Why did my traffic from USA decline so much?
-
Our website (http://www.golfbutler.com) has been running since April 2010.
For the first year or so, traffic from the USA counted for more than 70% of the total traffic.
Then for about 6-9 months the traffic incoming from the USA slowly declined to 40-50%.
For the last 2-3 months the USA traffic further reduced to about 5% of the total traffic.
All the while our content focus did not change much. It is still heavily targeting USA.
All in all our traffic did not change much, other countries picked up the pace, particularly Canada.
We are located in Canada but our server is hosted in the USA.
Anybody has an idea why our USA traffic has declined so much?
Since 50% of all golfers are in USA, I would expect at least 50% of our traffic coming from there.
We do not run any online advertizing so this cannot be the issue.
Thanks!

I did not set a target country as we welcome visitor for every country and have data that can be relevant for most of them.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
-
Have you verified your site in Google Webmaster Tools? There's an option to set the country you're targeting in there.
-
Referral traffic is almost nonexistent, less than 5%.
I've been analyzing Analytics reports and cannot find a reason there. Which is why I'm suspecting Google classifies my site as regional for Canada or something.
-
How much of your traffic is referral vs direct? that will start to help you with the answer...
For a long time I had a referral from india, when they stopped linking to my trafic from the country dropped by 50%...
Google analytics is your friend...

Ranking impact: Traffic in website pages vs sub directory vs sub domain
Hi all, I need clarification on this. Not every time website main pages rank, some times even pages from sub directories or sub domains like blogs or guides; especially for branded keywords. I just wonder what happens when so much traffic is generating in sub directories and sub domains just because of limited landing pages in main website. Will this traffic be counted as traffic in main website as per Google? Traffic increase in main website really an ranking factor? Will the "brand + topic" related keywords' traffic is more for a website; will it ranking improves even for "topic keywords"? Thanks

Lost 75% of my traffic on Oct 25, help appreciated
So I've been running coolquotescollection.com since 1997 (!) as a hobby project. I lost about 75% of my organic search traffic on the 25th of October, literally overnight. I've been doing a lot of research but I still don't know why I was penalized. Image attached. I naturally thought this was because of Penguin (Oct 17, my drop was Oct 25). However, after checking backlinks I only discovered 11 domains with about 100-400 links each, the major ones were forum signatures and blog sidebars, 6 domains were spam sites / directories. They almost exclusively used the same anchor text (domain name or similar), so this doesn't seem like a black hat attack. Some of the directories used keywords in their urls however (like "funny quotes").

1. Is this really enough for such a heavy penalty?
I added these domains to be disavowed today, I'm aware this might take weeks or months to change. I've automated so that pictures gets uploaded to my Facebook page with a link to my page. This started in early 2014.
2. Can Facebook links be considered link spam?
They don't even show up in webmaster tools.
Example: https://www.facebook.com/CoolQuotesCollection/photos/a.510328825689624.1073741825.326096120779563/615403025182203/?type=1&theater I analyzed keywords and the major ones dropped between 2 and 6 positions. Notable exception: I seem to still rank nr 1 for "cool movie quotes" even though page is not optimized for that keyword. Moz warned about over 5000 pages with duplicate content. It was a single page that used a querystring url parameter I have excluded in webmaster tools. I have now entered a canonical link on these pages. Example:
http://coolquotescollection.com/Home/TShirts?url=http-url-example...
http://coolquotescollection.com/Home/TShirts?url=http-another-url.......
3. Could the Google algo penalize this even though I have excluded the "url" parameter? I have a lot of internal links in the page navigation. Can this cause problems? See the absolute bottom of this page where I have 94 links for example: http://coolquotescollection.com/laughs
4. Could a lot of internal links (navigation to page numbers) be the problem? Some more facts: Site is http://coolquotescollection.com/ Domain is 14 years old. The web site launched in Sep 1997, a year before Google! (Not relevant but you might understand why this is important to me). I haven't done any SEO work for at least 12 months, probably closer to two years. The only SEO work I've done is to optimize the pages, no link building at all, no black hat stuff. I'm automatically building a sitemap that contains all pages, see here: http://coolquotescollection.com/robots.txt I've used webmaster tools for years, haven't gotten any warnings. I checked backlinks there, also here from moz and ahrefs. I'm annoyed that a quality content site can be penalized so hard (75% drop) when there are no, or just smaller issues. I'm just lucky this is not my business site, if so I would have gone out of business. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated! z3yFNdb.png Cci7vfI.png0 -
How to Interpret Rankings Decline
My website operates in 14 languages, and overall we have not seen a decrease in traffic (hard to measure because we are very vulnerable to external factors) I started using AWR about a month ago and in that time have seen the following changes in my visibility for some of my major markets: Nothing major in either direction, but any advice of how to delve deeper to find an explanation for the markets that are decreasing? UK: 15% ->13% RU: 25 -> 26% AU: 25% -> 21% DE: 18% - 19% ES: 11% -> 10% SE: 42% -> 44%

Impressions & Traffic WAY Down. Where to start?
Beginning around November 1st, I began to notice a continual, gradual drop in impressions and traffic. During the holiday season we typically see a decline in business so I initially passed it off as that, but there has been no rebound and I'm really confused on where to begin looking to figure this out. Daily impressions have now dropped from 20,000 all the way down to 5,000 and it has taken a major toll on the business (see attachment for graph of this). Some Background Information: My Site has been very static for the past 8 month's (since April '12). Admittedly Overly static with very little other than a blog post here and there added. However, during these 8 month's traffic jumped 30% so we were riding that wave and feeling confident that our past efforts built a great foundation. I'm not aware of anything even remotely black hat that has ever been done. Everything is very much on the up and up and done with the user in mind. I'm unable to track anything to a Panda update due to the consistent, gradual nature of the decline. However, with some important search queries completely falling off the map, it feels to me like we are being penalized or affected by a permanent algo change. In GWMT that are a variety of important search queries that show a change of -100%. These terms do show an average position, but when I manually search for them they are no where to be found in Google search results. This is very strange to me. It feels like we've been blacklisted for some of our more important keywords. We had a major site relaunch on January 20th (a week ago). However the downward trend was in place well before this. The site is www.mycreativeshop.com To sum it up, I'm extremely confused and very concerned with what this drop is doing to the company. I've never been in this position as we've worked very hard to lay a solid foundation and have always seen a continual, positive traffic increase. It then seemed to just start turning downward one day and won't stop. If anybody has some suggestions of how to try to get to the bottom of this and learn what is really taking place it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, -J Wdab7Sk

How to find which keywords bring traffic to a particular page on my website ?
I have been using Google Analytics and SEOMoz tools for a while now. I know which are my top landing pages and some of the keywords which bring me traffic. But I don't know which are the top searched keywords for my website as these are "not provided" by Google Analytics. More importantly, I want to know which keywords are directing traffic to a particular page on my website. Can anyone help ?

First page slot 1 spot doesn't equal global monthly traffic
We have a client who has occupied the top spot on Google for the past several months. According to the Google Adwords keyword suggestion tool, this keyword should generate around 5,000 Global and Local Monthly average visits. Trends show this keyword has consistent month over month traffic. The keyword search type is broad match. When we look at analytics, they're only getting 5 visits per month. Shouldn't the top spot get the lion's share of traffic? We've noticed this trend on several of our clients whose traffic doesn't really increase proportionate to the estimated search volume that Google returns in the Adwords tool. Ideas? We see the estimated traffic and tell clients, "Once we get you in that top organic slot, you'll get most of that traffic," but it's not correlating. Thanks so much.

Is Bing an Important search engine for traffic
Hi I would like to know if Bing is an important search engine for traffic. I have submitted my site to bing http://www.chesterhypnotherapy.com which is currently off line as i have just transfered it to a new hosting company and i have found in the past that i get very little traffic from it. On average i would say i get around five a day where as with google i gets lots of traffic. I have submitted a site map to bing but that has not increased traffic. Can anyone let me know for bing is an important search engine if you are targeting customers from the UK and if it is, does anyone have any ideas of how to increase traffic through bing

(Ireland & USA) Speilling 'Z' v's 'S'
Hi, My site is called ExampleVirtualisation.ie it's only new but when I type Example Virtualistion (the S in the word) into Google.ie The suggestive spelling for Example virtualiztion (with the Z) keeps coming up. When I click the Suggestion Spelling with Example Virtualiztion (Z) another website arrives in position 1. My site is not being reconised for the Z type spelling. How can I get found? I was thinking of purchasing the ExampleVirtualiztion.ie (Z) as well & redirecting to my S spelling site. Also optimising my title & des tags with both S & Z spellings. I've only recently submitted my sitemap.xml in Google -hopefully this will help my site to be found. Apologies if the Questions sounds a bit tricky, Your advise is welcome thank you.
