How can you rank for several cities ?
-
I have a website design client who wishes to rank for several cities they are willing to service locally.
I have seen a competitor do this,
content all about web design
subcategories
main-site.com/web-design/city-name-website-designer
Content about web design plus content about the city itself and hiring a website designer in that city
main-site.com/web-design/next-city-name-website-designer
Content about web design plus content about the next city itself and hiring a website designer in that city
Is this a great strategy, it seems to be working for them, or will Google eventually penalize this ?
Or would you just put all 4 city names in the title and descriptions and content on one page ?

Targeting the local search results (Places/Google+ Local) isn't always a viable strategy depending on the the competitiveness of the industry and the number of/geographic distance between the target cities. If you're in a really competitive industry and you're based in one city, and you're looking to target a city that's a 45 minute drive away, Google is likely going to serve up more geographically relevant search results, regardless of the quality of Local SEO work that you've done. In this case, you may be dealing with target keywords that don't always/often produce a local search results section.

Pretty much everything that I've seen small/local businesses do in terms of on-page strategy in order to rank for a number of different localities is very spammy. It generally involves duplicate/thin content, and it sounds like that's what you're describing. However, I've seen these spammy/duplicate content strategies work well both in the past, and today.
I'd be interested to hear some other people's opinions on this, but it seems that for smaller sites panda & penguin haven't targeted them, and if you're an offender on a small scale, you can still get away with things that Google clearly doesn't want going on.
As for 4 city names in a title tag, that's not the most efficient use of a 70 characters.

Things allways change in the SEO world.
here is a video for last Friday that discusses good internal linking (AKA site structuring to rank for more than one location) http://www.seomoz.org/blog/smarter-internal-linking-whiteboard-friday

Canonical - unexpected page ranking
We are getting good ranking for an unexpected page, rathewr than the one we were trying to get ranking for. Should we put a canonical on the 'unexpected page' to the page we would like to receive the ranking for - or do we risk losing the ranking? Any suggestions welcomed. Ian

Homepage not ranking for main keyword, all other pages ranking slightly for their own keyword phrases.
Dear Mozzers, We have an ecommerce website (www.pashmina-boutique.com), we want to rank the homepage for the keyword "pashmina". Problem is, we are nowhere to be found, not even in the top 100 search results of Google. It is indexed, we have no crawl errors, except that we had some problems with our hosting (503's), the crawler of Google bumped in a few of those. And we are fixing it. Our other pages, e.g. (http://www.pashmina-boutique.com/15-white-pashminas) ranks for "white pashminas" 24th and "white cashmere pashminas" 23rd. We have done no linkbuilding, in Majestic, you can check that. We have been offline for a long time (over 6 months) and about 3 weeks ago, we did a redesign (SEO). We relaunched, everything is looking fine except the homepage isn't ranking for the main keyword. Could you guys check it out? Is it over-optimization? It can't be Penguin, Panda would be a surprise too. Or do we still have to wait for the monthly Panda data-refresh? We are currently busy with this issue, once this is solved - that the homepage is ranking - we will start linkbuilding. Mr.1000

Rubber Ball Ranking Results
We noticed a few weeks ago that rankings for the phrase
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Jayblue
Charity Collection Buckets
Were bouncing between this page
http://www.carefundraisingsupplies.co.uk/fundraising-products/Charity-Collection-Buckets
Rank 16
to this page
http://www.carefundraisingsupplies.co.uk/fundraising-products/fundraising-supplies
Rank 85
So we de-SEO'd the second page and added more content to the first page.
This seemed to lock Google onto the first page at 16, but it then started to slowly slide downwards. We have made a few more on page text tweaks, tried to reduce keywords density all to no avail. Even though overall this site has a better DA and MOZ profile than those ranked 1 and 2 for the phrase, we just cannot seem to get it moving in the right direction. We are just about to apply some quality links to see if that helps. But we are wondering if we are missing something at a technical level, like category structure, Canonicalisation, 301 redirects or something else. Any thoughts?0 -
Keywords Ranking Varies When Search changes Location/City (Not Google Places)
We have a client that are ranking well on most Australian cities for competitive keywords except Google Sydney. If you toggled the cities on the search field when you search for a keyword, their places are almost exactly the same except for Sydney on which they can't be found at all in the Top 100 results. The keywords are not city specific, they are general commonly searched keywords about health. This is not a Google Places issue. The search result shows the right landing pages of the site for their respective keywords. Any ideas or experience on this kind of situation. Much appreciated Louie

Checking keyword rankings
I have 2 questions: 1. To check keyword rankings with firefox, i am choosing: Tools>Options>Privacy>"clear all current history" Timerange to clear: Everything Check Boxes: Browsing and download history, form and search history, cookies, cache, active logins Is there anything else I need to be doing? 2. Search results in my Niche are heavily localized. Is there any way to check rankings in another area? Ex: By default, our rankings are for Northeast NJ. Is there any way to check Baltimore, for example?

Can a Hosting provider that also hosts adult content sites negatively affect our SEO rankings on a non-adult site hosted on same platform?
We're considering moving a site to a host that also offers hosting for adult websites. Can this have a negative affect on SEO, if our hosting company is in any way associated with adult websites?

De-listed? What happened? No rankings??
Was ranking on first page for over 80 terms with over 25 in the top 3 and my main keyword was ranked #4...now my twitter account has replaced my website for #4 in the rankings for the main keyword. I now have ZERO Rankings for all keywords for my website. I have no idea what happened. ** Is there anyway for me to check with Google to see why I have been wiped off the map in the search rankings? ** Boo

What is the best strategy to get a company located in one city, but does business in other cities, ranked locally in the other cities as well?
For example: this client is a custom clothier located in Phoenix, but would like to come up in the search engines for Scottsdale, Tucson, Prescott, Chicago, etc., because he travels to those cities and does business there with his custom clothing business. His website is www.artfultailoring.com Right now, he'll come up for custom suits phoenix, custom shirts phoenix az, etc. So how would I get him to come up in the search engines in more locations than just Phoenix?
