Indexed pages and current pages - Big difference?
-
Our website shows ~22k pages in the sitemap but ~56k are showing indexed on Google through the "site:" command. Firstly, how much attention should we paying to the discrepancy? If we should be worried what's the best way to find the cause of the difference?
The domain canonical is set so can't really figure out if we've got a problem or not?

Hi Nathan,
The delta between the number of pages returned by the site: operator and the number of pages in your sitemap could be down to a number of issues:
- Your XML sitemap may represent only a percentage of the total number of valid content URLs that your site is capable of generating.
a) Often sites will only generate XML sitemaps for URLs that someone has decided are "important", when the total number of URLs is much larger.
- Your XML sitemap contains ALL the valid content URLs that your site is capable of generating, but search engines are somehow finding more URLs.
a) Look in Google Webmaster Tools under Optimization >> HTML improvements >> Duplicate title tags
i) Do the pages with duplicate titles have duplicate page content? If so, your publishing platform is allowing multiple URLs to render the same content, which is a bug that needs to be fixed
b) Run a crawler like Xenu Link Sleuth or Screaming Frog against your site, and see how many URLs they discover. Export the results to Excel and look for weird URLs
i) Usually culprits for duplicate content include incorrect canonicalization (www vs non-www, URLs ending in /index.html vs just /, etc)
ii) Look for URLs ending with strange query strings (affiliate tracking, session IDs, etc)
c) Use the site: operator in other engines (Bing, blekko, etc) and compare the numbers they return. Especially if this number is larger than the number Google is returning, starting looking for weird URL patterns
Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "the domain canonical has been set correctly". If you're referring to use of the canonical link element for every URL, there are plenty of ways that can go wrong. E.g., if your CMS requires that each published URL have rel="canonical", but allows URLs to be published with and without the trailing /index.html, you can end up with a canonical link element on the non-canonical version of the URL, further confusing engines. Something to look into.

You might have a duplicate content issue. You will want to check if you have the proper 301 redirect and a canonical command in the head of your code. If you don't have this set properly then the search engines will see the www and non-www versions of your site as duplicate. Also remember that the search engines also by default place this at the end of the url /
Here are two links that can help if this is the issue.

Hope this helps. Good Luck

Yes this is a potentially significant problem. The easiest way to troubleshoot is to do the 'site:' command again, and go to the last page of results. You should be seeing pages that aren't in your sitemap. Very likely duplicated content.
If you are having a rough time troubleshooting, post a link and I'll be glad to take a peek.

Google keeps marking different pages as duplicates
My website has many pages like this: mywebsite/company1/valuation mywebsite/company2/valuation mywebsite/company3/valuation mywebsite/company4/valuation ... These pages describe the valuation of each company. These pages were never identical but initially, I included a few generic paragraphs like what is valuation, what is a valuation model, etc... in all the pages so some parts of these pages' content were identical. Google marked many of these pages as duplicated (in Google Search Console) so I modified the content of these pages: I removed those generic paragraphs and added other information that is unique to each company. As a result, these pages are extremely different from each other now and have little similarities. Although it has been more than 1 month since I made the modification, Google still marks the majority of these pages as duplicates, even though Google has already crawled their new modified version. I wonder whether there is anything else I can do in this situation? Thanks

Over 500 thin URLs indexed from dynamically created pages (for lightboxes)
I have a client who has a resources section. This section is primarily devoted to definitions of terms in the industry. These definitions appear in colored boxes that, when you click on them, turn into a lightbox with their own unique URL. Example URL: /resources/?resource=dlna The information for these lightboxes is pulled from a standard page: /resources/dlna. Both are indexed, resulting in over 500 indexed pages that are either a simple lightbox or a full page with very minimal content. My question is this: Should they be de-indexed? Another option I'm knocking around is working with the client to create Skyscraper pages, but this is obviously a massive undertaking given how many they have. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Is my page being indexed?
To put you all in context, here is the situation, I have pages that are only accessible via an intern search tool that shows the best results for the request. Let's say i want to see the result on page 2, the page 2 will have a request in the url like this: ?p=2&s=12&lang=1&seed=3688 The situation is that we've disallowed every URL's that contains a "?" in the robots.txt file which means that Google doesn't crawl the page 2,3,4 and so on. If a page is only accessible via page 2, do you think Google will be able to access it? The url of the page is included in the sitemap. Thank you in advance for the help!

Home Page Ranking Instead of Service Pages
Hi everyone! I've noticed that many of our clients have pages addressing specific queries related to specific services on their websites, but that the Home Page is increasingly showing as the "ranking" page. For example, a plastic surgeon we work with has a page specifically talking about his breast augmentation procedure for Miami, FL but instead of THAT page showing in the search results, Google is using his home page. Noticing this across the board. Any insights? Should we still be optimizing these specific service pages? Should I be spending time trying to make sure Google ranks the page specifically addressing that query because it SHOULD perform better? Thanks for the help. Confused SEO :/, Ricky Shockley

What to do when you want the category page and landing page to be the same thing?
I'm working on structuring some of my content better and I have a dilemma. I'm using wordpress and I have a main category called "Therapy." Under therapy I want to have a few sub categories such as "physical therapy" "speech therapy" "occupational therapy" to separate the content. The url would end up being mysite/speech-therapy. However, those are also phrases I want to create a landing page for. So I'd like to have a page like mysite.com/speech-therapy that I could optimize and help people looking for those terms find some of the most helpful content on our site for those certain words. I know I can't have 2 urls that are the same, but I'm hoping someone can give me some feedback on the best way to about this. Thanks.

I happened to notice that trophycentral.com and www.trophycentral.com have two different page ranks even though there is a 301 redirect. Should I be concerned? http://trophycentral.com Page Authority: 47 Domain Authority: 42 http://www.trophycentral.com Page Authority: 51 Domain Authority: 42 Thanks!

Duplicate index.php/webpage pages on website. Help needed!
Hi Guys, Having a really frustrating problem with our website. It is a Joomla 1.7 site and we have some duplicate page issues. What is happening is that we have a webpage, lets say domain.com/webpage1 and then we also have domain.com/index.php/webpage1. Google is seeing these as duplicate pages and is causing me some real SEO problems. I have tried setting up a 301 redirect but it wn't let me redirect /index.php/webpage1 to /webpage1. Anyone have any ideas or plugins that can be used to sort this out? Any help will be really appreciated! Matt.

Page not being indexed
Hi all, On our site we have a lot of bookmaker reviews, and we are ranking pretty good for most bookmaker names as keywords, however a single bookmaker seems to have been shunned by Google. For a search "betsafe" in Denmark, this page does not appear among the top 50: http://www.betxpert.com/bookmakere/betsafe All of our other review pages rank in top 10-20 for the bookmaker name as keyword. What to do if Google has "banned" a page? Best regards, Rasmus
