What is the most effective eCommerce product / category structure?
-
Hi all,
We sell musical equipment, and we have been debating about how to structure our website in terms of products and categories.
These are our two options:
- Each category page lists sub-categories _and _all of the products contained within each of these sub-categories, so e.g. the "Guitars" category page would contain links to "Electric Guitars" and "Acoustic Guitars" as well as a big list of electric and acoustic guitars.
- Each category page lists only its sub-categories, unless it is a "leaf" node, in which case it lists all the products, so e.g. category "Guitars" just has two links - to "Electric Guitars" and "Acoustic Guitars" - and no products.
Option 2 means customers don't see products until they've decided which category they want, which doesn't seem ideal to me, but SEO-wise, which is best?
Thanks!
Alex

I agree with Sparkplug here. Go with the flat site-architecture (option 1). What I'd do is use your category page design to clearly separate the sub-category links from the individual product links.
List all subcategory links then decide which individual products are most interesting to users viewing that category page. Try to keep these to a select few to prevent user overwhelm.
This way your most important product pages are easily indexed and have some category-level link juice directed to them.

Option 1 would send more link authority (i.e. "link juice") to your specific product pages where the conversion will take place. This is also known as a flat site architecture (which is generally recommended) where there are fewer levels in your site hierarchy. As long as there are not an overwhelming number of products (which could hurt the user experience) option 1 is better for SEO in my opinion because the product pages will receive more link authority and have a better chance of ranking well in search results. If you have more than say about 20 products on each category page, then option 2 starts to seem more attractive for two reasons. First, the user experience is worsened as the page clutters up with too many options (see The Paradox of Choice) and also each additional link on the page will dilute the amount of link authority that is passed to each individual link.

Hi Alex,
If I understand, you'd like to stick to a silo structure and group each category >> products ?!
I've tested and worked with this issue so many times and here is what I find to work best for me
The first thing you need to do is create the best user experience you possibly can and that means if you feel like your visitors would like to see all products up front, you should definitely do that
however if you are concerned about keeping your site in clean silos you can still add "rel=nofollow" tags to all product links on the category page, and only after user selects a category show all products w/ do follow links
or if you really know your way you can go with option 1 and also have all products on the category page but in an iFrame, the same idea both, the user gets to see all your products but the SE still follows a clean structure where all products are where they should be
Hope this helps

Index / Monthly Click Number
Hi,
On-Page Optimization | | HypermediaSystems
This is a general question, so sorry in advance if inappropriate. Once I was told, in large scale EC / Forum Site,
the following number should be around 1,
and if it is below 1, it is a good sign ... Google Indexed Page Number / Monthly ( 30days ) Click Number I was told this is just a general idea, and real world situation varies, then
if you don't have any standard, this could be a start. (not dogmatic rules, just reference) Does this sounds about right? or do you have any other formula? I was tasked to do the site wide SEO, and diagnose the general state of SEO-wellness/fitness..
and right now, the number is 1.5, so I am about to report we can do more to get more SERP presence or something... If you guys point me relevant blog article / Q&A forum, I would really appreciate. Thanks!0 -
Category descriptions and magento
Hi Any eCommerce experts out there, please? I run a magento store and am looking to improve the performance of my category pages in the listings, to aid this I have created category descriptions - a hundred or so words about what, for example, a Maxi Dress is, an example can be seen here http:// yochic.co.uk/dress-267864/ maxi.html (I have broken the link as not sure on the linking policy of the forum). I have noticed, however, that this category description is appearing all on sub pages of the section, so it is on page 1,2,3,4 etc. Is this likely to lead to me receiving a penalty for internal duplicate content? The store uses rel="next" in all the category pages, so shouldn't that help limit any problems caused by the duplication of the page descriptions? I notice that when I search for a sub page, 2, 3, 4 etc in Google using the url of page two http://yochic.co.uk/dress-267864/maxi.html?p=2 it returns the first page, so am i right in thinking with the tags that Google sees all the sub pages as being page one. In which case, doesn't that limit my ability to rank for the products listed on pages 2+? Long story short, the site cannot rank it's product pages because the vast majority of the product descriptions are 100% duplicate because the site is an affiliate fashion store. Many thanks Carl

2 Question about URL structure
Hello guys 1 - I have a question about the best structure for URLs from the point of view of SEO: Is it OK to use the URL as mywebsite.com.br/long-tail-article Or is better this mywebsite.com.br/category/long-tail-article 2 - When part of my keyword is already in my "category", for example: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing/digital-marketing-is-good I leave it as it is, or in the following way: mywebsite.com.br/digital-marketing-is-good NOTE: Do not take into account that this URL would be different from other URLs in this category

How much copy should there be on an e-commerce category page?
I'm not looking for a precise number, obviously. I'm more interested in a general range. More text means more long-tail and synonym opportunities, but of course you don't want too much copy above the fold, pushing your products down. Maybe you can get away with a short paragraph or two at the top of the page. You can always put more copy below the products, but in a recent SEOmoz e-commerce webinar, the presenter seemed to think that was silly and unnecessary. He even suggested that the algo might intentionally ignore text below products, since it's clearly not intended to be read. What do you think?

Titles for WP feeds and categories
SeoMoz comes back with duplicate title errors. However these duplicate errors are /feed pages in Wordpress. http://www.guardianpoolfence.com/choose-pool-fence/feed/ http://www.guardianpoolfence.com/how-to-choose-pool-fence/feed/ Why does this happening with only selected pages? I have many more posts but only these two are coming up with duplicate title errors. Also how do I set up meta descriptions for categories and archive pages for example www.guardianpoolfence.com/2011/07 I am not sure how these pages were created and how to give these individual titles. I mean, titles at all... Anyone?
