Help me strategize!
-
Hoping for some guidance here. I am trying to place anywhere on page 1 in google organic search for my targeted term "Philadelphia wedding photographers." My blog posts rank very well for their own keywords/long-tails, but I'm having trouble ranking my homepage for my main aforementioned keyword. The frustrating part is that my SEOmoz domain/page authority should easily place me near the top of page 1, but instead I'm at the top of page 3 (down from page 2 last week).
Potential issues that I am aware of:
-
#1 backlink anchor text is non-branded (branded is 2nd highest..I am working to fix this over time)
-
Homepage itself is bare content due to nature of photography niche (though, my title tag and header focus on keyword and brand). I'm sure everyone will recommend that I increase homepage content, but virtually all competitors have a similar lack of homepage content so I don't understand how I rank so low given my page/domain authority.
-
I've received 1 unnatural link notice from Google on March 22, 2012, but this is the only time, and really had no visible impact on my traffic.
-
I have no local listing. I will remedy this in about 2 months when I have a physical location. Regardless, organic (non-local) listings are important to me because my physical location is 30 minutes outside city center.

Is there a specific way that my website and Facebook page need to be connected in order to receive social graph juice? Currently, my website has some social plugins to like/share/tweet my content...and my FB page has a link to my website in the About section. (They also both use the same brand name). Most of my social activity (likes/shares) is directly on my Facebook fan page, and not on my website.
Thank you in advance for any advice you may have! I'm hoping that someone is able to point out a strategy other than 1) more (branded) backlinks and 2) more homepage content!

Based on the above recommendation, I've added ~200 words of content to the homepage via a flyout. Two weeks have passed and I'm still ranked at the bottom of page two for my keyword "Philadelphia wedding photographers" despite having Moz domain/page rank similar to the top listing.
I can't seem to figure out what's wrong...I appreciate any further suggestions!

Yep, that is what I am going to recommend. I wish my competitors were more married to design than to making money. I would be kickin' ass and takin' names.
I'll take all of the thumbs down that people want to give me on this. You are choosing not to be competitive.
There could be creative methods such as dropdowns or an accordion page format that would get text into this page and become visible with a user action.
Maybe something like this that enables you to show multiple images and place text below them. I think that multiple images are a step up. http://themes.swiftpsd.com/?theme=ability
Here the action arrow at bottom of page could be clicked to reveal a lot of text. http://themeforest.net/item/plento-a-fullscreen-responsive-ajax-template/full_screen_preview/2313859

I just got hammered by a Google penalty - My guess is it was was keyword stuffing anchor text...help!
Hi, I just woke up to find my website had disappeared from search results in Google relevant to my business keywords. Looking back over the past few weeks I realise I went 'keyword heavy' in a few too many back links. I am careful to avoid websites with a high spam score and have varies anchor text well in the past. However, now the website has 86% less search visibility and I am being penalised for all searches apart from my brand name. I have tried to change as many back links with the keyword in question as I can but some links I can't change. My questions: Will this penalty be for good? What else can I do to rectify the situation?

Does an external link to an image file on my site help my SEO?
I found a few websites that are displaying images from my site. Curiously, they have also linked these images to the source image file on my website. I found these because Moz showed these sites in my list of backlinks. I assume that means it impacts my Domain Authority. But does this actually help me in search engines since it's not linking to a page on my site?

How do the powerful links of an old domain help my new domain?
I recently purchased a domain with over twenty years age, a few .gov links and A LOT of .edu links. Of course, the domain is relevant to my site's content. I'm hosting the domain on my shared server and have setup 301 redirects for each page that had external links pointing to it via the htaccess file within the domain's root directory. These 301 redirects, of course, point to my new domain, which is on a dedicated server. Specifically, they point to a directory on my new domain. I've also verified the purchased domain and my new domain on Google Search Console/Webmaster Tools. Finally, I've completed a google site change request for the old site to point to my new site. My questions: Should I also list my old domain on the dedicated server over the shared server or does it matter? Will the backlinks of the old site show up in my new site's links via Google's search console, Open Site Explorer, etc.? Will the backlinks of the old site improve the authority of my domain? Also, keep in mind that I have the 301 redirects pointing to a directory on my new site, not the root page of the new domain. Will the backlinks of the old site help my new domain's authority? In the eyes of Moz I've read, NO. I understand it's just a MOZ metric but from what I understand it also correlates with Google's actual 'authority' metric/method of giving value to a particular domain over another based on the backlinks. How exactly do the backlinks of the old domain benefit my new domain and is there a way to measure this/see the relationship? Thank you for any help you're willing to give!

I need help: Website has dropped and I dont know how to bring it back
Hi All, So my website has dropped now to page 12, I have no idea why, I've tried myself to bring it back and I have also tried a few £1000 at outsourcing the SEO which has had no affect. There are no penalties in webmaster tools but I personally think something the algo doesn't like is holding it back - I could be wrong. I think this because some of the results higher than me are a lot worse, hold little to no content and there backlink profiles have no links, some are even 1 page new domains that have been live for as little as a month ranking a lot higher than me. At one point I was ranking page1, position4 for the term 'bank holidays' and now I don't rank anywhere. What's weird is if you search 'bankholidays' as one word I appear in that position. Does anyone have any ideas what is going on? Problem page: followuk.co.uk/bank-holidays - GoogleUK search. I need some help please.

HELP - Should I Disavow SEO, Site Analysis, and Website Worth Links?
I have a gadget site and have MANY links to my site from sites that offer web analysis or SEO tools. For example, the site chkme.com has over 1,000 links to my home page. I don't know who they are, why they are linking to my site, and their site is irrelevant to my industry. Should I disavow links from sites like these? My site seems to be linked to from a lot of "website worth" type sites as well. I think I may have been hit with an unnatural site penalty but I do NO blackhat or any type of link building whatsoever. Thanks in advance 😉

Will placing links in articles on my site help my rankings?
I have a few page rank 2 articles on my site. Will placing links to other pages on my site with appropriate anchor text in the body of these articles help the other pages to rank higher for the anchor text i place in these links in the articles? Thanks in advance! Ron

Do sub-domains help overall domain ranking?
If I have a blog at (for example) blog.mywebsite.co.uk (hosted on Wordpress), does this confer rankings to the top level domain (e.g. www.mywebsite.co.uk which we host ourselves)? Contained within the blog are many links to the main website (which is an eCommerce website) for all our key phrases, but it seemed like a good idea to keep the blog and the store separate. Alternatively, would it be better to use something like www.mywebsite.co.uk/news? Thanks! Alex

Linkbuilding - Suspicious? Seems like they still help!
I know we should be careful of suspicious links, and that google may davalue them or even penalize, especiallysince the latest update. It seems though, however it really hasnt caught up to alot of them yet. And alot of competition is still benefitting from what seems like all garbage links in their backlink profile So could someone give their opinion about links form pages like this, assuming it is a mix of this along with other "better" types of links? http://www.bmxplusmag.com/index.php/member/4817/ See the bio at the bottom. "At least" it is within copy, and only one link to the page? (Please do not reply with a simple "be careful" message) Also, does anyone have any update, on the benefit of TextLinkAds, since the recent algo update? Thanks Sam
