homepage very clean, not filled with gobs of text. Right now my main plan is to display content under a "Read More.." button.
What do you pros suggest? Thanks!0 -
WIll Splash Page Triggered Only for iPhones Hurt SEO
Background We are in the process of launching a website where ticket inventory and processing are handled by a third party. Our primary means of traffic generation (at least at first) will be through SEO traffic. One of the things that they require of us is a script that will detect people with an iPhone and, upon entering the site, display a page giving people the option to call for help or continue to the site. (see attached screenshot) We will still get credit for the transaction (tracked through the phone #) and they say that this increases conversion rate, so it is something that we would like to use, unless it will affect our ability to rank in mobile. Problem My concern is that we will be penalized by Google (or rank poorly in Mobile search) because the page that iPhone users (not iPad users) are served is hosted on a different domain and not optimized at all for the keywords people are searching for. This is obviously a non-issue if Google never sees the page, but I have heard that Google will emulate different devices when crawling pages. Question Can anyone provide any insight about this? I feel like we are adding value to customers by giving them the option to speak to customer support, but I'm afraid that Google will think we are cloaking or at best providing the same page to anyone entering with an iPhone. Here is a link to the soon-to-be-launched website:http://dev.concerttickets.com.vhost.zerolag.com/ -- so you can check it out on your iPhone. Is there a possibility that this could effect SEO traffic from other devices? Any suggests will or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! EP1nA EP1nA EP1nA.png

Scrolling Text Old School SEO and hidden index page
We have taken over a site and now find our self looking at the homepage of the site which has hidden scrolling text. A old school way of adding text without leaving loads of paragraphs. I have also removed all links to the index.htm page but somewhere visitors are still coming to this page in there droves. I am considering using a canonical url code but I would rather nip it in the bud. Would love some feedback from some other experts here is the site - http://www.radiatorcentre.com You never stop learning in seo and maybe we can all learn from this example. Thanks
