1 page 2 keywords?
-
Hello folks,
I have a problem with optimizing a page for 2 different keywords. Here is the situation:
On-page: Both keywords in title; both words in body text (I didn't count them but approximately 3-4 times for 100 words in total)
Off-page: Exact anchor text from article directories, Synonym & Brand anchors from directories. My link building shcedule is as inconsistent as possible. I just keep around 50 links per week. I do social sharing, guest blogging with exact/synonym anchor text links and also I link to other pages across the whole site. I try to avoid site bar and footer links although I have some because it's partner links, I didn't buy them. I even asked web masters to put nofollow tag to those link after the drop because I was concerned that Penguin considers them bought links.
The result: 1st keyword is going quite well, it reached 5th postion but after that dropped to the second page, which more or less I can explain with various factors such as overal keyword competition, maybe penguin thought that some links are spammy.
The problem is that the second keyword is disaster. I found it in SERP after 1 month hard work on 17th page and now it is swinging between 14th and 17th page. Honestly, I am confused. Is it possible that link building with 2 keywords to the same page creates self canibalization of some kind?
Just to remind that the 2 keywords are quite different, i,e. there are not related as synonyms or similar. Do you guys have had similar problem?
Thanks in advance for your advice

Thanks Andrea, that is already done, I use lots of different anchors and lots of different pages to link to.
-
I thought the same, but actually this keyword is even more relevant to the domain than the 1st keyword.
Both keywords are relevant to the page and to the domain as a whole BUT the keywords are not so closely relevant to each other.
-
Thanks for the advice, the strange thing is that the better performing word is on the second place in title. Also I have noticed a competitor which ranks well for 2 similar (also competitive) keywords and has 0 times the first word in body text!!! Just both keywords in title. This competitor has 3 times (on average) more linking domains and links than my site and is on the second page, while I am struggling between 14th and 17th..
-
Hi both keywords are highly competitive. The 1st keyword is 60% and the second is 69% (the second keyword is the one I am having problems with).
There are pages above my page in SERP for my second keyword with significantly lower links profile.

I agree with everyone, and keep in mind that exact keyword anchor text can look spammy. So, aside from just the links, shake up the anchor text so it also doesn't look as spammy. http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2172839/Google-Penguin-Update-Impact-of-Anchor-Text-Diversity-Link-Relevancy

Is the second keyword less related to the overall theme of your site?
If your site is selling "chocolate mousse" and the second keyword is "anaphalctic shock" then I wouldn't be surprised if you were struggling to rank. That's an extreme example but you get the point?
-
There are some basics to look at. How are your Title tags? Google gives more relevance to your first keyword in your title tag. Example: Local Real Estate / Local Homes for sale . In this case google will give more weight to the local Real Estate keyword than the second.
That is why most SEO pro's will recommend to focus on one keyword per page. That does mean you would need two great pages and to link build for both. Hard work yes but in the long term will benefit you.
Otherwise you will need to make sure that one page is optimized for both keywords and your link building efforts focuses on both keywords.
- Google frowns on buying links so don't do it
- Google doesn't like spamming sites for links
- They also don't like link exchanges.
- Keywords above the fold are important also
Hope this helps

Have you take a look to "Keyword Difficulty" tool of SEOmoz?? Maybe these words are more difficult to rank. Can you give us more information??

Content of the Product Page
Hi Everybody : how can you tell if the content on the product pages are accessible by google ? please have a look at my product page : http://www.fireplaceproducts.co.uk/stoves/aarrow-stoves/aarrow-ecoburn-defra-wood-burning-stove/ i used classes in product page to set the key features, construction ,... i notices other companies done these as text and they get better ranks do you think that's the reason ? also to test that i added the text exact same as the key features , construction ,... as additional information at the end of the product page , would you thin that would be considered as duplication ? Kind Regards Arta

Can a page be penalised by Google but not the entire site?
I have recently given some content to another site for a link. When I originally checked the site, it was indexed by Google and seemed ok. However, when I tried to check that the catergory page that my content was posted on was indexed, I received and error message from Google, however the homepage is still being indexed by Google. Is that the sign of a penalty or not?

Self-cannibalizing issue with category page
I am doing well with a category page and I just ran a report card and am having issues with self-cannibalizing. I have a signature at the bottom of each blog post that links to this category page because it is my MAIN category. So I changed the anchor text so it didn't have the exact same keyword but underneath each post, it shows all the categories that post belongs to. Usually it is at least 2. So should I change the name of the category page and then have the SEO title be for the keyword I am ranking well with? Or should I just self-cannibalize? Or should I not have all the categories show underneath each post? I was thinking that would help lower my bounce rate since it would lead them to another page that interests them. Edit: To be clear, all these links are linking to that very category page. So linking back to itself. They are not linking to a different page with the target keyword. Also I am worried about reducing internal linking power if the anchor text is not the keyword I am trying to rank with? Help appreciated!

Why is my domain authority 1?
Hello all, I have my own MMA news website which I started almost two years ago. After getting a Seomoz account I noticed that my domain authority for this website (www.mmaplanet.nl) is 1! All my other websites have 'normal' domain authority. Does someone know what might be the problem here? Thanks in advance!

How to target keywords on a new site?
I have a site I launched a few months back, and the niche isn't all that competitive. After a bit of work the domain is now sitting near the bottom of page 2 on google but it's number 2 in yahoo search. I have been manually building the links but they are all targeted to just one keyword, and mainly have the same link text. Will this look suspicious to google, and should I be spreading my anchor text over different keywords? Or is the reason Im ranking so well in yahoo be because they are just picking up more backlinks? 23 from yahoo but only 9 from google.

Ranking dropping for certain keyword
Hi There, Just wondering what has happened to my rankings as I cant seem to understand it. In the past week we've dropped from page 1 to page 10 for a certain keyword. The URL is also different that google displays - instead of displaying the individual page it now just links to the main domain. All the other keywords have remained consistent and some have improved. The page is still in the Google Index if I manually search for it. There hasn't been any dramatic change to the page except I've created a few links to it. Have we been penalized by Google and is there anything I can do?

Longer Tail Keyword for URL and Anchor text
Hello If I am trying to rank for the term blue widgets as a primary, and also the term shiny blue widgets , and big shiny blue widgets as secondary - would the url /blue-widgets or /shiny-blue-widgets or /big-shiny-blue-widgets be better (all else equal) Would the word shiny / big dilute or affect of KW in the domain for the rankings for blue widgets (all esle equal) Regarding anchor text of inbound links, if the anchor text is shiny blue widgets, is that going to help me rank for both queries "blue widgets" and "shiny blue widgets" equally? (all else equal), or would including shiny, affect my ranking for "bliue widgets" Or is it better to keep the anchor text as just blue widgets (of course we could vary it) but Im trying to get a feel for how that would work as we are builfing some links I can control the anchor text. I hope this was clear enough Thanks Sam
