Index / Monthly Click Number
-
Hi,
This is a general question, so sorry in advance if inappropriate.Once I was told, in large scale EC / Forum Site,
the following number should be around 1,
and if it is below 1, it is a good sign ...Google Indexed Page Number / Monthly ( 30days ) Click Number
I was told this is just a general idea, and real world situation varies, then
if you don't have any standard, this could be a start. (not dogmatic rules, just reference)Does this sounds about right? or do you have any other formula?
I was tasked to do the site wide SEO, and diagnose the general state of SEO-wellness/fitness..
and right now, the number is 1.5, so I am about to report we can do more to get more SERP presence or something...If you guys point me relevant blog article / Q&A forum, I would really appreciate.
Thanks!

I think I understand. It can definitely be tough to work out the right metrics to evaluate a site's search potential, or even the right metrics to report down the line.
To be perfectly honest, I don't think you'll learn much from the numbers you're talking about. There are just so many variables—size of site, marketing strategy, product offering, and specific goals are only a few—that a formula like that can't be universally applicable. Plus, there's the simple fact that in a vacuum a click is pretty much worthless. Who's clicking? Why? Why do you _want _them to? Where are they landing? What did they search for? What are they looking for?
This isn't quite so concrete, but start by thinking about what you want to get from your SEO work. Is it just more clicks? Is it more conversions? Is it greater brand visibility?
Patrick gave a really, really good list of educational resources that might help you wrap your head around everything, but I'd actually recommend starting with the Beginner's Guide to SEO. For the sake of your question, you may want to focus on Chapter 10, Measuring and Tracking Success. That should give you a good sense of what constitutes "success" from an SEO perspective. I also recommend this checklist for a technical SEO audit, which will give you a much better idea of what kind of work you've got ahead of you. (If it looks kind of screwy, it's because of our recent blog redesign. Working on it!)

Hi,
Thank you for good information, I will look into it.
My situation is like this (due to the NDA cannot reveal exact site):
Google Indexed: 150k pages
Clicks Daily: 3k
Impressions Daily: 10kSo to evaluate the general state of SEO readiness of the entire site, and to plan next move,
I needed to some entry point, including to know how to evaluate THAT NUMBER...
3k clicks are enough? with these pages indexed? Is there any improvements on traffic?
Is it CTR or should we think of SERP? etc...And those numbers have to convert...
I feel like a bit lost,,, so studying while planning...
Thanks again...

Yeah, I'm also not familiar with that. Are you basing your report on the site's SEO on that number?

Hi there
I am a bit confused - are you saying that if I have 200 pages indexed in Google, and I have a 40 clicks to my site, that the 5 is an indication of bad SERP performance? Just using your formula:
200 / 40 = 5
I guess that's an okay rule of thumb as you would ideally want every page indexed on your site to be clicked at least once if it's ranked, I just have never heard of that rule.
If you're goal (I am not saying it is) is for every page to be clicked, then yes, 1 or lower would be good because it showed every page is showing up in SERPs. I wouldn't use this as the sole basis of your indexing and SEO performance however, as this doesn't tell you if ALL pages were clicked, or if one page was clicked overall. There's so much more digging you have to do.
Check these resources out: Google Analytics Academy (Google)
Analytics Help (Google)
On-Site SEO (Moz) Moz Academy (Moz)
Local Search Ranking Factors (Moz)
A Technical SEO Guide to Crawling, Indexing, and Ranking (Paddy Moogan)
Internal Linking (Moz)All of the above will help you way more than the equation you stated above. Again, it's a nice way of thinking about it if you want to just look at those two numbers, but you're not taking into account a LOT of elements. For instance, that number could equate to .01 but that doesn't mean a lot of pages are necessarily getting traffic or appearing in search. The resources I listed will help you better assess your search and organic performance. You'll get so much more out of it and think of things you never thought to track.
Hope this helps you! Let me know if you have any questions or comments! Good luck!

Page/Website Structure
Hello again Mozzers, We have a category, lets call it widgets. Within widgets are about a hundred or so products. For usability my predecessor made the following layout Widgets Main Cateogry - Links off homepage - (no content just links to the 3 sub-categories)
On-Page Optimization | | ATP
- Widgets by Resolution
---- About 20 subcategories
eg. 0.1 Resolution widgets
0.2 resolution widgets
- Widgets by Capacity
---- About 20 subcategories
eg. 1 capacity widgets
2 capacity widgets
- Widgets by Type
---- About 12 subcategories This was a major improvement from a userbility perspective as it made a very complex product range navigatable by the major features or basic type. However, as you can imaging we now have 60+ very similiar pages all displaying very similiar products a nightmare for SEO. It also isnt ideal for user navigation as it take too many clicks to get to the products. I propose the following fix, and i wanted your opinion. Widget Main Category - Link from homepage (Consolidated with Widgets by Type)
-300 Words of content
-Links to the 12 Sub-type Catoregies (These are pages i can fill with content + products. This would give me a more ordinary structure of which I can focus each page to a keyword) The tricky part comes with incorporating the capacity and resolution options. 1 Browse Capacity Page
(20 sub categories all the same except capacity quantity & products)
1 Browse by Resolution Page
(20 sub categories all the same except resolution value & products) The owner want them, I was going to link from the main widgets page to each of these to give the customer the option. What I can't decide is how to deal with them from an SEO point of view. Should they be no-followed? canonicaled? Can there be any advantage to having so many pages covering slightly different variations or as i suspect it is dangerous to the overall health of the site. To complicate things further, Canonical tags may not be an option due to an old magento version running that doesnt support them. Is there an alternative way around? As always many thanks.0 -

Sudden drop in ranking for important keyword? No penalty / other issues detected
Hi For our site we previously ranked well for the term "botswana safari holidays" on the page: http://www.naturalworldsafaris.com/destinations/africa-and-the-indian-ocean/botswana.aspx We've suddenly seen a dramatic drop for this term, currently ranked #43 on Google UK. There are no penalty notices in Webmaster tools and the only edits to the page recently have been to include the term "Botswana safari holidays" in the page title and the on-page h2 (previously Botswana safaris and holidays). Any suggestions why we have seen a large decrease for this term? We expect to see some fluctuation but this one seems a bit dramatic. We've not lost any backlinks to the page that we know of. Thanks for the help.

Boat broker - issues with duplicate content and indexing search results
Hello, I have read a lot about optimising product pages and not indexing search results or category pages as ideally a person should be directed straight to a product page. I am interested in how best to approach a site that is listing second hand products for sale - essentially a marketplace of second hand goods (in my case, www.boatshed.com - international boat brokers). For example, we currently have 5 Colvic Sailer 26 boats for sale across the world - that is 5 boats of the same make and model but differing years, locations, sellers and prices. My concern is with search results and 'category' pages. Unlike typical e-commerce sites, when someone searches for a 'Colvic sailer 26 for sale' I want them to go to a search results style page as it is more useful for them to see a list of boats than one random one that Google decides is most important (or possibly one it can match by location). Currently we have 3 different URL types to show search results style pages (i.e. paginated lists of boats that include name, image and short description):
On-Page Optimization | | pbscreative
manufacturer URL's e.g. http://www.boatshed.com/colvic-manufacturer-145.html
category URL's e.g. barges http://www.boatshed.com/barges-category-55.html
and normal search results e.g. dosearch.php?form_boattype_textbox=&.... I have noindexed the search results pages but our category and manufacturer URLs show up in search results and ultimately these are pages I want people to land on. I am however getting duplicate content warnings in Moz. Most boats are in several categories and all will come up on 1 manufacturer and one manufacturer and model page. Both sets of URL's are in my opinion needed; lots of users search for exact makes / models and lots of users just search for the type of boat e.g. 'barge for sale' so both sets of landing pages are useful. Any suggestions or thoughts greatly appreciated Thanks Ben0 -
Why Isnt My New Article Indexed?
I posted this article last night: http://www.londontri.com/325/tomtom-runner-gps-watch-review It didn't appear in Google's index this morning despite me pointing a few high quality links to it (not keyword optimized links, just links from high quality forum posts) On closer examination I thought that the problem could be due to a keyword stuffing penalty so I have made sure that I am not repeating too many words/word combinations using a keyword density checker but the article is still not indexed. Any ideas what could be going on?

Hi, I have about 600 posts and most of them are not really optimized (some of them are flash photo gallery). Should I do no index them? They are just too many to optimize them. My website is http://www.soobumimphotography.com/ Thank you

Tags to index or to no index that is the Question
Sorry for the silly Shakespearean introduction but what are peoples opinions on leaving tag clouds to be indexed or no indexable by the search engines. I tend to leave them non indexable at the moment. I use wordpress for blogging as do most others.
